Subject: Tommy is bad off
From: kendall
Date: 24 Jul 07 - 05:30 PM

It is with a heavy heart that I tell you about Tommy Makem.
As you know, he has been battling lung cancer, and it has now spread to his liver.
I don't know if he would like to have me put his address here or not, so I'm not going to, but have a good thought for this outstanding performer.

Thread Name: Tommy [Makem] is bad off
Subject: RE: Tommy [Makem] is bad off
It's my understanding that the family has been overwhelmed with calls and mail. They have asked that Tommy's address be removed from this thread. If you would like to convey any messages to Tommy, you can post at the discussion forum at http://www.makem.com/ - you have to register to post. The thread on Tommy's illness is here (click).
    -Joe-

From the family:
If anyone wants to write him a postcard or letter, you can address it to PO Box 336, Dover NH 03821-0336. He'll get anything addressed to him there.

That's very sad. The Clancy Brother and Tommy Makem were my first introduction to Irish music in the 60s and I have most of their LPs.
One of my favorite songs that I sing now along with my fiddle is his "Rambles of Spring":

I've a fine, felt hat
And a strong pair of brogues
I have rosin in my pocket for my bow
O my fiddle strings are new
And I've learned a tune or two
So, I'm well prepared to ramble and must go.

I'll keep him in my thoughts. A great musician, songwriter, and a wonderful person. We will miss him.

S. in Seattle

I only opened this thread 'cos someone drew my attention to this sad news.

I'm sure Tommy Makem has hundreds of fans out there who will be as sad as I am to hear this, he was an early influence for many.   Could some kind elf put his surname in the thread title please?

I am all but unable to talk on the phone, so I won't call. My friend Gordon Bok went to see him, and Gordon said he smiled when Gordon relayed my best wishes to him.
He was in the hospital, but he was so distressed that they let him go home. There he got so uncomfortable that they put him back where he could be cared for properly.

This is a mega bummer for me.Too many people whom I hold dear are checking out.

I have a number of fond memories of this wonderful man. I remember a Festival we were at, and the green room, with Tommy and Liam Tiernan and I, was a blast. I walked in, and was in awe of this great performer, by the end he had put me at such ease that we were all having a wonderful time.

And we perform his Rambles of Spring as well. It is a peach of a song.

All the best, Tommy.

Mick

Kendall.
My thoughts are with you also. A few years back I said to Mum that a lot of my friends had been passing away. Her reply was "Well Adrien, a time will come when you may be the only one left". She went on to explain that all of her friends had moved on.
Damn it is sad news as it was when we lost a few months back Dermot O'Reilly of Ryan's Fancy.

The privilege is all ours and I ask that he awake another day, free of pain and distress, wherever that may be.

The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem have been a tradition at my house on St. Patrick's Day ever since I was born. It was only a few years ago that I realized that it was good music no matter what the day was. Here's to Tommy Makem!

Look at the coffin, with silver handles
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody well dead?
Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody good cry
And always remember, the longer you live
The sooner you'll bloody well die.

Slainte!

When I first heard Tommy Makem recite "The Host Of The Air" my hair rose on my neck. His is the voice that first opened Irish folk music up to me.

" I feel that old Tyrant approaching,
That cruel and remorseless old foe,
And I lift up my glass in his honour,
Good health to old Rosin the Beau"

Here's to Tommy Makem.

I listened to his music from the age of six or seven, I think.

I first heard him on the very first evening of my very first trip
to New York City--- was wandering about, came across 'Tommy Makems
Irish Pavilion' and the sign said 'Tonight - Tommy Makem and Liam
Clancy.' Went right in and made a reservation. Thank god I'd remembered
to bring my tweed jacket!

I met Tommy in person several years later, playing 'host' at Mystic.
Absolutely the most unpretentious, unassuming, 'gentleman' of a
performer that I've ever encountered (other than maybe Pete
Seeger). 'Soft spoken' doesn't begin to describe it.

A true treasure.

Like millions of others I never met Tommy Maken but he had a huge influence on me and was instumental in me developing a lifelong love of folk music, and a very soft spot for for Irish music too.

(And as an Englishman that hasn't always been an easy path to tread.)

I hope, if there's any chance, that he recovers; if not then I hope that the alternative comes easy.

God bless, Tommy.

How very sad! What a grand voice. So very perfect for folk music.

I first heard Tommy Makem in 1959 - I think it was. I'd not heard him before. And I'd not even heard OF him before. I was there at Chicago's Eighth Street Theater to hear the only other man on the show that night---Bob Gibson.

This was when Bob was a star at Chicago's GATE OF HORN folk club/bar on Dearborn Street and Chicago Ave. It was a very rare concert setting by Mr. Gibson in a venue that wasn't alcohol drenched and taking place in the wee small hours of the morning. (I was 18 years old and too young for nightlife and drinking.)

But Tommy Makem came out on stage---sat down in a chair--didn't say a word, and mesmerized the audience doing his "With a ring ting of an ing ting of an ido..." --- the wonderful 'shoemaker's song' complete with all the mechanical pantomiming that went with the various steps one would go through while making an actual pair of shoes by hand in days of old. ----- It blew me away--showed me how folk songs really are time machines that could pick us up here and now, and drop us off in other times and places. ----- I've been a huge fan of Tommy's ever since.

