There was a thread a few weeks ago about some border morris dancing in Kettlewell and a strange oboe like instrument (rauschpfipe???) but I'm buggered if I can find it using the search.

Well anyway, I believe you can hear it (but not see it I'm afraid) on this video I took:

The original thread was 'morris dancing at Kettlewell', put up on 15th September by my wife, who then, as you can see, went and bought a rauschpfeife from the Early Music Shop in Saltaire. She can also be seen, but not heard, walking off down the road right at the end of the video.

The only interesting thing about the dance was the music - AND IT DIDN'T GET SHOWN!!

I could see the music perfectly well, Tim. Where were you looking?
:-P

I also found the dance interesting as well though. Not many Border Morris teams in upper Wharfedale. Certainly no others that perform the knocked to the ground and get back up again move. Very entertaining and a beautiful backdrop.

I suppose if you are only interested in music though nothing else will do but seeing how people play the instruments!

Cheers

Dave

Hello again. The clip is of the Powderkegs in Skipton..so it's not me at the end 'cos I saw them in Skipton so the Doctr is mistaken..unless of course he has another wife i know nothing about!!
Thanks for putting the clip up onto U tube and drawing my attention to it.So you fellow mudcatters can hear the wacky sound.I'm loving my rauschpfeife...great fun.

Bobcat....there are rumours about the docs other wives........

Looking forward to hearing the rauschpfeife....are you Front room folking on Saturday? and are you bringing the rauschpfeife?

Good to catch up with you at Ingleton.

What she means is she saw them in Kettlewell, so she is also mistaken. However, if that's not my wife in the clip she certainly looks worth following up. If mine can get a new rauschpfeife out of this what will it do for me?

Just to clarify one thing, the clip on YouTube is of us disturbing the peace in Kettlewell, desite the erroneous geographical attribution of the clip to Skipton.

So that might well indeed be the Doctor's wife, overpowered by my rauschpfeifing and heading for the Early Music Shop with credit card at the ready :)

We did dance in Skipton on the Sunday lunchtime, and some of the clips posted in the same batch are from there. We (Powderkegs) are actually based in Whaley Bridge in Derbyshire.

Oh dear, that's two things I've clarified.

Hi! Clearly too much sun!!
I'm loving my Rauschpfeife though i have somehow split the reed, now happily replaced. It causes quite a stir when i take it out and has been given some dubious nicknames!!> I'm walking at Whaley Bridge in the Peak district sometime in 2008...will let you know..also I shall be at Alsop-le dale the last weekend in March with the aforesaid instrument and a batch of musicians...look on Keepers Fold website for details!!!Maybe a duet if you are around? Start a new trend in the folk world?
