And some are still "processing" the event; I know that when I go to a "top of the mountain" workshop, it feels like I'm still there days later, as long as I don't try to talk about it. The "reports" won't matter much anyway; despite the considerable writing talents of many of the weekend's habitues, I'm pretty sure words don't really do it justice. So-- welcome back, Getaway crowd. The weather was fine, the workshops great, but in my case I wasn't able to do hardly any singing because of a cold, which was a downer for me. The Mummers play was a big hit - very nicely done. I'm sure you'll be hearing from others as they straggle in - I must get back to the fruits and nuts here at work. |

The music was amazing. The camp now has some wireless internet access from some places. The 2008 dates will be October 3-6, 2008. The 2009 dates will be October 2-5, 2009. Put it on your calendars. |

I enjoyed a bit of picking with him. > The starch that too often passed for food, miserly portions and 'wipe your own tables to boot', detracted from an otherwise good experience. It is a lovely setting, and the facilities are adequate, but I feel the kitchen could do a little better. Canned vegetables and fruit are way too 1950's, folks, and we know a bit more about nutrition in this century. Serving portions with an icecream scoop is frankly parsimonious. I'd be ashamed. On balance, Susette and I had a good time, and we'll be back I'm sure for the music and friends, but I might bring a picnic basket. cheers, chance |

We had a great time at the Getaway. Thanks, Charlie! I just checked in with my brother by phone and learned that our very creaky but exceedingly cute cat Lucy died in our absence at the age of well over 15, which rather takes the shine off the trip. She has been ailing for more than a year -- major surgery in September '06 for a big and very malignant mammary tumour -- and in her customary quiet way she shuffled off this mortal coil sometime between the cat-sitter's Saturday and Sunday visits. By now, the other house moggies -- Bill and Perdita -- must have noticed that she is no longer claiming space at the kibble dish. I see that Wincing Devil has posted a bunch of pix, some of them including me ... must look. |

I was suffering from the general crap of fall (not sure if it was a cold, or just allergies) so left about 1/2 through the Saturday concert, went home, went to bed). However, what I observed from when I was there was very good. I think this year the Mudcatters and FSGW folks are truly one. Friendships have matured and cross pollination has taken place. That in and of itself made it a good getaway. What was that 3 stringed instrument that Gordon Bok was playing in his mini-concert? My favorite song of the weekend was Dottie Hurlie's Moonlight Savings Time. Dottie do you have the lyrics/chords? Can you post them? Dragon was Awesome! Watch out! Unlike last year, I took very few (too busy having fun:>) The music and the fellowship was just as wonderful as ever. The food was even worse than last year. But the cabins are comfortable, the showers are good, and the setting is pretty. I do wish I had a picture of Joe Offer gracefully reclined on the couch in our cabin in a pin-up girl pose. The camera, fortunately, would not have captured the sound of his gentle snores when he dozed off in the middle of the joke he was telling. A few random impressions....Dan and Geeta's baby is just as beautiful as you might expect him to be, and seemed to take his first Getaway right in stride....Nancy King, the proud Grandma, did a song that I have got to learn "A Satisfied Mind"....wish I had a copy of LEJ's song notebook....he said he was rusty on Harmonica - which means he must be absolutely phenomenal when all the way up to speed....lots of good stuff at the concerts, but my absolute fave was Charlie Baum's "Pharoah"....Clairebear is a tiny little woman under 5'tall with a 10' ft tall voice....even if I didn't love him, I'd want to hug Kendell, just to get a chance to pet his coat....How Amos can possibly know that many songs and play and sing them so well is beyond me... Most important impression....The Getaway continues to be a weekend of musical empowerment and magic that is no more than a reflection of the love of music, generosity of spirit, and and vision of the people who are the FSGW. Having daylight (moonlight) savings time switch during the weekend complicated things a bit. I was required to come back straight to work this afternoon just to cover the telephones, since all the other underlings had to take off at 3pm. First thing I had to do was make 15 xerox copies for the Director, and it took me - I swear - five minutes to figure out how to make back-to-back stapled copies. I kept doing it wrong. So then I knew I was one shoe shy of a pair and I'd better not try anything more complicated than saying "Thank you" to people's RSVP's for a dinner on Friday. I was on the knife-edge of tearing up and helpless laughter all day. This Getaway was wonderful, memorable, and you absent people were toasted and very sharply missed, and referred to many times. The mudcatters and the locals had become one community. There were wonderful newcomers caught up in the excitement of discovering kindred songs and souls. I never felt more at home and more supported as a singer and as a person. Some highliughts: Amiel Schotz's storytelling, the chants and worksongs by Barry Finn and Ken Schatz, John Roberts' ability to be brilliant and joyful, Janie's Katrina song, Coleen Cleveland's growing repertoire, Penny Anderson's style, and a fellow named "Will" who was lured to the festival by Lucy Goldberg who met him while traveling here by train. I reunited with old friends and had the pleasure of meeting an internet penpal hot off the Omaha rez. The music went on and on -- I don't think I fell asleep before three AM any night. If I hadn't been scraped off the chair and carried home I'd still be there, singing to the memories. |

