Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: RogerTCB Date: 31 Aug 07 - 08:32 AM I think Grant (the landlord of the Three Horseshoes) was very pleased that the beer ran out when it did - the last thing he wants is to be left with old beer that would otherwise have to be thrown away not sold. 6X & Black Sheep (affectionately known locally as Sheep Dip) are his staples there but the festival gives him an excuse to branch out a bit and sell the Vale Brewery lines. He can't normally stock them due to supply agreements outside his control (i.e. Pub Master). For reference, the prices were the the usual ones charged before the festival opened. |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Mrs_Annie Date: 31 Aug 07 - 06:57 AM The beer at the pub was great, cheaper than the festival and came from just down the road (Haddenham). By Monday tea time there was NO REAL ALE left in the pub at all. Not even 6X or Black Sheep. (sorry locals) |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Herga Kitty Date: 30 Aug 07 - 04:21 PM 6X was murky on Monday though - Derek got a Black Sheep replacement. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: lady penelope Date: 30 Aug 07 - 04:13 PM The 6X didn't struggle with me much.... went down damn easy.... |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: The Unicorn Man Date: 30 Aug 07 - 01:31 PM Well I had a great time thanks everyone. I think the 6x struggled all weekend for some reason, but apart from that and one headless horseman that I threw away (on the last day it was a bit flat and I have drunk too much anyway) it was all very yummy. |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Micca Date: 30 Aug 07 - 12:24 PM What was the highly suspect looking red stuff (cider) they had on draught in the 3 Horseshoes? It was (reputedly) Thatchers But I eschewed an invite to taste it as I was on a "reduced alcohol intake" w/e. I did try the Thatchers" Katy" in bottles and that was VERY alcoholic, but tasted inoccouous. |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: nickp Date: 30 Aug 07 - 11:17 AM We are talking cider here not a person, Liz... aren't we!! Chuckle! |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Aug 07 - 08:59 AM Actually, he says he drinks cider which puts it into perspective. Round here Old Rosie costs £3 a go, back seat or front, park benches are extra. LTS |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Hamish Date: 30 Aug 07 - 08:26 AM Liz: I think his chosen handle tells you which is his priority ;-) (Mind you, my Headless Horseman on Monday afternoon had to be swapped. Bottom of the barrel its only problem. Otherwise, yes, as per my previous post, the beer was a highlight) -- Hamish |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Aug 07 - 08:21 AM Apart from festival organiser and concession provider, there is no connection between Steve Heap and FestivAles that I can find (and I work for the people who know)*, so suggesting that they are providing his "retirement fund" is unfair to both Steve and FestivAles. As FolkieDave says, price is relative to the area you are in - what is considered cheap in London is expensive in Sheffield. Buying your own at supermarkets is always going to be cheaper as you won't have the production, presentation or personnel costs to pay. Even then, it will vary from chain to chain and town to town. Gordons Gin in the Waitrose in Thame was £3 more expensive than the Gordons in Sainsbury's, Beckton, a distance of about 40 miles. FestivAles may charge a little more than I'm used to paying, but there aren't many pubs in east London where I can get Tanglefoot a) at all or b)that is so well kept. (If you were drinking Tanglefoot on Friday morning, it wasn't at its best because it really doesn't like rapid changes in atmospheric pressure. The sudden drop on Thursday evening would have put it out of whack, as well as giving us all that nice cold shower. Mind you, even not at its best, it was still bloody good)! I have been to purpose built pubs that were within sight of the Hall and Woodhouse Brewery where the beer has not been so well kept as that in the 'eadless 'orseman tent in a field. I think you need to prioritise - are you drinking beer to get drunk or because you like the taste? If it it's for the former, any cheap crap will do. If it's the latter, then paying a wee bit more for a great pint of beer shouldn't matter. LTS * Corporation Tax, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs. |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Folkiedave Date: 30 Aug 07 - 06:21 AM I remember being in a pub in Harrogate on a hanky waving weekend and going into a pub with a Seven Champ for a pint. Settling on a