So now we have 27 that I know of, plus some locals will appear on an ad hoc basis.

Llanfair + Monty
LtS + Manitas + Limpit
MeganL + Dauvitt
Skarpi + Gunna + Daughter Helga, Rosa, and her husband Helgi.
Jim Lad + Brenda
Lady P
Weerover [possible]
Murray MacLeod + Fine Singer

Effsee
Catherine Jayne + Paul + Sprog [on west coast ;)]
Lurking Catter + Kitten

Any additions or subtractions?

I see that the Invershin Hotel will help you book other Bed & Breakfasts if they're full. We may just take them up on that. We'll have our 3 year old with us and maybe one of my wee sisters to do the driving.
Now... Is there anywhere that I can get a decent pint of heavy?

There is still space if people are prepared to share a room, Graham has mostly double rooms, and he is being asked for mostly single accommodation.
Couldn't Audrey and Llanfair and Monty share a room at the hotel, it would make it easier for Graham, and easier for getting to bed pissed :-)

Can I issue a general warning please?

Jack has just come out of Rehab. He's a changed puppy (well, he smells better for a start) and is a bit fragile. Can we all make a special effort not to entice him back into his former lifestyle. If anyone is caught offering him a drink or a cigarette, they get to take him home and so suffer the consequences.

DO NOT GET THE PUPPY DRUNK!

Liz, just for you

Here's to the fox
In his earth below the rocks!
And here's to the line that we follow,
And here's to the hound
With his nose upon the ground,
Though merrily we whoop and we hollow.

Then drink puppy drink,
And let every puppy drink
That is old enough to lap and to swallow;

For he'll grow into a hound,
So we'll pass the bottle 'round,
And merrily we'll whoop and we'll hollow. (Repeat refrain

Monty will be delighted to have a young'un to play with. I'm sure he'll be a good influence, having been brought up Chapel, as are all the born and bred around here.

There will need to be a short Welsh lesson for all gatherers, as, although he understands the English, his first language is Welsh.I wouldn't be surprised if he picked up a bit of Scots Gaelic during his visit.

It's only his lack of opposable thumbs that stops him driving.

I cannot guarantee that Mont will not show the pup how to roll in something unspeakable before coming in for a fuss. In fact it will be a certainty, because he has to have a bath before going a-travelling.

Best wishes to all of you. I wish I could be there.

The hotel web site makes my mouth water.

Well, except for my doubts about its name. Hotel Invershin? Is that actually the Hotel Inversion? You aren't about to be sucked into a time-warp or into a different space-time continuum are you? I mean, are ye?

Inver is like aber, when used as a prefix it means 'mouth of' so Aberdeen is the mouth of the Dee, and Abertawe is the mouth of the Tawe, so by extrapolation, Invershin, is the moth of the Shin, and Inverness is the mouth of the Ness.
Ness itself is also a geographical word, and means a headland.

You beat me to it Giok.

Ir is with great regret that I have to say that I will be unable to attend this coming weekend.

The double room available is the one which I had reserved for myself + Fine Singer, but which , regrettably I have now had to cancel.

We are relocating to Edinburgh, a move which was not foreseen when I booked originally, and have to accomplish this by the end of the month.

The logistics of combining work + moving necessitate that this weekend is taken up with organising the move.

I am bitterly disappointed at having to miss what will undoubtedly be a memorable weekend, but I am afraid there is no alternative.

I hope that Jim Lad will be able to take advantage of the late booking opportunity, and that the weekend will be as successful as it promises to be.

If you repeat the exercise next year, I will be there come hell or high water ...

Hi y'all! Home, washed and fed by my beloved Parker and affie glad I don't have to go to work tomorrow...

Cracking weekend, some excellent musicians and characters made it an occasion to savour, and it was lovely to get back up north (although the complete lack of lorne sausage was dreadful dissapointment to me - Giok take note... *G* ).

Jack has actually been through detox (or was that the 'stains' cycle....) and was teetotal for the entire weekend. Kitted out in his new cold weather gear (the most stunning jersey and matching bobble hat..!!!) we were all gob smacked when Skarpi decided that Jack should go back to Iceland with him. Is Iceland ready for this we ask ourselves? But now we can say that he's truly away with the fairies....