There is no more I can say, Kendall. Just give him my best wishes--from an American folksinger and long time fan who never met him. I do hope this last journey is a relatively easy one.

Love,

Art Thieme

Maybe it's too soon for this, but, what the hell. One of the times I met him....

I was doing an airport construction job in Deer Kake, Newfoundalnd. As top dog on the job, I was always on the job site before dawn. One morning, I strolled into an empty (I thought) building and I was singing at the top of my voice.... great acosutics in an empty Airport Terminal... when, all of a sudden, I was drowned out like a cricket by a lion. There he stood, belting it out. My jaw dropped.

He stopped and asked, "What's the matter lad? You forget the words?" Then, another voice, Liam, whom I had apparently woken up, said, "I wish you would both forget the words." Tommy gave me a wink and began again. A solo performance. I treasure it to this day and always will. A chat over coffee in my office was a wee treat as well.

A bit later, when the construction crew arrived, the lead hand said something I'll never forget.... "Dat lad's got a t'roat on 'im like a gannet!" He meant that in an endearing way.

More years ago than I care to remember, my then boyfriend (now my husband of 30 years) found a compilation of LPs called An Anthology of Folk Music - 5 records on Sine Qua Non. The record had wonderful singers on it like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Leadbelly, Odetta and some folks I had never heard of -- The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. It was all over for me at that point. I have seen him sing three times -- I went back stage once like a teenager and got his autograph, and Liam's -- they were both so very gracious. I had never heard music like that .... . it opened up a whole new world for me. I am very sad tonight.

I grew up with Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem, and found out later that all the songs I truly loved, which I had though were *old* classics, had been written by Tommy Makem.
Later, when I first met my X2B, it was Tommy Makem's music, heavily laden with at least Liam if not several Clancy brothers, uncles and nephews (wonder why none of the sisters or the cousins or the aunts?), that brought us closest, and when many years later we wed, we honeymooned in Ireland. We didn't stay anywhere we hadn't heard them mention in a song, and even one night out of Bandon we strayed and out for Klonakilty we made our way, passing through Ballinascathy and saw the pub at which they whet their whistle in the song... and it's called the Whistle Stop. We hadn't known it was a reference, we thought it was just a metaphor... anyway.
Please tell Tommy this story. You can tell him our twins were made in Ireland, which is perfectly true!
(Don't tell him, unless you think he'd find it funny, that when we went through the CBRos home town and told people we were on a kind of Clancy Brothers tour, we got really nasty looks and comments about what terrible boys they were to be sure, never brought any of all that lovely money back home. Oops.)

First time I heard Tommy's singing was his debut LP in the what, early 60s? I had known Sarah's voice from Diane Hamilton (Guggenheim)'s collecting, so when I saw the record, its grand list of songs and his face full of puckish humor on the cover, I bought it. (Hadn't heard any Clancys at that point but soon remedied that.)

His "Little Beggarman" and "The Irish Rover" have never left my head in all the years since.

What's shocking about this sad news is how recently I saw him ... a bare couple of years ago at his outdoor appearance in Lowell, MA. He was in roaring fine shape then, his best performance of the night an audio check of the magnificent "[Sailing in the] Lowlands Low," but every song was a joy, including his wonderful performance of "Ten Wee Wimmen" that mesmerized Amba and me till we learned it and it's still our favorite car singing song.

A singing wizard who seems to summarize in his lanky self all that is fine about Irish traditional song and style, made universal by his deservedly popular performing, he's one of the very few of whom I can truly say, "He could sing the phone book, and I'd listen."

Words fail ... no way I can say what his keen and joyous music has meant to me, or how like a ton of bricks on the head it is to hear of his trouble and pain. May he be eased, and I hope for his recovery and many years yet.

Kendall, please add mine to the bundle of fans' well-wishes in your remembrance if you see him again.

Bob

We'd like to thank everyone for their concerns and we have passed along your thoughts and prayers to our father. His cancer has not spread to his liver and right now he is resting comfortably. We certainly appreciate everyone's concerns, but as far as any phone calls, the staff at the health care facility has to field them and that takes away from their time to care for other patients. Our father would hate to think that he was in any way responsible for someone else receiving less attention because of him.

If anyone wants to write him a postcard or letter, you can address it to PO Box 336, Dover NH 03821-0336. He'll get anything addressed to him there. And again, thank you for thinking of him.

Every morning I wake up with a song in my mind. It could be anything, and this morning, I woke with a memory of being on stage at the Holiday Inn by the bay in Portland Maine. I was performing with Tommy Makem and Schooner Fare, old and dear friends. We were singing Rolling Home, practically my theme song, and when we came to ...old new England, Tommy turned to me and bellowed out "Old New hampshire"! what do you mean, old New England? The crowd loved it.

Every time that part came around he would give me that look, and sing NEW HAMPSHIRE! This is one of my very few heros.

I've met his sons, but I don't really know them.

Kendall. That's a hoot! Minds me of the intro to the song "God Bless England" on, my memory can't be trusted, but, the album "Hearty and Hellish", which sites an instance of a lad throwing a drink... well, at least an empty glass. ;-) (And, no, don't anyone bother to get pissy about me slurring the Irish... it's a joke.)

Similarly, I saw Tommy and Liam one night in North Sydney (pretty sure, again memory fails), Nova Scotia, when a fellow called out from the back of the audience for that song. Liam saved the fellow's life when he bellowed out for the three or four lads bearing down on this poor fellow to stop and listen. The song was palyed. Later, I heard that the fellow drank for the rest of the night for free, courtesy of the lads that nearly beat him up!

