I really like the singing of John Reilly on 'The Voice of the People'. I tried to find out if any more recordings of him had been issued on CD and it appears not - there was a now deleted lp on Topic, 'The Bonny Green Tree', but it appears never to have been reissued on CD. Does anyone know if there are in fact more recordings of him out there and available?

Cheers

Nigel

There is a cd available from Folktrax (Irish Tinker Ballads, 1967), and tracks in The Voice of the People (Topic)

The Folktrax CD duplicates the Topic LP. However, as it was published illegally, IE., without permission having been sought, I do not think it should be on the market, and I certainly would not buy a copy.

I didn't know that some of the music available on Foltrax is not legal...

The Kennedy rip-off of the John Reilly recordings was removed from the Folktax catalogue by Dick Greenhaus after contact with the collector who recorded it.
A great deal of the catalogue is made up of recordings that the proprietor 'acquired' under questionable circumstances - see threads on this forum about Peter Kennedy.
I think that 'Bonny Green Tree' may have been bought and issued by Ossian - but I could be wrong.

'Folktax'! Love it!

The Kennedy Folktrax site - www.folktrax.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/menus/performer_r.htm
is still selling a CD of John Reilly's songs called 'The Rosin Box' and makes it damned clear that these are from Tom Munnelly's recordings.

Ossian did not release 'The Bonny Green Tree'.

Incidentally, Christy Moore's 'Desert Island Discs' appearance on the 17th June this year included Jacko's 'The Raggle Taggle Gypsy'.

The Musical Traditions listing of 'The Bonny Green Tree' for some reason includes a song called 'The Braes of Strawberries' (as opposed to Strathblane). I wonder what Rod was on at the time.

Thanks for the contributions so far. Seems like my best bet is to find a secondhand copy of the Topic vinyl.

So... erm... has anyone got one they want to sell!?

Cheers

Nigel
