Subject: sheet music req: Souling Song
From: Rosebrook
Date: 06 Nov 99 - 10:38 AM

I've been looking high and low on the Internet - anyone have a clue where I might find sheet music or ABC for this song? My daughter and I are playing flute duets for a Christmas lights open house (non-profit event)this season and I'd like to include this in our song list. If anyone knows where I can find this arranged for two voices that would be great, but if I can find only the melody, I'll figure something out for a harmony.

I love the song and I think it would go great in this setting - it's a state park flower garden on the coast, and we'll be playing in the guest house that they decorate like an old-fashioned Christmas. The gardens are decorated with over 200,000 lights, some in ocean animal themes like a jumping dolphin, a spouting whale, etc. Lots of visitors come out to see the lights. It's a local holiday tradition.

If anyone can help me locate this song, I'd sure be grateful. Thanks,

Rose

If you mean the PeterPaulandMary version, then it is copyrighted and you need to purchase it.

if you go to http://back.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/aidx/aidxS.html

Another digital Tradition

you will find gif's that can be printed of a version sung by the watersons and a round

The Peter Paul & Mary version may be copyrighted, but all they did was glue together two traditional (public domain) songs, and add a few words from another one. Click here for a recent discussion of the subject.

The two versions MMario mentions should do you nicely. I think that the music has been transcribed from the Watersons' recording, and whoever did it has accidentally incorporated the harmony part into the tune; (easily done) if you can separate them out, you should have a ready-made arrangement. If you would like, send me a message and I'll send you an image of the staff notation for the basic melody so you can fit them together.

Malcolm

Does anyone have ukulele chords for this song? Most of the ones I've seen are tabs for the guitar which will not help me. I'd love to learn to play this wonderful song in time for the holidays. Cheers! Lynn

Go to a page that has guitar chords. (A chord's a chord, although sometimes an inversion works better.)

GOOGLE

ukulele chord chart

Top left there are some on the page. Best to you.

There is at least one old thread with LOTS of discussion of this song. Judging by the title you are using, I'd assume that you are most familiar with the Peter, Paul and Mary recording.

If I remember those old Mudcat discussions correctly, PP&M may have drawn upon a couple of different old traditional songs to come up with their version. I believe there was also some question about whether the "soal cake" tradition was originally connected to Christmas/Yuletide or to some other seasonal celebration.

If you're cusious and have too much time on your hands, do a forum search, OR wait for Joe or a clone to add the customary list of "related threads" to the top of this page...

Thanks all, I see in a March 07 posting "Muttley" said he had chords for the song. If you're still out there Muttley, could you share them?

I appreciate the replies. I've figured out the opening riff and the Hey Ho bit on the uke for myself but could use some help with the main soal cake section.

Take care,
Lynn

Nice going, Joe. I didn't expect to see quite that MANY previous threads on this song, but now I realize that I shouldn't be surprised ~ I've stumbled across discussions of it many times...