pint of Ruddles County and on being told the price I said "wow, that's dear" and the Seven Champ from darn sarf said "Wow, that's cheap!". Reaction to the price of beer depends on where you come from. Here in Sheffield it varies enormously from the outskirts - via real ale boozers to town centre pubs. I expect to pay around £2.00 a pint. But then I don't go to pubs aimed at young people. |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Ruth Archer Date: 30 Aug 07 - 06:10 AM If the biggest complaint you've got is that the beer was too expensive, it must have been a good festival, eh? Especially as no one stops you taking your own in. I had a lovely time. Great concerts, great sessions, great atmosphere in the Dance House, great Demons and Barbies party. Everyone seemed to agree that there was a wonderfully relaxed and chilled-out atmosphere throughout the festival - maybe it was everyone appreciating the gorgeous weather. Also enjoyed spotting the red kites again - they were flying really low over the showground this year. |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: GUEST,a real drunk Date: 29 Aug 07 - 12:23 PM the beer was too expensive the cider was totally out or order...Old Rosie is 2.20 around here what do festive ales think they are doing?????????? is it steve heaps retirement fund? we went to waitrose and stocked up.. paid nothing over 1.70 ber bottle (ok not a pint ..500mls but what the hell) the excercise i got carrying my 4pts per session ( 2 per day ) did me a lot of good |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Mrs_Annie Date: 29 Aug 07 - 08:37 AM Got back at about 1.30, face is crisped, throat is scratchy and feet are filthy... had a damned good time. mmm Liz, agreed on Damien Barber, quite scary too. Bry looked fabulous. And agreed about the teenagers, Last Orders seem to have grown up so much since last year. Nancy Kerr & James Fagan were really good, as were Van Eyken. Also impressed by Tom Kitching & Gren Bartley and Ruth Notman (accompanied by Saul Rose). Oysterband pulled out all the stops for Lee's last gig, quite emotional afterwards saying goodbye. I was pleased not to have to sit in the concert tent all night, I LOVE the new Dance House. Makes me feel young mixing with all those young people. ;) A wonderful festival, can't wait for next year. |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Hamish Date: 29 Aug 07 - 08:04 AM Splendid weekend: splendid! Van Eyken, Last Orders, Mike & Ali Vass, Lau, the harmony workshop... ...the sunshine, the beer... ...the whole thing! Big ~8^) Otley next... -- Hamish |
Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: GUEST,Oyster Fan Date: 29 Aug 07 - 02:42 AM Towersey will be the last time you can catch Lee, the drummer with The Oysterband, as he's off to help young offenders in our prisons full time after that. Hopefully he'll be back from time to time with the band though. Well done Lee, you'll be doing a great job, but we'll all miss seeing and hearing you with the band. You can read what he has to say here. Lee takes a break |

Subject: RE: Who's going to Towersey, UK? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 20 Aug 07 - 02:33 AM Moorley - although the Barn singing, pub sessions and morris stands are an integral part of the weekend (and indeed, what a certain proportion of the attendees go for), it's not a paid venue - the activities that go on there are purely 'fringe' and entry is free to all. Consequently, it doesn't always get included in the programme, although in recent years, it's been getting more coverage. To get there, go to any main site or campsite road gate, turn right down the hill, walk down to the cross roads (Village Hall on the right, paid venue, mind the ditch) and bear right again. The pub is a few hundred yards down this road, on the left. It's set back from the road. Warning... after several pints, what is a gentle slope downhill turns into the North Face of the Eiger getting back to the campsite. The music session in the main pub are mixed and varied, ranging from beginners English to the sort of frenetic Irish you only get after 14 pints of Guinness. I have played recorder there, accompanied by 12 melodeons, 5 bohrains and a trombone. The singaround is very much 'anything goes' as for content - no set 'doom and gloom nights' or anything... but it's run fairly and excellently by Pearl and Tony O'Neil who try very hard to make sure everyone gets at least one sing. Sunday night is 'Dress Up Night', where formal outrageous is the mode and gender specific clothing optional. LTS |

Then after that Saturday Sunday and Monday afternoon and evening and night time if people are there to sing. (Which is most of the time) |