Rest in peace Tommy. Here's to one of the best men there was! We'll miss you and treasure your music forever. I regret never seeing you but you touched my life.

Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be with you all

Well, St. Peter has been trying to book him for the Heavenly
Irish Festival (you know, the one with no ceilidh bands composed
of 18 accordions, 25 fiddles, and 90 tin-whistles all playing in
dis-unison, and no stands selling bright green plastic derby hats,
and where the soda bread has no raisins in) for quite some time
now, but he'd never agreed to come.

This year, he'll be headlining, along with a bunch of his old
band-mates. Tom Clancy was probably getting tired of reciting
from Finnegan's Wake without Tommy cackling in the background.

Let's just hope the Celestial Choir doesn't take him too literally
when he says "Let's all join hands and contact the living."

I am moved to tears. Tommy was really an inspiration to everyone who knew him. My memories of him will always be fond ones. We worked together at the Gate Of Horn and I was fortunate to accompany him with Paddy, Tommy and Liam on the recording with Bruce Langhorne and Bill Lee, "Hearty and Hellish".

Tommy was a sage and a bard. I remember having the Clancy's and Tommy to dinner one night in Chicago in 1958 or 9. I remember vividly a party I had in my home in Hyde Park.
The outrageous Severn Darden was there and was upstaged by the "lads" or "boys" as we used to call them sans shirts and singing merrilly. A naked couple with towels wrapped about them came out of the shower to listen.

Tommy had a philosophical way about him. The core of his sincerity ran deep. We have the legacy of a great song "Four Green Fields".

He was the only one I've ever heard to deliver the song "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya'" where the nerve-endings on the spine tingled with awe. He sang that song with the knowledge of a man who knew the cost of the ravages of war. The biting almost Brechtian delivery is
indelibly imprinted on my mind. It was the best.

Tommy Sands now carries the torch for the expression of compassion for all the Irish people.

Tommy was a "Pioneer". He eschewed alcohol to his great credit.

He and the Clancys were my first intro to Irish music.

The Bard of Armagh is gone. We all grieve.

Frank Hamilton

I heard the death announced on Raidió na Gaeltachta, and then I watched RTÉ lunchtime news which had a fairly long tribute to Tommy Makem, including snippets of him singing Four Green Fields. I first heard Tommy singing on his own (without Clancy's)when I was 10 years old and that sparked my interest in Irish music in particular; I already had a love for folk music in general. So he had a huge influence in my life.

I also heard that Tommy Makem had been involved in the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association and/or in setting up an American support group for NICRA (circa 1970?). Can anyone elaborate on Tommy's role?

Hearing Tommy's singing of 'The Butcher Boy' for the first time was probably the moment that set me towards a life love of folk music.   As a young teenager I wrote and requested he sing the song when I saw The Clancys and Tommy Makem in Liverpool, probably around 1968. He sang it and it's been a cherished memory to this very sad day.

Out of interest I googled the song and unbelievably it came up on Youtube - still hits the same spot, absolutely beautiful.

tributes to Tommy Makem were carried on RTE, UlsterTV, and BBC-Ireland news this evening. Much of RTE and UTV footage was the same, including memories from nephew Peter Makem and from singing partner Liam Clancy, and also Paddy Maloney of the Chieftains. BBC1 included Tommy Makem speaking about when he sang in the Bogside in support of civil rights, he said it was like a request to sing behind the Berlin wall, and a snippet of 4 Green Fields (I was surprised to see that in this N Ireland-based obituary), and also showed a bit of Tommy's mother Sarah singing, which was very nice to see.

I'm another whose first introduction to Irish music was from Tommy Makem and the Clancy brothers, in the 1960s. Many years later (1995-ish?) I met Tommy face to face in Easton, MA at a very low-key Irish event (not the Irish fest) and told him I'd been influenced by him and was now singing folk music myself. He thrilled me to pieces by asking my name and said, "Maybe I've heard of you." ...he hadn't, but it thrilled me just the same. Even more was the deep satisfaction of meeting one of my true heros, and finding him a downright decent, kind human being.

Go well, Tommy.

Ya know.... watching that youtube clip JennyO... makes me realize something. Those people who never saw him perform really have no idea of the absolute power of his voice.

How can I explain this? In words? I sat fourty feet away from him one night when he sang that song. My chest reverberated. The table and glassware reverberated. It was truly awsome.

I have played "Long Night" by Rawlins Cross on the old tape player a few times today. Haven't had the heart to play any of Tommy's yet. That song is a tribute to Emile Benoit, Newfoundlander, written by RC the night Emile passed. It holds so true for Tommy as well. This shall be a long night.

Very sad news indeed.

I sat with him one night in a bar in Toronto although he neither smoked nor drank. He was with an english guitar player " Ray Durham". They were on tour and came into the bar where we were playing. I remember discussing " The Cobbler" with him. I had a different chorus that I learned from my grandfather who was a cobbler. Tommy was quite interested in the different words, although I don't believe he ever used them ?. A real gentleman, he will be sadly missed.

I hear he went home to Keady, Co. Armagh about 3 weeks ago, just to look at the place one last time.

I think I will do the Cobbler this Sunday in his memory.

