Sorry but cannot get to the funeral. Just found out the arrangements and I cannot get away from work commitments. It is good that so many can get there. Sing well, Colin deserved it.

I hope to be there on Friday, but can't say for definite. Really need to be there just so that it becomes more of a reality and less like a bad dream.
Does anyone know of a place to stay Friday night close by as I really don't think that I will feel like driving back ?

Might be an idea if people drop by skipton station on spec rather than arranging things in advance. I am not sure when I will be arriving, I guess the 10:52 but don't really know.

Cllr and I will be there - we are staying at the Woolly Sheep in Skipton on Thursday night (although we probably won't arrive until after 8pm). If anyone needs a lift from the Crem we will have 2 seats spare in the car although we are staying in Nelson on Friday night.

See you all there. Sniff.

I won't be able to make the trip across the pond, but it is not from lack of desire that this is so. Col, judging from these posts, was one of those giants that occasionally tread the path, touching all that come within the sacred circle of his presence, and leaves them feeling the warmth that only great hearts possess. Were I able to be there, I would certainly sing a song that ere I have only sung once publicly, at the funeral of my best friend. And that would be Dave Carter's "When I Go", which I became aware of from Jeri. It is a stunning lyic, and I would have been honored to sing it for all of you on behalf of this gentle giant of a friend. I commend to all of you, as you ponder, in this time of sorrow, the frailties of this life, the last verse of this wonderful song:

And should you glimpse my wandering form out on the borderline
Between death and resurrection and the council of the pines
Do not worry for my comfort, do not sorrow for me so
All your diamond tears will rise up and adorn the sky beside me
When I go

Wow!! what a great response so far. Thank you all, especially the help with blue clickys and the insertation of late news.

There is no finishing time for the Big Sing so late arrivals needn't worry.but should it peter out early the club is in walking distance of Eileen and Maurice's where a "gentle wake" might continue.

We are hoping to create a Friendship type Photo Album for Col's Mum so if you have a great photo print of Colin with other folkies, it would be great if you'd bring them along annotated on the back with details of who, what, when, and where.

Walking back to my room in Tokyo,
the wind blowing and the rain masking my sadness,
there is a typhoon coming but somehow I'm not scared,
in my mind's eye I can still picture Colin, the big friendly shantyman who had time and a caring word for everyone, even a brash young Muldoon. My life is enriched to have known him and my thoughts will be with all his family and friends as from across the oceans I join in
the final sing off.

I shall be taking the car into Leeds to work, and will be planning on leaving city centre at 11am (ish), so if anyone would like a ride to Skipton, please call.

As part of my contribution to Colin, I am opening up my place for people who are coming a long way. There are a couple of beds for those who have bad backs, but it will mainly be floor space, but there is plenty of that.

The thing is, I have to know you first!

I think from now on, Father Christmas will have ColK's face for me.....

Lynne, the first time I took part in Secret Santa, in 2003, it was Col's face for me. He was my Secret Santa. And a fine and generous one he was, too. You're right, that is a beautiful photo. I'm just sorry I never got to meet him.

Of course, I can't make it to the funeral either, being in Oz, but I will stop and think about him at the appropriate time. What a great loss for us! And a bit of a wake up call for me too, considering I am 3 years older than him, and don't take as much care of my health as I should.

We were so sorry to hear of Colin's passing. Saltburn Folk Festival will not be the same without him. He was one of those very special people who is everybody's friend: problems simply dissappeared when he was around to be replaced with smiles. We will remember Colin and be proud to say "We knew Colin Kemp."

I can't make it either as my aged parents are arriving from Australia tomorrow for an all too brief stay. I will go to my quiet place in the garden at the right time and send my thoughts to you all and to Col. I hate crematoria funerals anyway, but I would have liked to sing him on his way. There's something very healing about a large crowd of folkie friends belting out a big chorus in someone's memory.

The photo link on the other thread of Col and duckling is so beautiful, I will hold that in my mind as I do my little solitary ritual.

I think from now on, Father Christmas will have ColK's face for me.....

Love Lynne

I am sorry that Anahata and I won't be able to get to the funeral or wake. Sing a song on our behalf please - something loud and happy!

Colin was one of the best stewards we have ever had the privilege of meeting at a festival - nothing was ever too much trouble and he was unfailingly cheerful, helpful and full of enthusiasm. Our sincere condolences to all his family. I hope it is some consolation to know how much he was loved and respected by the whole folk community.

And, thanks to Theresa for putting the information about donating over the phone to the RNLI. Ours has gone in today.

Here is a Multimap link for The New Palatine Club, 32 Norfolk Street, Nelson Lancs BB9 7FG where the Jacob's Join will be.

Edain and Breton Cap - I will be coming to the funeral and it looks as though I will have room for three people in the car. I should be able to offer lifts from the crematorium out to Nelson. Depending on timimgs, I might also be able to collect from the station and save you the taxi.
Send me a PM and we can sort out mobile phone numbers.
Quack!

And there's nothing on earth that can save me
Don't weep and don't mourn
Send me off with a song
And reflect on the pleasure that knowing you gave me.

What is dying?

The ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon
and someone at my side says 'She is gone'.
Gone where? Gone from sight, that is all; she is just as large as when I saw her.

The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone at my side says 'She is gone' there are others who are watching her coming and other voices take up a glad shout 'There she comes'

and that is dying.