Got home about a couple of hours ago but I couldn't get onto Mudcat to post. A bit of a panic when the train from Invershin arrived in Inverness 3 minutes after the Edinburgh connection should have left, but they held it up for us so that was OK. Other than that, it was an uneventful trip.

I find it difficult to believe that Jack had to go into rehab - he was the very model of decorum all weekend (as was Monty).

A superb weekend, meeting and making friends old and new, with lots of good music. Seeing salmon leaping up the waterfalls was a first for me and is a special memory of the "Invershindig".

Thanks for organising it Giok.

It's 11-30pm, and Monty and I have just got home. Mont slept most of the way, I've never seen him so tired!!

It has been a wonderful weekend, Giok, thanks so much for organising it and we'll be back next year.

Cheers, Bron.

Doug - Jack was a model of decorum because he'd just come OUT of Rehab... he's in Iceland now, so I'm hoping he'll be OK.

At least he smells better.

From the bridge

I saw the mist lie softly
and flow across the bay.
I saw the castle bathed in gold
at the dawning of the day.
I saw the wild fish loupin
and heard the birdies sing.
And altogether thought that life
wis such a bonnie thing.

I heard the cock a crowing
and saw the wild geese fly.
The soft clouds sweet reflection
drew forth a peaceful sigh.
And I thought o aw the places
that I hae ever bin
Theres nane quite sae beautiful
as the bonnie river Shin.

If I can persuade Manitas, and Giok organises another gathering next year, we're going to take a few extra days and really make it to John O'Groats! (Hints to self: Start earlier in the day, stop looking at scenery, drive in the middle of the road and don't believe signs that say the cafe is open).

Still, it was a fabulous time, I travelled further north than I have ever been and paddled in the sea. After a few minutes the cold makes you lose all feeling in your feet so it's not so bad after that.

I saw so much beautiful countryside, buzzards galore, pheasant, considerably more than twa corbies (hooded crows, just like ordinary crows but wearing grey waistcoats), lovely Hieland coos, sheep beyond number (and is there a rule that says every 20 white sheep must be accompanied by one black sheep?) a woodcock and some tits.

The photo I submitted of the river - it really is the river, honest! It was just so calm and still that morning; there was no hint of breeze to ruffle the surface and the current is deep and slow, but it was flowing.

And it was lovely to have a singaround in a room that didn't stink of cigarette smoke.

Effsee - you must be imagining things... we're all fine, none of us brought anything with us, but Limpit now has a fine Scottish mist type sneeze.

If we'd known you wanted to do more in the afternoons, we'd have organised something but for many of us, it was the first opportunity to get so far north and as it was fantastic weather, we thought we'd make the most of it. You could have come with us as native bearer if you wanted... we needed someone to check out the haggis and cheese panini on offer at Bettyhill.

Oh and don't worry about Jack being led astray - just look at my flickr page and see the photos of his aversion therapy. He's even taken up the penny whistle if you look at Lady P's pics!

When you say staffing problems, is that in getting them or not wanting them?

It's a bit far for me to commute but I'd give it a go....

Well it will still happen, just possibly not there. We have run a musical weekend at the Royal Hotel in Cromarty before, it's just not so good for transport links.
They have a big function room, and 150 different malt whiskies available at the bar. They also did us a lovely sit down dinner on the Saturday evening.
Giok

How about trying the Craggan at Melness next time? It's not near the train, but the PostBus from Lairg still stops there.....(ulterior motive - my house is walking distance from the Craggan!)

At this time of year, there are loads of self-catering places available, as well as BnBs.

It IS a long way north (on a clear day, you can see Orkney), but the scenery is gorgeous, the food is good, the barstaff are friendly, and I quite like the locals.....

"Half of them are my cousins......" Jings, I thought they all were.
Now I think when a Lurker has something to say, we should take the time to involve them.
Guest Lurker: Do you have somewhere specific in mind?