Rest in Peace Tommy

Tommy Makem will be missed but still loved for all his contributions. I grew up listening to Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers and still listen today. I am saddened by his passing and as an Irish American will remember him well as a great influence to generations in his homeland as well as here in America.

I am just dumbstruck at the realization, once again, how it takes times like these to realize just exactly how much we will miss someone. This wonderful, gentle bard will live forever. In his passing, the family should know just exactly how much he meant to all of the children and grandchildren of Ireland. They will see how very much he meant to the performers in many genre's, and the world over. Some folks seek glory, and live so that when they die they will have a big funeral. They seek validation in their good works. And they always come up short. But folks like Tommy seek only to entertain, seek only to carry on a tradition. And he did it in such a wonderfully caring way, that he will live forever in the hearts of those he touched. He will live forever in the music he spread.

Boys (the Makem Brothers), I haven't seen you in a few years since I left West Michigan. But I send my condolences, and want you to know that I understand your loss and your grief. I hope you understand that you are this great man's, and his Mother's, legacy. And from what I have seen of you, ever since the first time I arranged for you to come to the Fenians in Conklin, MI, this immense legacy is in good hands.

God be good to him,

All the best,

Mick Lane

I am honored to have had the pleasure of caring for Mr. Makem in our facility during his final days. Aside from being overwhelmingly talented, Mr. Makem was a very sweet and very stoic man whom many of us fell in love with immediately. The love and support his three sons and daughter gave him until the end was amazing. What a beautiful family he has left behind to carry on his legacy. Rest well, my sweet angel. Maureen

"the absolute power of his voice" -

I never had the opportunity to hear him live, and wasn't aware of that quality of his voice - but that's consistent with an anecdote I heard about two weeks ago on CBC radio. A Newfoundlander was being interviewed about his life - I don't remember anything else about the interview, except: He was once in charge of building an addition to the airport in Gander (a hub for transatlantic flights), and came in early one morning, as was his wont, and began to sing as he reconnoitered the construction site before his workers showed up. He assumed he was alone - until a huge voice joined in, filling the place, and he stopped in awe and turned around - to see Tommy Makem standing there. "What's the matter - did you forget the words?" says Tommy. And then Liam Clancy hauled himself up off whatever makeshift surface he had been sleeping on. "I wish you'd both forgot the bloody words!" says he.

Anyway, the three of them had an impromptu sing-song there and then, to the surprise and delight of the other workers as they arrived ...

I think it is a fine thing to be able to leave such stories behind ...

Irreplaceable voice, irreplaceable man.

And yes, somehow I find his "Butcher Boy" coming to mind too, and how hair-raising it was to hear him sing it. Ever after I would keep two versions of the song in my head" Buell Kazee's Kentucky one, and Tommy's.

Not only power in that voice, but something wonderfully dynamic, full of energy, humor, wit ...

Fare thee well, Tommy, and thanks for all the fine music you've left us.

Gnu,

Gladly.

Most of Tommy's version is the same as my grandfather's song except for the chorus. Also Tommy sang "My name is Dick Darby", my grandfather used his own name " John Simpson". I don't know what the original name should be. Probably Dick Darby.

Grandfather's chorus had these words.

" With an inting of an inting and an Idoh
With an inting of a inting of an iday
Ould wax-end and heel-ball you're boozing again
and your lapstone keeps beating away.

ps: "Waxend was a small piece of amber coloured wax, about the size of a cube of billiard chalk. It was used to coat the twine befiore the stitching. The cobbler waould draw the twine through his fist which held the waz-end."
Heelball was a larger piece of hard wax, it came in black and brown. It had to be heated and then applied to the rims of the heels in a burnishing motion, forcing the wax in between the layers of leather thus caulking the soles and the heels. It dried to a hard shellac finish, very durable.
My grandfather also glued a small piece of wood (matchstick) in the centre of the sole, this attracted water, thereby making the soles not waterproof but water resistant, The piece of wood collected a lot of moisture.
A lapstone was used in the older days as a sort of anvil to soften the leather to be used for the toes, so that it was pliable. Later on they were able to purchase pre-softened leather for this purpose. My job was to go downtown Belfast to Lower Donegal street and buy a rolled up side of leater from Donaghy's shop. I carried it home on my shoukder. I loved helping my Grandfather and also the smell of new leather, plus Mrs. Donaghy used to give me a bar of chocolate as a tip.
In future when I sing this song I will think of Tommy.

Another voice here, to send our love to all the Makem Family, kinfolks and friends. So many memories we have of him,- George and I when we first went to Ireland and visited his family in Keady- and heard Sarah Makem singing, "As I Roved Out On a May Mornin, On a May mornin right early- I met my love upon the way, she sang so sweet and clearly..." for the first time, as she made the tea for her family and for us. An evening of marvelous music followed, neighbors from all over Keady dropping in, with instruments, songs, ready for what they knew would be a fine party. Tommy always remembered that evening when he played the whistle and sang the only song he knew at that time when he was seventeen,- "Nell Flaharty's Drake." and laughed about it when he gave an interview for me, years later.

I wish that we could have seen him more often, but we do treasure those memories we have, and wish for you all, strength, courage and the joy of your own treasured memories to carry you through this time of parting. My feeling is that Death is a part of Life, and that the parting will not be forever.

Joy and blessings,    Jean Ritchie

Not to be pissy, but, GUEST,meself, @ 7:29PM, 02 Aug. Perhaps you misunderstood. The fellow that happened to is a New Brunswicker who has never been on CBC Radio.

