Yes, the technology has arrived. Last night I jammed with a mandolin player and a guitar player in Montreal, and a flute player in Winnipeg, all while sitting right here in Connecticut. The four of us played as though we were all sitting in the same room…no lag whatsoever….singing harmonies, taking solos, etc. One of the guys (somebody has to be the techie, and it ain't me) has figured out how to not only do this, but also capture it all live and broadcast it live as a stream to any number of listeners. The sound quality is phenomenal (44.1/128mpbs – whatever that means, but I think it is essentially CD quality).

Yeah, I know it is not the same as us all being together in 3D, but I am blown away by the whole thing. At long last I will be able to jam once again with an old friend who moved away years and years ago.

The last time I smoked anything was 1989 and that was a cigarette.

so this sounds better than paltalk..and more interactive..simultaneous..
have you got any more clues about how others could accomplish this?

Hi open mike,

This leaves paltalk in the dust in terms of sound quality and capability. Second Life (www.secondlife.com) is where this all happens. SL is pretty overwhelming, but I have managed to learn how to focus on the music there leave the rest. You need a relatively good ( 2 GHz processor/1 GB memory) pc and a fast connection to use it. The sound quality is superb. Now that multiple people can talk and hear at the same time, it is possible to play music with people from anywhere in the world. Simply amazing!

dw - who would never have believed it either.

My most sincere CONGRADULATIONS!!!

The world has changed - people like you will help MudChat move beyond Digital.

Are you also using video? I understand it is possible....but for me.....I tune to the sound, and in a groove and comfortable close the eyes....it is about communication....a four-part-video seems too distracting.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

But I can imagine the day .... when an audience PAYS to see a LIVE quartet (in real time streaming media) combined from four corners of the globe.

Hell, Garg, as long as you are imagining the day, throw in 3D hologramic body structures. Add a little haptic interaction and you can stay in a cocoon forever! :D

That's good news, dwditty! I remember the days in HearMe and PalTalk when we wished it were possible.

My Rog tells me that Reporters Without Borders has been playing around in there, too.

There is an interesting article in the New York Times about a symphony orchestra which built a virtual concert hall there where a 3D live concert of theirs was broadcast.

Maybe we could actually build that Mudcat Tavern with the jello pit!

Ohhh... Harpy!!!... they ARE there....some acoustic, some electric, but most the ol' squeeze-box....however, NOTHING like...YOU might imagine.

DWITTY - it is A Hope to Play in one setting with friends in Canada, Oregon, Maryland and Germany....it is worth the midnight oil...and the toil to bring it all together again.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Strange translations in the Mudcat sun....YIPES...the golly-goosebump-gee-willys run down my spine when I look at pictures of you and the past confusion with Abby....thanks for setting us straight.

If you Google "Second life concerts" you will find quite a lot of artists.

Suzanne Vega was the first major artist to appear in August 2006 and there is an article about it here.

There was a great video at Second Life, of the virtual-making of her virtual guitar for her concert there. Very interesting.

What a bizarre place. Sort of a SIMS for the Geriatirics group. Do you get to kill anyone?

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Gargoyle, I have a "real life" friend who goes to Second Life. He mostly gets around in a giant flying FedEx truck. He goes to a place called Cracktown alot - even I am afraid to ask. "Bizarre" doesn't even scratch the surface. In any event, I give him "in world" money that I earn playing gigs there so he can play around...he buys me drinks at the local pub on Thursday nights - a perfect match.

I am not sure about killing people, but the griefers there do like to raise some hell.

I will search it out some more. If I can become a flying griffen with claws to snatch off wigs and topaes, I could have a fine feathered nest on the Chrysler Building.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

This could be just the place I've been looking for.
