My History studies at college are focussed at the moment on the the Irish settlers in Scotland (1840-1870) and the Scottish migration to America and other colonies (19th century in general). Also The influx of Italian and Lithuanian workers to Scotland for the same periods.
I've decided to use quotes from any appropriate songs/ballads to illustrate my essays.
Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Hope this helps a bit.
Try locating the words to Tom Russell's "Immigrant Eyes"

Also his Folk Opera which is about the Irish Immigrating to North America

I thought Immigrant Eyes (click) was written by Tom Russell, but wiser folks than I say Guy Clark & Roger Murrah.

My mistake Joe. It certainly was written by Guy Clark and Roger Murrah.
Both Tom and Guy are some of my favorite and I got mixed up.

i did emigration from Ireland for my dissertation also though the main focus was on America. Some ballads that i used were; "paddy's green shamrock shore" "by the hush" "the green fields of Canada" The shamrock shore" "thousands are sailing" & "skibbereen". Also John Moulden has written an excellent book on a similar theme called "thousands are sailing". Frank Harte also did a radio broadcast in the 80's on emigration and i think that can still be found on RTE radio 1's website.

hope this helps!

Thanks to you all. I have my first exam on the subject of Irish-Scottish migration soon and am intending to use quotes to illustrate my themes.

"The influx of Italian and Lithuanian workers to Scotland for the same periods.

Now that might be harder when it come to finding appropriate songs.

I would submit Tom Russell's "Who's Gonna Build Your Wall" and Dave Massengill's "Once I Rode An Orphan Train" as well as his "My Name Jose"These are some of the most moving songs that I have ever listened to.