Here is another story from that day which shows the nature of the man, as mentioned many times already in this thread. I asked Tommy why he and Liam spent the night in the airport. I was staying at the Deer Lake Motel not far away and it wasn't full up. He replied that they had arrived very late after playing in Corner Brook and decided to go straight to the airport because of all the gear (there was a lot of gear). Since somebody had to keep an eye on the instruments and equipment, he let "the lads" off at the motel and he and Liam went on to the airport. A gentleman indeed.

Hehehe... minds me of what happened a bit later (this was at about 9AM and their flight was at about 2PM.) Word quickly got around, as it would, that Tommy and Liam were at the airport and there was quite a crowd in no time. The commissionaire (airport security) suggested the gear would be safer on the ramp and that was done. After the gear was brought airside, Tommy asked one of "the lads", I assume the road manager, "What are those?", while pointing at a number of aircraft in front of a nearby hangar. "Planes." The next question was, "I wonder if any are for hire?" It was done... fairly quickly.

Keith, thanks for the link. Here's the whole thing:

From The Times
August 3, 2007
Tommy Makem
The godfather of modern Irish music who left a huge mark on the 1960s US folk music scene

Tommy Makem was voted, along with Joan Baez, as one of the two "most promising" acts at the Newport Folk Festival in 1961. Within little more than a year he had been usurped and it was Bob Dylan who was playing king to Baez's queen in the burgeoning Sixties American folk movement. But the assessment of the festival judging panel was perceptive, for Makem was a seminal figure who became known as the godfather of modern Irish music and was still a popular and much loved performer 40 years on.

He was born into a family of singers in Co Armagh, Northern Ireland, and his mother Sarah Makem was reputed to have a repertoire of more than 500 songs. She never performed outside her own rural locality, but her evocative voice and extensive song catalogue attracted the attention of the BBC, which recorded her singing the title song of its influential 1950s folk series, As I Roved Out.

Such a background meant, as Tommy Makem later put it, that he learnt to sing before he could talk. When the American collector Diane Hamilton recorded his mother in the early 1950s, she also recorded his rich baritone and he made his first appearance on disc on the 1955 compilation, The Lark in the Morning. During her visit, Hamilton also introduced Makem to Liam Clancy, a young singer from Co Tipperary. It was the start of a fruitful musical partnership that would endure for another four decades.

Seeing more future for Irish traditional music in America than at home, both Makem and Clancy emigrated in 1956. By this time, Clancy's elder brothers Tom and Paddy were already living in New York, where Paddy was running the Tradition record label. Makem and the three brothers began to perform as a quartet, first at parties and then, as their fame spread by word of mouth, in New York's Irish clubs and bars.

The Rising of the Moon , the first Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem album, was released in 1959. The set comprised mostly Irish rebel songs and was followed swiftly by Come Fill Your Glass With Us — Irish Songs of Drinking and Blackguarding.

Dressed in the trademark Aran sweaters that would become the stereotypical sartorial standard for other Irish performers from Val Doonican to the Dubliners, they had a vigorous and earthy approach that made them favourites on the emerging American folk scene. The centre of musical activity at the time was Greenwich Village, New York, and the quartet sang and hung out regularly in its bars and coffee houses, where they met and befriended young American singers such as Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan.

National prominence followed when they appeared on Ed Sullivan's television show in late 1961 and they graduated from pass-the-hat appearances at folk cellars to the concert stage at Carnegie Hall. In 1963 they performed at the White House for President Kennedy, who was ever eager to cultivate the Irish constituency.

They were also serious musical innovators and without their early influence it is doubtful whether the Celtic cultural tiger would have gone on to roar in the way that it later did. Until the arrival of Makem and the Clancys, Irish traditional song had been sung mostly unaccompanied in a dated style that was dying on its feet. Influenced by such American folk acts as the Weavers and the Kingston Trio, the quartet reinvigorated the tradition by backing their hearty harmonies with guitar, whistle, harmonica, drums and banjo.

Makem was an accomplished whistle player and is also credited as the first to introduce the five-string Appalachian banjo into Irish music when he used the instrument on his 1961 solo debut album, The Songs of Tommy Makem. The set included such, then little-known, traditional songs as The Foggy Dew and The Irish Rover, which would soon become standards and the subject of hundreds of cover versions. It also led to his award-winning performance that year at the Newport Folk Festival.

With America conquered, in 1963 the quartet returned to Ireland for their first concert on home soil. Their international acclaim was crucial in restoring Ireland's pride in its own musical traditions and led the way for the success of such groups as the Dubliners.

But their influence was considerable, not only in reviving and transforming Irish music, but also on American folk performers. Dylan adapted their version of Dominic Behan's The Patriot Game to become With God on Our Side, one of his most potent early protest songs. Decades later, Dylan acknowledged the debt when he invited Makem to appear at his star-studded 30th anniversary gala concert at Madison Square Garden, New York, in 1992.

In 1961 they moved from the tiny specialist Tradition label to Columbia and averaged at least an album a year throughout the rest of the decade. Makem, who had also developed as a songwriter with compositions such as The Winds are Singing Freedom, Gentle Annie and the much covered Four Green Fields, eventually left for a solo career in 1969.

