Subject: Req words on Juliana- Sea shanty
From: Barry Finn
Date: 19 Mar 97 - 11:56 AM

There are 2 Juliana's that I know of, this has a chours that goes "Juliana, Juliana where do you go ah ha my long gone Julie" . While surfing through the Schooner Man pages I found a reference to this shanty & they have the chours as "ah ha my London Julie" . They've quoted their sourse as the Polish tall ship the Zawisza Czarny, my source is from Mareck, an officer from the same ship. My problem is maybe after a couple drinks & singing and the difference in accents could I have mistaken London fo Long Gone. Does anyone know this rare gem. Thanks.

Thanks to you belter, I couldn't get to Pint's http but I did get to him & Hearts Of Gold, didn't learn much, except London Judies is on it. I'm not to sure we're talking about the same song, Liverpool Judies & London Judies are very famous Gals, they've been know to pull a sailor or even a ship homeward bound from halfway around the world. I don't think this London or Long Gone Julie. She would have been used at the capstan or windlass with it's call back (2x) of the 1 line resopnse "ah ha my long gone Julie" then at the end with the longer chorus, "julianna (2x) where do you go, ah ha my long gone Julie". Again thanks all & any helpis great.

Belter, I now think you had it right, I found another London Julie, although no tune. I'll be meeting up with Pint & Dale in June at Mystic, so I'll be finding out for sure then. Thanks again if you're still out there. Barry Finn

A search for Juliana gets two shanties, neither of which are the one I was thinking of;
Fare you well, Juliana, I know
Hurrah, my boys, we're ho-o-meward bound...

Just finished singing with William and Felicia over St. Patrick's Day in Seattle(William and I go back a long way). The song they sing on Hearts of Gold is also known as Julianna and they sing the chorus, Aha, me London Julies(rather than long gone), hence the confusion about the songs. I would guess it's the one you're looking for.

Marc B, Thanks for all, yup, that's it, the polish accent & drink were my cause & source of confusion. I did finally figure it out. Here's how I first it. I had a spot at the Fanuiel Hall Market Place to busk, in 1992, when the tall ships were in Boston, my partner fell out it in the last minute, the replacement, a fiddler/singer, who just happened on by the docks agreed to join in but had to sign on board the Zawisza Czarny (Polish Schooner). Anyway I was off on a sail before I knew it, then the head (Mareck Chercouskey sp?) of the cadets pulls out his concertina & started to play while shouting out orders (not even batting an eye), then he proceeded to sing Juliana. Now John Trowney pulls out a concertina & Simon Spaulding & a cadet each start in on fiddles, all playing Roller Bowler, now the crew joining in on the refrain, sails filling, water rushing by & all in the matter of minutes, & I don't know from Adam how this was unfolding, or who these people were, (when I did I was quite impressed) but I knew I was in Heaven, I got asked to join in the evening concert dockside & later the shantyman from the Shenandoah got us all onboard of that vessel & the singing/playing was mighty. If it weren't for my wife & kids I'd have run away from home. Barry

Hi, What a great forum this is.

We got our version of 'London Julies' from The UK shantyman, Shanty Jack. In his cassette notes he says that HE got it from the singing of a female Polish shanty singer, but, doesn't name her. Catchy little shanty! By the way our website has those and lots of other lyrics. http://members.aol.com/Pintndale/

Thanks William, the Polish sailor Jack got it from was Mareck Shakowsky (that's how it sounds, I know it's not how it's spelled), he was (maybe still is) in charge of the trainees/cadets aboard the schooner, Zawisza Czarny (the Black Knight, or close to it, a hero). He's where I got it from too, also got Roller Bowler from him with Jack supplying the harmony, but they were drinking Vodka & I myself was on the B&B, so things weren't in the best shape, I should say I wasn't in the best of forms. I sang it as Long Gone Julie until I found out my error. I see you'll be at Mystic, I'll see you there, along with Jerry Bryant (Harpo & Samuelsen), he says some real nice things about Pint & Dale, we'll be there as a trio, Finn & Haddie. See ya & thanks, Barry

We'll look forward to meeting you there Barry. I'll look found Shanty Jack's tape -- his source was NOT Marek Siurawski though. It was a woman singer Pete met in Sweden. Marek's group Stare Dzwony (the Old Bells) has a great tape out too. Can't understand most of it (even the English Shanties) but the singing is downright chilling and it all has wonderful spirit. I have that tape somewhere too. Time to get out the shovel and try to find it in the heap of tapes I've collected over the years.

Just had to revive this thread: a Liverpudllian friend living in Kuwait loaned me a Shanty Jack tape and Stormalong John tape ... some fascinating and very different (Liverpool) treatments of well known shanties! Compare to the Ancient Mariners for completely opposite treatments of "Let the Bulgine Run" and "The Girls of Old Maui."

Check them out!

Cheers,
Allahamdalla,
Brian
