Subject: Tune Req: Mary From Dungloe Tune incorrect? From: GUEST,John Maddock Date: 03 Sep 07 - 12:58 PM Hi there, I'm looking for the tune to "Mary From Dungloe": preferably as close as possible to the version that Show of Hands use. Currently the DT entry for this lovely song: http://sniff.numachi.com/pages/tiDUNGLOE;ttSTARDOWN.html has the tune from the "Star of the County Down" http://sniff.numachi.com/pages/tiSTARDOWN;ttSTARDOWN.html which doesn't seem right to me at all :-) The original thread here: http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=3022 has two midi's attached, should I assume that maydun2.mid is really the correct one? From memory it sounds more or less right, but I'm not completely sure. Many thanks on any light you can shed on the subject, Regards, John Maddock. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mary From Dunglo Tune incorrect? From: GUEST Date: 03 Sep 07 - 01:31 PM Thanks for the link: I actually have your site bookmarked - lots of useful info there - but didn't look there for that song! Oh well, that's three different sets of chords I have now :-) Seems like every performer changes the chords at the end of the second and third line, 'cos no-one seems to agree :-) However, it's the tune I really want, so I can re-arrange it for my mandolin. The link to the midi's at http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=3022 appear to be wrong after all: they're in 4/4 time as far as I can see, and the tune I know is definitely 3/4. Thanks, John. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mary From Dunglo Tune incorrect? From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 03 Sep 07 - 01:50 PM Here's the tune from O'Lochlainn's Irish Street Ballads. It's similar to the midi files in the other thread, but definitely in 6/8. According to the Roud Index, O'Lochlainn is the only source for the song (according to Roud's notes he supplied the version printed in Roud's other reference for the Irish FSJ). (Despite this I can't help but feel I've heard it sung in 4/4 similar to the midi) Mick X:1 T:Mary From Dungloe S:Collected by Colm O'Lochlainn from W.Feenan of Ardglass 1913 B:Colm O'Lochlainn: Irish Street Ballads N:Roud 3001 L:1/8 M:6/8 K:C ED|C2 C B2 c|A2 c (G<E)D|E2 D C2 C|C3-C2 w:Oh, then fare ye well, sweet Don-e-gal,_ the Ross-es and Gwee-dore._ G|c2 c d2 e|c3 BAG|A2 c (G<E)D|E3-E2 w:I'm cross-ing the main o-cean, where the foam-ing bill_ows roar,_ G|c2 c d2 e|c2 c BAG|ABc (GE)D|E3-E2 w:It breaks my heart from you to part, where I spent ma-ny hap_py days._ (E/D/)|C2 C B2 c|(A2 c) G2 E/D/|E2 D/D/ C2 C|C3-C2|| w:Fare_well to kind re-la_tions, for I'm bound for A-me-ri-kay. _ |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mary From Dunglo Tune incorrect? From: GUEST Date: 05 Sep 07 - 01:16 PM Many thanks for the tune! It does indeed sound quite similar to the 4/4 version, but it's so much easier to start from one already in the correct time signature :-) Regards, John. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Mary From Dunglo Tune incorrect? From: Backwoodsman Date: 06 Sep 07 - 12:33 PM Ummm, I might be stoopid, but why not just LISTEN to Show of Hands and play along with them? Twice through and you'll know it - we're talking a short, simple folk-melody here, not Beethoven's 9th! LOL! If you know it well enough to sing it, it's not a leap of light-years to play it. IMHO, of course. |