He thrived touring as a solo act and hosted a number of television shows. But in 1975 he found himself sharing a bill with Liam Clancy again at a festival in Cleveland, Ohio. They did a short set together and the euphoric reception persuaded them to resume their partnership. They continued to work as a duo until 1978, making six albums, including Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem in 1976. This included their famous cover version of Eric Bogle's And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda.

After they went their separate ways once more in 1988, Makem continued to perform on the international Irish circuit. He also ran a club, called Tommy Makem's Irish Pavilion, on the corner of 57th Street and Lexington Avenue in New York. The club was used as the venue for the after-show party after Dylan's 30th anniversary concert, and Makem loved to tell the story of how he turned up after the concert and was initially refused entrance to his own pub by Dylan's security as he had mislaid his ticket.

In 1997 he published the book Tommy Makem's Secret Ireland, which indulged his interest in Celtic mythology. Two years later, he began a similarly themed one-man theatrical show, Invasions and Legacies, which explored themes from Irish history and legend. He continued to record, and his 1998 album, The Song Tradition, was regarded as his best work in many years. In 2000 he started the Tommy Makem International Festival of Song in South Armagh. His sons, Shane, Conor and Rory, continue the family tradition and are a popular fixture on the Irish-American folk scene, where they tour as the Makem Brothers.

Dylan acknowledged the influence of Makem and the Clancy Brothers in his 2004 autobiography Chronicles Volume One. Recalling time spent with them in the early 1960s in the White Horse Tavern in Greenwich Village, he described them as "musketeers" and wrote how he had been moved by their "rebellion songs".

Leading the tributes Clancy said that Makem, who had lung cancer, was a fighter until the end, adding: "He just would not give up."

He is survived by his three sons.

Tommy Makem, Irish folk singer, was born on November 4, 1932. He died on August 1, 2007, aged 74

Makem tributes pour in; services to be held next week

By THOMAS R. KRESSLER

Article: Tommy Makem, 'Godfather of Irish music'

DOVER — As news of iconic Irish folk musician Tommy Makem's death spread throughout the world Thursday, tributes, messages of condolences, and fond remembrances poured out.

During more than 50 years of music-making, Makem, who lived in Dover for most of those years, built up a fan base of millions and touched the hearts of just about anyone who saw him perform or had the privilege of meeting the man they called the "Godfather" of Irish Music and the "Bard of Armagh".

Though his spirit lives on everywhere, in Dover there are plans to keep Makem's memory alive in a tangible way.

Even before Makem's death, a small group had begun meeting to discuss the possibility of placing a memorial to him within the city. Former Mayors Wil Boc and Jack Buckley, musician and friend of Makem's Eugene Byrne, Makem's son Shane, and Tommy Hardiman had hoped to get the statue up before Makem's passing.

Makem died Wednesday night following a yearlong struggle with lung cancer.

"His impact on Dover has been monumental," said Boc Thursday. "He is an international star and a local here. I think Tommy was able to do both things. He was able to play on the international stage but he was a hometown Dover boy at heart who gave his heart and soul to the community."

Before spending the later parts of his life as a successful solo artist, Makem, a banjo player and baritone vocalist, played with the traditional Irish folk group The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. Many credit the group with popularizing Irish much in the United States, and they gained worldwide acclaim, largely during the 1960s folk revival.

Though he was diagnosed with cancer in the spring of 2006, Makem continued to play shows and on July 4 received an honorary doctoral degree — his third — from the University of Ulster. His last performance took place in May of this year in Chicago.

Boc and cohorts plan to incorporate as a nonprofit called "The Bard Foundation" and expand their scope to include raising money for a memorial scholarship fund. So far they are not taking any donations for the statue project, but estimate the cost will be between $60,000 and $70,000. Locations are still being staked out, but some potential spots include Immigrants Park on Main Street, Henry Law Park, or somewhere along the waterfront.

There are also plans to erect a similar statue in Makem's hometown of Keady, located in the County Armagh, in Ireland. Makem emigrated to the United States in 1955.

"It would be a memorial to Tommy, one of our first citizens here in Dover, but it would also commemorate the rest of the immigrants that came to this country," said Byrne, a fellow Irishman.

Right now, supporters may make a donation in lieu of flowers to the recently established Tommy and Mary Makem Fund, c/o Shaheen and Gordon Law Firm, 140 Washington St., Dover, N.H. 03820, or to the charity of one's choice. Makem's wife, Mary, who was a community fixture for many years, died in 2001.

Despite Makem's worldwide acclaim, many in Dover and surrounding communities were unaware that such an esteemed figure was one of the Garrison City's own. Makem's humility and distaste for celebrity may have contributed to that, some say.

But his importance in musical history is undeniable.

"It's like people who live at the foot of Mount Washington, you take it for granted after awhile," Boc said. "As far as Irish music goes, he's the Mount Washington."

Makem's funeral mass is planned for 11 a.m. next Thursday at St. Mary Church, where he was a communicant. A three-day wake will be held at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., during the following times: Monday, Aug. 6 from 7-9 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.; and Wednesday, Aug. 8 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Because parking is limited, those from out of town who are planning to attend the funeral are being asked to park at Dover Middle School, 16 Daley Drive. Buses, donated by C&J Trailways, will take those people to the church, the grave site and back to the school.

For those who are unaware (Rapaire), Dover, NH not only has multiple traffic lights, the convergence of a number of highways, multiple exits off the Spaulding Turnpike and, last but definitely not least, the most convoluted and tortured downtown traffic pattern of any larger town in New England.

