Subject: Tune Req: "What can make a hippopotamus smile?"
From: GUEST,Ashleigh

This is a popular Girl Scouts song but so far I have only been able to find the lyrics. I did find one version online that was sung by an artist but the tune wasn't similar to what I remember hearing. Is anyone familiar with the melody?

Musical notation for WHAT CAN MAKE A HIPPOPOTAMUS SMILE—for one voice—can be seen in Sounds of Music: Teacher's Book, Part 3 by George Odam, Joan Arnold, Alison Ley (Cheltenham: Stanley Thornes, 1996), page 43; additional lyrics on page 136:

WHAT CAN MAKE A HIPPOPOTAMUS SMILE?
Words and music by Jack Miffleton, © 1971.

1. What can make a hippopotamus smile?
What can make him walk for more than a mile?
Not a party with paper hats
Or cake and candy that can make him fat.
That's not what hippos do.

CHORUS: They ooze in the gooze without any shoes.
They wade in the water 'til their lips turn blue,
And that's what make a hippopotamus smile.

2. What can make a hippopotamus smile?
What can make her walk for more than a mile?
Not a tune on a violin,
Or listening to the singing wind.
That's not what hippos do.

3. What can make a hippopotamus smile?
What can make him walk for more than a mile?
Not a zoom down a slippery slide,
Or going for a bicycle ride.
That's not what hippos do.
