My newly-installed Windows Media Player Version 9 won't play sound when playing MPEGs (taken with my Sony digital camera).
I've checked every option, etc., I can find.

Other players play them perfectly, as does the camera. Media Player plays MP3s and Internet radio without problems,
so I don't understand why the problem with MPEGs. I'm running Windows ME.

Don

I've got WinXP and Win Media Player version 11, so things are going to be a bit different on yours. On 11, this is how I'd do it.

Open Media Player.
Go to 'Tools', then 'Options'
Go to the 'File Types' tab
Make sure 'Movie file (mpeg)' is checked

Thanks Jeri, but I checked that box during the install (and it's still checked). I wouldn't bother about the program except that I need it for some Internet TV stations.

Oh well. This might not be any help either, but I'm just throwing out ideas.

I had a problem getting sound with one program. I later went to my sound card's 'volume control' (Programs/Accessories/Entertainment) and discovered something had been set to 'mute', presumably by the program that didn't work. I un-muted it, and it worked fine.

Occasionally a program will set the sound level to 0 by default when a file starts. Maybe the file itself does it...it's hard to tell.

I have to go to 'sound control' (or Windows mixer) and move some slider away from bottom position.

If you are really struggling you could always use Super to convert the MPEG into something that you can play

Nick, thanks for that tip about Super--I'll download it as it might come in handy sometime.

After checking the MS documentation on codecs, etc., I suspect that it's a codec problem, so I checked the box for automatically downloading codecs and maybe it might fix itself. Fortunately I'm not dependent on Media Player (which I always hated as it was slow and clumsy)--I can use VLC Player which seems to play all kinds of audio and video files.
