Subject: Need songs about Christopher Columbus From: Doug Chadwick Date: 22 Sep 07 - 03:40 AM I'm putting together a 15 minute musical sketch for children (8 to 11 years old) very loosely based on Christopher Columbus. Does anyone have any suggestions for songs? They don't necessarily have to mention him by name but could just be could be about travelling to unknown, distant places and the like. Perhaps the most important thing is that they don't want to be too serious. I've had a look in the DT so there's no need to link to there. Also, does anyone have any good one-liners about old Chris that could be worked into the script? Thanks in anticipation DC |
Subject: Lyr Add: IN 1492 + COLUMBUS DAY From: Sky Sailor Date: 22 Sep 07 - 03:49 AM Doug, Here are a couple to start you off: IN 1492 In fourteen hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue. He had three ships and left from Spain; He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain. He sailed by night; he sailed by day; He used the stars to find his way. A compass also helped him know How to find the way to go. Ninety sailors were on board; Some men worked while others snored. Then the workers went to sleep; And others watched the ocean deep. Day after day they looked for land; They dreamed of trees and rocks and sand. October 12 their dream came true, You never saw a happier crew! "Indians! Indians!" Columbus cried; His heart was filled with joyful pride. But "India" the land was not; It was the Bahamas, and it was hot. The Arakawa natives were very nice; They gave the sailors food and spice. Columbus sailed on to find some gold To bring back home, as he'd been told. He made the trip again and again, Trading gold to bring to Spain. The first American? No, not quite. But Columbus was brave, and he was bright. COLUMBUS DAY ("Mary Had a Little Lamb") Columbus sailed the ocean blue, Ocean blue, ocean blue. Columbus sailed the ocean blue, In fourteen-ninety-two. Columbus sailed the ocean blue, Ocean blue, ocean blue. I enjoy making discoveries, too. How about you? They came from this site Regards Derek |

Subject: Lyr Add: COLUMBUS (Nancy Schimmel) From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Sep 07 - 10:25 AM And for your further consideration: COLUMBUS by Nancy Schimmel (Malvina Reynolds' daughter) (as sung by Faith Petric) In fourteen hundred and ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue It was a courageous thing to do But someone was already there Columbus thought that the world was round So he looked for the East while westward bound But he didn't find what he thought he'd found For someone was already there The Inuit and Cherokee The Aztec and Menominee The Onondaga and the Cree Columbus sailed across the sea But someone was already there Now it isn't like it was empty space The Caribs met him face to face Could anyone discover a place When someone was already there So tell me who discovered what He thought he was in a different spot Columbus was lost but the Caribs were not They were already there Chorus Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Need songs about Christopher Columbus From: GUEST,The black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 22 Sep 07 - 11:09 AM There's the verse from Tom Lewis's "I'm marching inland" Columbus he set sail to find out if the world was round, He went on sailing to the west until he ran aground. He thought he'd found the Indies, but he'd found the USA. I know some navigators who can still do that today. |

Subject: Lyr Add: DOWN IN THE CARIBBEAN (Mitchell Torok) From: Metchosin Date: 24 Sep 07 - 12:27 AM DOWN IN THE CARIBBEAN (Mitchell Torok) Have you ever been down to Haiti when the summer sun was sinkin' low There's nothing but romance just everywhere you glance And the native hearts are all aglow But when the Cuban Queen comes upon the scene They all stare like a statue out of stone When they realize what's before their eyes the other girls are left all alone Chorus Down in the Caribbean, it's not a dream you're seein' When you get a glimpse of the lady with the charm And from miles away you can see her sway To the beat of the Cuban Conga line that forms Up in a tree so high way up in the sky sits a wide-eyed monkey on a limb He wonders why the people go to so much trouble just to try to be like him He doesn't understand that it's a lady's hand that makes a heart feel so sublime And before too long he starts singing the song and then he gets in the Conga line Columbus searched for spices but he missed the nicest part of the Caribbean He didn't see the charms and the open arms it was the gold that he was seein' But I'm glad he missed the sweetest thing I've kissed cause we're on our honeymoon I'm so sorry Chris to talk about you like this but you were five hundred years too soon Down in the Caribbean... |