Oh, yeah, then there's trains and bridges.

And that's in the best of circumstances.

Just returned home from the wake; closed casket, Irish and American flags on the wall above, the banjo to the side, a side table with photos and three plain looking penny whistles. There was softer Irish music in the background and a powerpoint slide show running.

Said hello to Katy and Rory and spoke briefly with Conor and Shane. Conor allowed as to how the impact of the loss hasn't really set in - they've been too busy. They also had to cancel some gigs, but Conor added, "People will understand."

Not only did Tommy Makem leave us a wealth of song and an incomparable style of singing,
but also three fine sons and a daughter who are carrying on the tradition he treasured.

I'll post links to articles and photos of the funeral tomorrow - Tom Hall

Subject: Foster's Daily Democrat article re' Makem funeral
From: katlaughing
Date: 09 Aug 07 - 10:47 PM

It's okay and, even preferable for archiving, to post full articles when they are about music, esp. someone like Tommy. Here's the one PattyClink posted about

DOVER — Tommy Hardiman greeted his cousin Tommy Makem at Boston's Logan Airport in 1955.

It was the first day of an American journey that would lead Makem to worldwide fame.

Hardiman also was in the room last Wednesday when the vaunted Irish-American singer passed away at the age of 74. Makem, a longtime Dover resident regarded as the "Godfather" of Irish music, died Aug. 1 after a yearlong battle with lung cancer.

"I can only thank God for allowing me to be that close to this noble man," said Hardiman, speaking at Makem's funeral Thursday at St. Mary Church. "Thank you for allowing us to sit back and dream of our ancestors and our ancestral home."

At least 1,500 people — including friends and family, local and state dignitaries and admirers of Makem's work — came to pay their respects at his service Thursday. They filled pews inside St. Mary Church, where Makem was a communicant, and overflowed into an adjoining room where the ceremony was being telecast.

As Hardiman finished up his remembrances, the faint sound of a handheld accordion intervened, played by Makem's longtime friend and collaborator Liam Clancy. Holding the squeezebox in his lap, Clancy sang the traditional song "The Bard of Armagh," a tribute to Makem, who was known by the same name.

"The songs you sang, the words you spoke, will always be remembered," said Makem's granddaughter Molly Dickerman. "You were a fighter, a lover, and most of all, an amazing person."

Crowds gathered along the sidewalks prior to the funeral as the City of Dover Fire and Rescue Department's Engine 3 led a processional down Central Avenue and Chestnut Street, its lights flashing and sirens silent, carrying with it Makem's casket.

The casket was draped with both Irish and American flags and brought into the church while the fire department's color guard and the police department's mounted patrol stood at attention. Flags adorned with Celtic crosses fluttered above the doorways.

"You can feel the weight of his presence in our midst today," said Rev. Bartley MacPhaidin, a former president of Stonehill College, where two of Makem's sons went to school.

Because he was studying abroad in the 1960s, when The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem sailed to stardom, Father MacPhaidin was unaware of their success when he first returned to Ireland in 1965. When he got home, he said, they were all the rage.

"And what a blessed rage it was to our ears," MacPhaidin said. "Their rage was a rage for joy and a rage for happiness ... it was a rage that uplifted people and bound people together and raised souls that hadn't experienced an uplift in years ... They did that for thousands and thousands of people."

Though famous for his singing, banjo playing, and storytelling, Makem's funeral was more about the man he was offstage. Friends and relatives called him a kind man who gave generously, lived modestly and loved his children and grandchildren dearly.

Gov. John Lynch and former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen were both in attendance along with a number of city officials, including Mayor Scott Myers.

Afterwards, the processional left St. Mary Church for St. Mary Cemetery on Dover Point Road, where Makem was laid to rest alongside his wife, Mary, who died six years ago. About half the funeral attendees congregated around the grave site, forming a large circle around Rev. Fritz Cerullo.

Eugene Byrne, a local resident and fellow Irish musician, lamented the loss of Makem, who he called his mentor, teacher, hero, and friend.

"He was the music, he was the story. He was the words, he was the song," Byrne said. "The singer has passed, but the songs will live on forever."

A visitor to Dover on Thursday morning would have known something big was happening, that a dignitary was visiting or that a show business celebrity was in town. In fact, both of these statements would be accurate in explaining the large crowds near downtown Dover this morning. The internationally renowned musician who had adopted Dover, N.H. as his home, Tommy Makem, was being buried.

Of the various celebrities that have called the New Hampshire seacoast area home, there is none more luminescent than Tommy Makem. His influence on American folk music and on traditional Irish music is practically indescribable. He is the author of numerous immortal songs and was a performer nonpareil. Any Tommy Makem fan will tell you without guile or hyperbole that right into the last years of his life, he was still refining and improving his craft.

Rather than deteriorating from vigorous use, his voice was still growing in expressiveness and wisdom as he entered his seventies. He was felled by lung cancer, but his artistry remained in full bloom. Indeed in his eulogy, it would be told that when asked if he intended to retire soon, Tommy responded, "I retire every night." The anticipated overflow of attendees were shuttled to and from St. Mary's Catholic Church on Third Street via two C&J Trailways buses that left from the Dover Middle School. Downtown traffic was snarled coming into town by attendees who took their chances on nearby parking. Attendance was such that the overflow was seated in the nearby rectory with a video feed of the proceedings in the church.

