Was just reading that 51 years ago today, Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer was first released - although it didn't become a hit until after Christmas!

Cheers

I hope so!   imagine being compelled to spend your life pulling a fat man in a red suit around the world......

Who was the original singer? my memory says Gene Autry? that song was very much part of my childhood.

Cheers

Gene Autry. We had the record when I was a child.
"Oh there was Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen, but do you recall the most famous reindeer of all?..."

JennieG: I would like to disagree, as 51 years ago would place the release in 1956. Rudolph in story form goes back to 1939.

If you are refering to the Gene Autry recording of Rudolph, various sites on the internet state it was recorded on June 27, 1949 in Hollywood and released September 01, 1949.

Perhaps in 1956 it was a cartoon or movie release or recorded by some other artist.
Don't think I will buy a birthday cake.

I was just going by what I read, I can't help it if folks don't give me the right information! *grin*

I have a copy of the sheet music - not the original, I bought it about 20 or so years ago - it would have a copyright date. When I have time I will dig it out. The words and dots are printed in green and while it looks very Christmassy it is difficult to read. Don't know whose bright idea that was.

Cheers
JennieG
