Subject: Harry Brandelius (old Swedish folk/pop) From: diacad Date: 15 Jul 07 - 01:44 PM I asked this question on peoplesmusic list, and Steve Suffit suggested Mudcat as a place to try. Hope you can help. We all know about Joe Hill (originally Hillstrom in Sweden) of IWW fame. Does anyone recall the much later (but less serious) Swedish folksinger Harry Brandelius (1910-1994), or know much more about him other than the little available on the net? I have accumulated a number of old 78s, and even a couple of Swedish CDs (no English translations on them) that are great fun, even if you don't understand a word. He sang sea chanteys and topical songs (including some humorous accounts of culture clash from US-Swede immigrant experiences). Although my father's first language was Swedish (before he went to public school), I do not speak it, nor know anyone at present who does. I think Brandelius wrote most of his hundreds of songs; but the tunes were probably lifted from old folk or popular sources. Does anyone know if his lyrics (with English translation) are available anywhere? Or any account of him in English? Google is not much help. Tack så mycket, Dave Ecklein |