It was a crystal clear, sunny, arid day in Dover, a typical example of the sunny summer days that charmed Tommy Makem into to selecting Dover as his home. St Mary's church swelled to capacity and reverberated with the cacophony of an anxious crowd. All fell silent as the pipes played and Tommy Makem's casket was carried in off of a Dover Fire Department truck and into the church. Tommy enjoyed a close relationship with Dover's fire and police departments, and they afforded their friend this last honor.

First to speak was Sister Anastasia, who read the familiar passage from Ecclesiastes about a time for every season. She was followed by Molly Dickerson, Tommy's granddaughter, who read a beautiful piece entitled, "The Amazing Man My Granda Was." Father Cerullo read a homily recalling sweet stories of Tommy and his family. Tommy was a communicant at St Mary's and a valued parishioner. He referred to Tommy as a "master of kindness." He recalled the biblical use of the phrase, "salt of the earth," noting that in those times, salt was a highly valued commodity, suggesting that in this sense, Tommy was "the salt of the earth and the light of the world." He said that Tommy's mission in life was to do the right thing, a strategy that he contended would "confound some and astonish the rest." He said that Tommy told him that his mother "sang incessantly," and that he must have picked it up from her. It was clear that here was a dear man who had lost a dear friend, and who was keeping his sorrow at bay for the sake of the hundreds of people who were at his church to process their own grief that day. Surely, his tears would come with a smaller, more intimate audience.

There was a presentation of gifts that included an American flag, an Irish flag, Tommy's banjo, bread, wine, Irish sweaters, doctoral degrees, a whistle and a fire helmet. Family and friends spoke at the end, including Father MacPhadin, Eugene Byrne, Peter Makem, and Tommy Hardiman. Father MacPhaidan related Tommy's generosity on and off stage, saying that he was a slave to encores, and that if the audience was with him, he would have a hard time leaving the stage. He recalled Tommy walking out onstage to a third or fourth encore and saying, "Have you no homes to go to?" To close, Tommy's longtime musical partner Liam Clancy played concertina and sang The Bard of Armagh. As the crowd spilled out into the sunny Dover street, the reality of this day's meaning seemed to settle in. There were more tears outside than there were during the ceremony. Beet-faced, white-haired men with the map of Ireland etched into their faces wept and held one another, tears streaked across women's cheeks, some under veils, some fairly crippled with their grieving. The long, solemn procession followed the fire truck to St. Mary's cemetery where the Bard of Armagh himself was laid to rest.

Thanks, kat. You are right, these ephemeral newspaper links ought to be replaced with text when it is something really 'archive-worthy'.

I read Liam's board last night, and there is so much sadness over his passing, 'an era ending' etc.    That's not the way to honor him. We need to be sure to get out and support our local bard, or BE our local bard. Go see Mairtin de Cogain, for example, who is a young fellow very much in the Makem tradition. Anybody care to name others--besides the great man's kids?

I never had the pleasure of his company nor the golden opportunity to see him perform live, with or without the Clancys. But his voice and wit and charm will ring in my ear as they always have, and I will always cherish the gifts he so warmly and openly shared with us all. He made everyone feel a little bit Irish. My very best to his family and friends. St. Peter must be clapping hands and singing along as I write this.

Tommy was sent home this evening in fine fashion. Lots of songs sung by family & friends that he & the Clancy's made popular over the years, mostly led by his sons & their partners the Spain brothers & cousins but also by the many other relations & friends at hand. Mickey Spain did a great rendition of Ewan MacColl's "My Old Man", you could hear a pin drop as the eyes all around were being wiped of tears. No father could be more proud of his sons.

I was listening last night and luckily heard Bobby Hanvey's "Travelling Man" programme at 11 pm. He rebroadcast a Dec 2006 interview with the late Tommy Makem. Much of the discussion was about the significance of crows!

Also mention of a Tommy Makem album of workers'/trade union songs whet my curiousity. I don't think I've heard any tracks from that recording.

See http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=17877#174240 for info on Downtown Radio

I expect the programme will be archived on line for the rest of this week?

Subject: ADD: The Winds Are Singing Freedom (Makem)
From: Joe Offer
Date: 22 Mar 20 - 08:08 PM

Somebody sang this Makem song this afternoon.

THE WINDS ARE SINGING FREEDOM
(Tommy Makem)

And the winds are singing freedom
They sing it everywhere
They sing it on the mountainside
And in the city square
They sing of a new day dawning
When our people will be free
Come and join their song of freedom
Let it ring from sea to sea

In the battered streets of Belfast
Can't you hear the people cry?
For justice long denied them
And their crying fills the sky
But the winds of change are singing
Bringing hope from dark despair
There's a day of justice coming
You can feel it in the air

Chorus

Too long our people suffered
In their misery and their tears
And foreign rulers used our land
For about eight hundred years
It's a long road has no turning
And I know that soon we'll see
That day of justice dawning
When our people will be free

Chorus

There's a time laid out for laughing
There's a time laid out to weep
There's a time laid out for sowing
And a time laid out to reap
There's a time to love your brother
There's a time for hate to cease
You must sow the seeds of justice
To reap the fruits of peace

Chorus

Source: https://www.antiwarsongs.org/canzone.php?id=2188&lang=en

I haven't made corrections to the song yet.
