I work at umgd an picked up on this Queen album called " The A-Z of Queen, Vol 1." Check this out, the track listings is down right good stuff. That's what I think of it. It isn't a complete review until more people review it, my bud complains. So here's the track listings.

I own Queen Greatest Hits, vol. 1 and 2 and it is a treasure to me. They are definitely in my top 3 all time favorite bands. Some really great songs on this CD.

Same here! Just because we are mostly folkies doesn't mean we don't like other music too. Queen is one of my favourite bands - always has been.

There are certain songs that, if they play them on the radio while I'm in my car, I turn the volume way up and "rock on" with them. Bohemian Rhapsody is one of those songs. As it happens, they played it yesterday. I don't care if the other drivers think I'm mad. Another one of those songs is "Power and the Passion" by Midnight Oil. But times change - Peter Garrett is a politician now. Oh well.

Last Christmas, John got me (at my request) a DVD of Pink Floyd "The Dark Side of the Moon". Now I know what he can get me this Christmas! Much as I love Queen, the only thing I have of theirs is a record (yes, one of those big round things) of "A Night at the Opera". Time that was rectified.

All this from a died-in-the-wool folkie who runs a folk club!

I feel safe now in coming out of the closet, and stating that I wear it as a badge of pride that I saw Queen in a 2,000-seater hall (Preston Guild Hall, Lamcashire) - and there were still empty seats.

It was after Killer Queen but - crucially - before Bohemian Rhapsody, when everything just went crazy. They were still rockers, who happened to use harmonies, before the harmonies became the be-all-and-end-all. And the showmanship was terrific.

And ... er, ahem, I was very young, obviously.

Norma Waterson recorded Freddie Mercury's "Love of My Life" on her solo album, The Very Thought of You, as well as Lal's song, "Reply to Joe Haines", which is a direct rebuke to Haines for his offensive remarks about Mercury... Norma's description of the song:

At once a lament for/tribute to Freddie Mercury (real surname Bulsara, as in this song} & a stinging rejoinder to Joe Haines. Norma's own note refers to the 'white knuckle fury of my sister Lal's 'Reply to Joe Haines' (originally called 'An Open Letter to Joe Haines') which is just that. A reply to the iniquitous article written by that man on the subject of Freddie Mercury's disclosure that he was HIV positive (indeed that he had full blown AIDS) and which the Daily Mirror saw fit to print.'

And de Danaan did a wonderful Celtoid instumental version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" that they re-titled "Hibernian Rhapsody", on their album of the same name.

Good musicians are interested in all sorts of music, and garner songs, styles and ideas that feed into their own music!

The Queen "best of" CDs are very good. But yes, probably the wrong place to be reviewing rock CDs...

It may not get as many replies here as some other sites, but as for it being the "wrong place"? I disagree. Who says the original poster has to only pick one site, anyway? I wouldn't mind betting that he/she may have posted on other sites too, to get opinions of different groups of people. And that's fine with me.

I for one am enjoying discussing one of the other styles of music I like. As for Freddie Mercury - he was a most interesting man. I'll add more later, when I have time, about his forays into the world of opera! Or maybe somebody else will before I get a round tuit ;-)
