Subject: Origins: That's All Right Julie 'Lyrics Request'
From: Folkie101

There's a song I heard about two years ago called "That's All Right Julie". I'm wondering if it's a traditional folk song. The lyrics are: I call you Julie, before day Julie, Julie would not answer Julie, that's all right Julie (it's repeated twice.) I'd also like to know if there are additional lyrics to this song. When I heard Ella Jenkins sing it, she only sang the lyrics above.

Thanks,
Folkie

I couldn't find lyrics for it. Seems it 'might' be a Trad. African American song. Ella is the only one who seems to have recorded it. I found a sound sample for hers. Do you want that?

Bet somebody here knows it.

Southern Gospel, sung by several groups; the Chestnut Grove Quartet sings it a cappella. Not known by me whether it is Black or White gospel, but certainly Ella Jenkins and her choir (African-American) made the song known to a wide audience.

Elvis Pressley sang "That's All Right, Mama," which seems to be related.

I remembering singing an adapted version of that song to my daughter when she was 5 or 6 years old.

"My version" goes:

"I call you, call you, call you, call you
Tasha*, Tasha, Tasha, Tasha
Tasha wouldn't answer mommy.
Tasha wouldn't answer mommy.
-snip-

I was just having fun, and trying to be creative. But I recall that Tasha didn't like this song, 'cause she would say "Yes, I do! I answer mommy". But I'd keep on singing the song.

One time when she was an adult, and we were talking about the songs we used to sing when she was little, Tasha told me that she hated that "I call you call you call you" song, because she would try to answer me, but I would keep on singing and not listen to her. She said I was mean, because it wasn't true that she wouldn't answer me. Tasha said that she was too young to understand that I was just playing. I apologized to her, because I disregarded her requests for me to stop singing that song. Tasha said that she's definitely not going to sing that song to her children.

Anyway, I'm pleased to say that my daughter grew up to be a wonderful adult with a positive sense of self, in spite of her mean ole mommy.

*Tasha is not my daughter's real name. My daughter doesn't want me to post her name on the Internet. And-see?-I listened to her.

I'm not sure where I learned this song. I think it was from an Ella Jenkins record {probably the same one mentioned above}.

I see that the song is listed as a Children's song on several web sites. I'll keep searching. Thanks for your help.

Btw, if anyone has the Sing Out songbook, please check to see if "It's All Right Julie" is listed.

Not in "Rise Up Singing," I think the latest Sing Out songbook.
