Hally Wood lived in New York City and for awhile on Long Island from the late 1940s until 1953. She was deeply interested in southern US traditional songs and music, did many local performances, singing in a unique, expressive, most unforgetable voice. She died in 1989.

Some friends who still live in the area are getting together on September 29, to remember and honor her, and the public is invited. Those who will share memories and stories, sing songs she liked, and be available for visiting with audience members are Oscar Brand, Anna Lomax, Joe Hickerson, John Cohen,Robin Roberts,Frank Davis,Jean Ritchie, George Pickow, and Cynthia Faulk Ryland(Hally's daughter). Those coming if they are able are Pete Seeger, Mike Seeger, Roger Sprung.

Place: The Living Room 154 Ludlow St, NYC 10002 (between Stanton and Rivington Streets-just south of Houston St.) 212 533-7235

Time:   3:00- 9:00 PM (Doors open at 3:00. Seating and informal visiting before actual beginning, for a few minutes).

Format: Each "performer" onstage will have a few minutes to tell of his/her times with Hally, sing one of the songs she loved, etc.
After this round, there will be a break for a complimentary light
supper. Bar will be open for purchase of drinks. Then the program will continue with more discussions, songs, the audience joining in with contributions to the discussions, with questions they may have, or with stories and songs to share.

Cost: $45 per person. As the event will be recorded, each ticket holder will be presented with a CD of the program, in addition to supper. None of the performers are being paid, and are in fact buying their own tickets at the cost above, so that this Hally Wood Tribute can take place.

Contact: James Mason 610 360-8884 (PO Bx 1007,Easton, PA 18044)

We think that this will be a joyous and even an historical event. We hope to see many of you there!                Kytrad

What a grand idea! Living and working on the (far) left coast, I won't be able to attend, but pehaps the CD could be made available after the fact as a memento to those who send in a donation?

Hally's husband was John Henry Faulk who sued CBS successfully during the McCarthy era for discrimination in his political views. He was accused of being a communist and won a lot of money from them.

I wish we could sue Bush for his misuse of the "terrorist" label.

Hally was a great musician and not only sounded like the real deal as a folksinger, she annotated a lot of the folk material for publication.

I loved her version of "St. James Hospital".

Hally had unique grace and beauty as a singer of traditional songs. She was one of the few who could sing as remarkably as any of the best roots singers.

Her LPs "O Lovely Appearance of Death" (Elektra) and "Texas Folk Songs" (Stinson) show her singing with clarity and strength and a timeless appeal. A late LP that never found a market (Sandy Paton can tell the story of that) showed her nearly as good in her late years as she had been earlier.

She should have been recorded much more than she was. But she was hard to catch up with, and the dominant producers of the folk era didn't press her to put her wonderful music on record.

Hally was also one of the few ever to succeed admirably at noting traditional tunes the way they were sung, freed from the preconceptions of classically trained music scholars.

May her wonderful music live on in all of us.

Bob

Bob Coltman- If you're nearby, I'm sure everyone would like to have you come and join us. I hear that Carolyn Paton may be there- no word as yet if Sandy will, also. It will be great to hear Hally's music again- Jim Mason says that they'll be playing her recordings, some of which were never issued. It would be great to see you again!

I knew Hally and her daughter Tanny during the eighties while living in Houston. I enjoyed the friendship of this wonderful lady in her later years. She was a great singer, Her version of Little Birdie was my favorite. I'm sorry that i will not be able to attend this event. It would be so nice to visit with old friends again.