Women fawn over him anyhow - but when he was wearing that coat, none of the rest of us men got any attention at all. It's just not fair. I have to admit, it's a nice coat. After word got out, we men took to stroking it, too.... ....and a good time was had by all, but I really missed a number of wonderful people like Dani, KT, Ebbie, SINSULL, Susan A-R, and a few others. Hmmm. I guess it's mostly the women I notice... I got to the "humorous songs" workshop late, while Gordon Bok was reciting "Kendall and the Kitchen," a parody of "Peter Kagan and the Wind." I stopped Gordon later and told him my first impression was that it felt nice that Gordon Bok wrote doggerel, too. Gordon said it was written by SINSULL, and Jackie talked him into doing it. Today it's cold and wet and windy here in Maine (the weather, not the dog for a change) but who cares? We're still pretty high from all the weekend fun. (Sorry Ebbie). Highlights of the weekend for me? In no particular order - Kendall's performances at both the Saturday and Sunday night concerts, Gordon doing Captain Kendall and the Kitchen - sorry Mary, you missed it again, John Roberts doing Carrying Nelson Home at a very late night sing on Sunday night...... I'll think of more when my brain starts functioning again! I've put my pics of the weekend here. Sorry about the quality of some of them - it's a basic point and shoot. I haven't got any captions yet but will try and remedy that in time. Many thanks to the FSGW for giving us the opportunity to have so much fun (sorry Ebbie) and to meet so many lovely people. Gordon was beautiful, the voices all across the camp were fine, the jams were riproaring wunnerful. Kendall with half a voice tells a better story than most folks do with a voice and a half, and he brought the house down. He and Jacqui did a combination performance on "Phoebe Snow" which was a proper tear-jerker, I tell ya. One of the most beautiful sights during the Getaway, which really came home to me this time, is watching the flowering of people who have discovered they really can sing and they don't evaporate or something when doing so in public; they start shy and then bloom out and get stronger and stronger because they have an environment which makes it safe to do so. I will add to the pictures when I can. I have one in particular of the Bad Boys from the Maine Shore fighting over Jacqui which will perhaps become very valuable some day.... :D A |

I've been singing old songs and writing new ones for years, I sing at church and in a wonderful folk chorus, but it is still hard to go to a singaround and just sing out for myself. I'd love to experience that at the Getaway. Sinsull's song circles offer a similar atmosphere. Now if I can only take time away from setting up the greenhouse and potting up plants and spend it on relearning the songs I used to know... maeve |

I didn't need to worry, it was fantastic.I used to think people liked me because I can entertain, and this weekend I found out that it's not my performing they like, but a black leather coat! I'm not going to list all of the people I enjoyed, but I get to sleep with one of them. And that's as far as I go on that road! That cellar is wet and cold today, so I have to watch my tongue. I don't know how I gained 4 pounds on the food they served but I did.The "Bitch in the box" kept trying to take us where we didn't want to go, that is, into run down towns paved with foot deep pot holes.Come to find out, she was programmed for the shortest route, not the best route. By the way, Charlie Baum told me about a better route which we took. To Annapolis, across the bridge into Delaware and up to the Jersey turnpike instead of going back through Baltimore. Thanks again, Charlie. It was a great weekend. |

My favorite moments from the Getaway...a rousing rendition of Key to the Highway at the Saturday Night Peace Jam...Amos, in characteristic canvas hat, fleece boots, and beat-to-hell jeans, strolling through the grounds at twilight, grinning, with his Martin over his shoulder... Mr Schotz putting tears in my eyes with his Scots belly-button joke...Linda Goodman putting tears in my eyes with her ladle...being presented with my brand new Mustang...Carl's jazzy rendition of Georgia...Dick G's banjo lesson...the Temptress and her Concertina...Gordon's old Russian melodies...Wye...harmonizing with Lucy G on "Home Sings Me"...the Contra Band... |

I thoroughly enjoyed the "Strangers in a Strange Land" workshop, which I co-led with Severn (whose brainchild it was). Who would have thought that songs of cultural adjustment would include "Thomas the Rhymer?" But it absolutely qualified. Gordon Bok came and sang "In the Kind Land" for that workshop as well. It was delightful to see Kendall again, and the duet on "Phoebe Snow" was phenomenal. You could tell Kendall was right there with it. Kathy Westra's "A Place In My Heart" workshop - what I was able to get to of it - was also especially lovely. Sylvia Herold is one of my new favorite performers! Gordon's rendition of "Kendall and the Kitchen" has already been mentioned. It's the second time I've heard Gordon do that - with Kendall there, both times - but this time I have photographs of Kendall's reaction. Kendall, how much will you donate to the Mudcat or Getaway scholarship fund (your choice) for me not to post them? And of course, Kiran thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone, having Nanny Jaqcui change his diaper, and getting cuddled by everyone. He did, however, note that many of those who talked Big about cuddling him, seeing him, and changing nappies somehow found somewhere else to be this year. Harumph! We missed you. Gordon's workshop on the Kalmyk people and their music was fascinating, Chance threatening to smother a snoring Micca with a pillow at 7:30 AM, meeting Clairebear, Charlie Baum teleporting from place to place and Linda Goodman being everywhere at once making sure there was edible food in the retreat center at all times, and seeing all the wonderful people that I only get to see once or twice a year. Sitting with a table full of people all singing along with Amos when he did Vincent Black Lightning. You get the picture. Oh, and did I mention Kendall's coat? |
