The only tunnel the Yellowbellies would dig would be the one to plant a million tonnes of dynamite under that stronghold of Yorkshire so as to watch as a cloud of dust in the shape of a Barnsley chop drifted skywards ;-)

There was an excellent sound engineer fron Barnsley, first name Steve, last name Rushbie or something similar. He had a daughter - Catherine? - that was a pretty good singer; she had a problem with altitude, I believe, she was a girl that couldn't fly or something like that. I don't know what happened to her. But she was good.

Did anybody ever develop Dave Burland's idea of reviving the area by opening 'dude pits'

The' wez supposed te be like them 'dude ranches' in America where city-folk gan te pretend te be cowboys. The idea being that holiday makers could gan te Barnsley and work in the mines for a day/week and get the feel of how it used te be.

Apparently it meant paintin' the coal white so as not te get anybody's claes mucky.

A missed opportunity aah thowt!

Good Luck to you Banjo Flower, Padge , Booker and all the rest at Whitby . I am at work 30 miles north of Whitby 10.30am on Thursday and the sun is cracking the pavement already !!! Hope to get there on Friday sometime. All folkies deserve a bit of sun after the poxy weather we've had this summer - so fingers crossed that it lasts .
Back to the thread - surely, Barnsley Bitter (loosely) fit's the bill.

Kathryn Roberts is a mighty fine singer. Younger sibling Jamie is a bit good too.

Of course Kate Rusby (I know some people will have a go at her for being......er, what's the word?.....successful but I think she's fab. There, said it)

Zoe Bottomley is a great singer and her dad has a great collection of beautiful guitars.

Another Barnsley lass worth checking out is Steph Shaw.

Go Barnsley!

Gerry :-)

I'm not sure Dave and Marjorie would claim to be Best Folkies from out of Barnsley being somewhat proud of their Scottish heritage and not really being from Barnsley but living nearby. Unless of course Best Folkies from out of Barnsley means any musician who has visited Barnsley. Woo hoo! that means I'm from Barnsley too!

Chris regular at Whitby FF working with kids

Robin Garside originally from Penistone cut his folk teeth at Barnsley Civic club

On another thread I have listed many a folky and where they ended up
eg Prof Steve Linstead (Durham) John Ashton (Newfoundland), John Dakin, Colin Thompson

These lists are all very well, Ray, but to get to the original point - who is the *best*?!?!?

Tough I know, so I propose a Top Trumps style play off - each folkie being awarded points for a series of desirable traits in a folk singer from barnsley the one with highest overall score is the winner -

I need everyones inputs on this - but for starters suggest

'Number of songs in Repetoire'
and
'Number of Verses in Longest Song'

Sarah x

Where has Sharon gone ?

She was in the Meadow Hotel in Sheffield last time I was there a couple of months ago.   I know that it was shut down but I was rather hoping that she would get another local pub.

Hi Ray

Should be at the Sheff folk fest. Have moved from Stocksbridge so don't have to worry about the buses so much.   Not sure if we will be running as session - need to talk to the organisers but should defintely be at some of the singarounds.

see you there

Sorry John Platt

Criteria may have a bearing on the outcome!

Probably Dave Burland

I once referred to Kate Rusby in the Telegraph as the best thing to come out of Barnsley, and immediately received a postcard from someone in Birmingham telling me that only Dave Burland could ever qualify for the description.........but as many people will know, Kate wouldn't quarrel with that anyway since he's been a hero of hers from childhood. I interviewed her recently for Salut! Live and she regarded Dave's thumbs-up for her new album as the ultimate seal of approval.
Dave did the first guest spot at my first folk club, in my home town, Shildon, Co Durham, in or around 1967. It was a fairly grim club, and Dave's performance, and friendliness, are among my few happy memories of the place before we moved the club to the big city (Bishop Auckland).

Dave Burland has a lot to answer for

The first clubs were run by Tony Heald [an accomplished artist today and retired teacher] joined by Dave Burland, Jim Potter, Derek and Dorothy Elliot, and latterly the young hustling Robin Garside k/as Wild Orange! ran on Saturday nights with no doubt underage drinking etc ~ the place to be!!

The club was encouraged by Barnsley MBC, via John Simmonds entertainments manager

Dave, Jim and Tony were the mainstays in the 1970s and Derek and Dorothy opened their King George Folk on the Monday

Barnsley fc still runs on Mondays at the Shaw Inn

Steve and Ann Rusby sang together in the early days and had a Ceildh band with Ann on Accordion, Steve played banjo still live at Cawthorne about 3 miles from Barnsley centre and near Penistone {penny stone!!] where folk took off with Garside and Gough (Paul's from Cleethorpes) where they went professional for a time and then joined to form a group called Tom Tiddler's ground with among others Brian Dewhurst/Preston

Deighton family, Dave was a melodeon player and had a family band including Rosie Arthur Maya and wife Josie

Josie and Dave live in Barnsley still and family "all over" I think Arthur in Holland where Josie came from

One Deighton family member on the folk scene nationally I think Rosie?

Dave at Leeds College of Music was making instruments last I spoke to him

Dominic Dudill studied music at Barnsley College, his dad being a dance caller, he went to Manchester and plays with two bands the one local to Barnsley being James Cannon and the Sinners who are quite some band doing Irish

James of course is Sean Cannon's son!! grew up in Barnsley

Others are Dave Fisher who plays with Dave Burland's Rock and Roll Band and Bryan Ledgard who did album sleeves for folkies

the Bretton college people had one early folkie who worked at the old night club in Barnsley who went to do perfoming arts teaching at Barnsley College ~ name escapes me at the mo'
Others at Bretton did pottery and came from Stoke way
