Subject: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour From: Ferrara Date: 19 Oct 07 - 01:17 PM Many of you have heard the music of Elizabeth LaPrelle, a very, very good young singer of Appalachian ballads and old time songs. She is on a 6-week tour right now in California, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. It's billed as a national tour of old-time, bluegrass, mountain gospel and flatfoot dancing, sponsored by the National Council for the Traditional Arts. Here's the list of performers. And here's the schedule of cities and dates. This is a great line-up of musicians from Southwest Virginia. A few people from Mudcat first heard Elizabeth LaPrelle sing in 2003, about a month before her 16th birthday. Her singing was magnificent then and it just gets better and better. She has a new CD out, will have it at the concert. It's good enough that Bill (D) listened to it straight through, twice. A high compliment :-) First concert is tonight, in La Jolla, CA. Sorry for the late notice, I just didn't think about posting it here. Rita F |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour From: Barry Finn Date: 19 Oct 07 - 01:49 PM Thanks Rita I always like to hear what Elizabeth is doing. She's my favorite singer, above all others. I remember hearing her at that 1st getaway she attended, she no sooner go out the 1st line of the song when the busy with all kinds of yacking went dead quite & it's been like that every time I've heard her & a nicer young person you'd never meet. I recommond that anyone within driving range of her go & hear her. She's bound to make your socks roll up & down like windo shades. And I suck at commplamenting singers. Barry |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour From: Ebbie Date: 19 Oct 07 - 02:00 PM I hope she's/they're planning another West Coast tour. It appears that Medford, Oregon, is as far north as they are touring. That's barely over the Oregon-California border. If they performed in Salem or Portland, Oregon, there are a number of people I'd give a heads up. Maybe Rapaire will see this? Hey, Rap, if you like Appalachian music at all, they will be well worth hearing. In future you will no doubt be saying, I heard her way back when... Rita, do you know if Elizabeth has met Hazel Dickens or Ginny Hawker? Could be a great CD! |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 Nov From: Leadfingers Date: 19 Oct 07 - 05:28 PM The question is , how long before they get her over here , the other sde of the pond ! I saw her at the Williamsborg Fest in May (or was it early June) and was well impressed ! |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 Nov From: Bill D Date: 19 Oct 07 - 06:32 PM For awhile, a video of some of the performers is on a local TV stations website at their first stop. It features Elizabeth on two songs...I assume it won't stay up long. see it here (a large file...broadband only) |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 Nov From: Kent Davis Date: 19 Oct 07 - 08:04 PM Ebbie, Elizabeth LaPrelle and Ginny Hawker do know one another. From her site on Old 97 Records: "After hearing me sing one time at Mt. Airy, Ginny Hawker suggested that I might want to attend Vocal Week at Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia on a youth scholarship. http://www.old97wrecords.com/elizabeth-laprelle/about.htm |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 Nov From: Bill D Date: 19 Oct 07 - 08:25 PM and Rita met & heard Elizabeth there several years ago. That meeting eventually led to the LaPrelles coming to the Getaway. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 Nov From: Linda Goodman Zebooker Date: 19 Oct 07 - 08:34 PM Elizabeth actually ran a workshop or workshops at Augusta this past summer. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 Nov From: Barry Finn Date: 19 Oct 07 - 10:36 PM I believe Ginny has/had taken Elizabeth under her wing & has studied with her. Rita, correct me if I'm wrong on this. Leadfingers, on her getting to cross the pond. I believe she's got at least 1 yr maybe 2 to go in college & she's a tough one to schedule with her being real serious about it. Barry |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 Nov From: Barry Finn Date: 19 Oct 07 - 10:37 PM I'm sorry, I think it was Shelia Kay Adams that Elizabeth studied with. Barry |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 From: Sorcha Date: 19 Oct 07 - 10:39 PM Well, I'd like to hear/see her, but she seems to be missing Wyoming in spite of the fact that the LaPrelle Dance Hall/Saloon is in Douglas (at least the last I knew it was still open) We can hope for another tour I guess. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 From: Ferrara Date: 20 Oct 07 - 11:06 AM Elizabeth had to take the semester off in order to make this tour. Ginny Hawker heard Elizabeth at Mt. Airy Fiddlers Convention, and told Elizabeth bout Augusta Heritage and Vocal Week. A year or two later, Ginny sponsored Elizabeth at Vocal Week. That's when Elizabeth took a week-long class with Sheila Kay Adams. Elizabeth had just won first place at Mt. Airy singing "Rain and Snow," and she sang it for Sheila Kay after her first day in class. The next day, Sheila Kay asked Elizabeth to sing it for the class, and asked Elizabeth to sing it as our contribution to the class showcase. Three Mudcatters (Lorraine, Karen K and I) were in the class which is how she got invited to our FSGW Getaway and met lots of Mudcatters. Elizabeth has kept in touch with both Ginny and Sheila Kay. Ginny invited her to sing in the West Virginia Folk Festval in 2004, among other things. Elizabeth has been square dancing, singing, going to fiddlers conventions, and otherwise involved with old time and traditional Appalachian music for years and years, I think she won her first ribbon for singing when she was 11 although I should go back and read her biography :-). But listening to Sheila Kay Adams gave her a much deeper understanding of the magic of the old ballads and the way they have been preserved in this country for so many years, and also introduced her to a lot of great songs. Well, I don't know if any Mudcatters can get to the Crooked Road concerts but it's a neat tour and she's in pretty good company, huh? She was in a workshop with Hazel Dickens at the National Folk Festival in Richmond (last year?), some of these opportunities are pretty exciting. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 From: Ferrara Date: 20 Oct 07 - 11:09 AM Help, somebody -- am I right about Elizabeth performing in a workshop with Hazel Dickens & others in Richmond? My memory is full of holes these days. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 Nov From: GUEST,Barry Date: 20 Oct 07 - 10:31 PM Rita, you said she's in pretty good company, I'd say it's the other way around, it's them that are in pretty good company. Barry |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 From: open mike Date: 21 Oct 07 - 12:38 AM i posted some links to music from this part of the country (crooked road)in the thread about a new christmas album that CAMSCO has out. what a "warble" she has! Is there a name for that vocal style with "lifts" or little yodels at the end of the note?she sure does it great! |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 Nov From: Barry Finn Date: 21 Oct 07 - 01:52 AM There is mike, it's an old mountain style but I haven't a clue what you call it. I believe it has something to do with positioning the lower jaw out beyond the upper while singing but seeing as I'm not sure maybe some one else can do a bit better & give you more. Barry |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle - western US tour 19 Oct-10 Nov From: Barry Finn Date: 21 Oct 07 - 01:54 AM Actually mike, I'd like to hear a better explanation & discription than what I was given about that too. Barry |
