Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton From: Rasener Date: 27 Jul 07 - 10:35 AM >>He is one of the most under-rated writer/performers << George is one of my favourites and "Empty Handed" is my favourite song. Go see him, you will not be disappointed. |

Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton From: Dave the Gnome Date: 28 Jul 07 - 06:08 AM With a main and support there is very little time for singists I'm afraid, Rinso. Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton From: John J Date: 28 Jul 07 - 06:31 AM Better not let George read this thread - he'll think we like him! JJ |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Jul 07 - 06:32 AM I thought Swinton was an insurance company. George playing an insurance company....? make sure its a 'with profits' evening. |

Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton From: Tim theTwangler Date: 29 Jul 07 - 03:28 PM Speaking from Experience V? LOL They are a lovely couple. |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton From: Moses Date: 30 Jul 07 - 06:29 AM Ask George to sing the one about old men dancing. It is one of my top favourites and isn't on a cd yet so chances are you may not have heard it. George is a great singer-songwriter (and guitarist) and is a lovely fella too. Of course I'm privilaged to get to see George almost every week and hear the new songs hot off the press - 'Here's something I wrote this afternoon' - at Herga. If you've never seen George before, don't miss this chance. |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton From: Bernard Date: 30 Jul 07 - 06:43 AM WLD - yes, Swinton is an insurance company, which was founded 50 years ago... I bet you can't guess where...!? |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton From: Big Al Whittle Date: 30 Jul 07 - 08:16 AM No! tell us where! |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton From: Rasener Date: 30 Jul 07 - 08:41 AM Birmingham LOL |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton From: JennyO Date: 30 Jul 07 - 12:58 PM I love that one about the old men dancing too. I believe it's called Tsamiko. I reckon another album must be due. Better still, lets have George back in Oz soon. We loved having him and the lovely Vanessa here last year! Anybody who hasn't seen him perform yet - if you have any chance of getting there - beg, steal or borrow, but BE THERE. Believe me, you won't be sorry! |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton-21 Sept 2007 From: Dave the Gnome Date: 07 Sep 07 - 11:42 AM Well, just 2 weeks to go:-) Can't wait! Spoke to George earlier in the week and all is confirmed apart from you lot! Where are you? Get your bums up to Swinton:-) Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton-21 Sept 2007 From: Simon G Date: 07 Sep 07 - 11:56 AM Thinking of venturing over from Wigan. Just not sure its the done thing to see him three times in 4 months. I don't want a reputation as a groupie. Perhaps I could bring his friend and singing partner Elvis (the dog that is). On second thoughts maybe not, don't want George to be upstaged again. If you haven't seen him you must go, fantastic songs with a superb performance. You won't be disappointed, unless of course your a singer of country songs called Martin, but he is disappointed in almost everything. At our festival 99% of the audience had never even heard of George (we are very insular in South-West Lancs). All but one loved his performance, you can probably guess the name of the one. |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton-21 Sept 2007 From: Dave the Gnome Date: 17 Sep 07 - 04:29 PM Well, this is it. 5 days and counting... You would be more than welcome, Simon. Don't talk RL though - touchy subject for a Wiganer to bring up in Swinton, especialy at the birthplace of the 'Lions';-) Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton-21 Sept 2007 From: Herga Kitty Date: 17 Sep 07 - 06:15 PM Who needs fame and who needs fortune, when they're blessed with friends like these...? I've just heard George sing at Herga (aren't we lucky?!) - please make sure he's back down south from Swinton for next Monday. Kitty |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton-21 Sept 2007 From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 Sep 07 - 03:00 PM I think he is off to Yorkshire after Swinton, Kitty. I don't know what happens there... :D |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton-21 Sept 2007 From: George Papavgeris Date: 18 Sep 07 - 03:30 PM Kitty, I'm touched; compliments from you count double, not only because you've heard better, but because you've seen me week in week out from timid floorsinger to scratching the first songs to today, so I can't pull the wool over your eyes (not that anyone could!). Yes, I am Otleying Sat-Sun, but after the Sunday lunchtime session at Corks - where Vicki & Jonny and I hope to let out of the bag 2-3 of the songs we are about to record together - I'll be barelling down the M1 on my way home. Should be at Herga Monday therefore, knackered but there. |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton-21 Sept 2007 From: HipflaskAndy Date: 18 Sep 07 - 05:32 PM George is much bigger than me... and so I must highly recommend you attend this gig... or he'll take it out on me this w/e at Otley if I don't say so. Spare me a beating - go see the ol' git! Duncan McFarlane (Hi George!) |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton-21 Sept 2007 From: Peace Date: 18 Sep 07 - 06:07 PM There are few performances a guy should NOT miss. This is one of them. George, you are a brilliant writer and wonderful singer. I know you'll 'wow' 'em. Go do good, buddy. BM |

Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton-21 Sept 2007 From: Dave the Gnome Date: 22 Sep 07 - 08:20 AM Well, what a marvelous night from George. He should be in Otley by now and all I can say is lucky old Otley:-) A smashing bloke with a range of fantastic songs and a wicked sense of humour. It was a very intimate night as well with 7 audience, 3 aritists and 2 organisers! Dunno what happened to the rest of out folk club regulars but it is their loss! Luckily George was quite happy to have a relaxed evening but it was a bit embarasing for us:-( Ah well, Celler Vee as they say in Salford... Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: George Papavgeris at Swinton-21 Sept 2007 From: Simon G Date: 22 Sep 07 - 11:02 AM Its amazing how George captures his audience and enthrals them. I was there and it was a great evening. Looked around ocassionally and was amazed at the concentration on the faces of everyone in the room. There is something special about George's songs, the stories they tell, the words he uses, the tunes, the performance that is familiar but new, derived but unique. George has built something new on the foundation of a folk tradition that he has been steeped in for a couple of decades. If you missed him at Swinton rush down to Otley this weekend, or catch him next time he is in the area. Want a taster visit George's website Thanks, Dave for organising, Staff Folk for providing support and especially George for a great set. |
