Having become rather bulky I started part two here. Having just learned some more HTML I'll attempt to create a link back to part 1. Yet Another Blue Clicky Thingie that Joe fixed
If it worked fine, if not, will someone please clean the mess out of the litter box?

The news in Mick's post from Connie's e-mail is encouraging. The fact that he looked at Karen and held her hand AND the fact that he saw his Maw-in-Law there and obviously wondered "where in the H did she come from?" is a good sign.
Banjer, you are hereby ordered to attend remedial HTML school - click here

Night owl: be glad to help when I can. I live in central Missouri, so I'm not close, alas. I'm not a cardiologist or surgeon - I'm the medical director in a prison -what the military calls a "GMO," (general medical officer; like a battallion or squadron "surgeon")& I also used to do forensics (depressing work) but I'll do what I can.

You can pretty well bet your bottom dollar that there's almost always multiple valid ways to approach medical problems & multiple opinions & detail differences in the reccomendations of even the best, well trained, conscientious & ethical physicians, so the family will likely already be starting to get various options suggested; I don't want to inadvertantly give even more conflicting info from what the treating physicians are suggesting. And also, I'm not privy to the mass of details necessarily missing from our picture of the 'ol 'Spaw as a patient, 'n also I reckon he's at a big enough medical center that the guys & gals on his team probably know very well indeed what they're doin' 'n we don't want to confuse/increase stress on Karen 'n her mom by second guessing.

Having said that, if I can maybe explain some anatomic or medical concepts to help out, I'll be glad to. I don't have time to check here as often asI'd like, so be patient if I'm not responding real fast...

Anyway, I still think there might (hope there will!) come a time when we can flood the 'ol 'Spaw w/tons o' great folkish musical stuff, so he can tell us - like a music critic, ya know, what he thinks of our - no doubt very eclectic - tastes when he gets better.

Cheers, BK

I just did a little retrospective research because I wanted to know a little more about catspaw. Apart from finding out his age and where he lives (50, SE Ohio) this is all I could come up with. Kinda reminds me why we love him, don't it?

Cuilionn,

What do those two amazing words mean: "carnaptious" and "slee"? Whatever they are I'm sure I agree with you.

"Carryin' th' weicht o' th' wairld, pretendin' tae be carnaptious an' slee tae obscure yir auld saftie sel' belaw it a'..... Hmph" (Cuilionn, in Part 1 of this thread)) Helen

Sixties radical who forgot who he was for 25 years; looked in mirror one day and wondered what the hell happened...left Fortune 500 company to raise my kids and became a househusband, child advocate and foster parent, and, as full time as I can, luthier. We'd already been fostering for several years and adopted two boys. When I resigned, my letter stated that I didn't want my life or my sons' to wind up like a Harry Chapin song lyric. I'm sure they had no idea what I was talking about!

erica---Glad you passed that explanation on to Rick 'cause you look wonderful but, uh, yeah...........that's one of the screwier shots I've ever seen! Is the one on the left thinking or wiping drool from her mouth? The buzz cut in back...a guy or a Sinead wannabe? The girl to your left looks to be doing a nostril inspection of Paul Bunyan. And lemme' guess, the photographer is a student that wins the praise of every artsy-fartsy type within a 21 mile radius. What do I look like...LEJ old buddy, you say we all might eventually meet and so you refreshed this stupid thread. I avoided this turkey before and much as I love ya' there bro...I'm gonna' pass on it now.

OK catspaw if that's the way you want it. I'm gonna keep on picturing you with red hair and a red beard, probably freckles, perched on your front porch with the Computer sittin on top of the washin machine, you're wearin yer Mudcat t-shirt, overalls, and a big grin. You are tall and lanky, and I bet your wife teases you about yer paunch. You live on a ridge in the hills, and yer kids throw dirt clods at the neighbor's dog. You have a jacuzzi on the back porch, for some reason, and your old Takamine is leanin against the refrigerator, which contains a 12 pack of light beer and some turkey baloney which you like to eat right out of the package. You also would really enjoy a well-marbeled New York Strip, but your wife is against it.

As for me, I begin to wonder what brought this on. Was it an army of Tiple players, or did someone slip a Neil Young cd in the player while the cat was away? I am much relieved to hear that the news is improved. The cafe wouldn't be the same without those little paw tracks. Still praying though, just to keep things on the upswing.

I have been praying hard for Cats. I'm still having a hard time imagining him not being able to speak- I imagine he'll be making up for lost time in a few days. In the meantime, I am going to visualize sitting at breakfast with him, the waitress serving us up big plates of biscuits, country ham, red eye gravy, black coffee and all the other wonderful country cuisine that Karen and the Doctors will never let him eat again. But I've got a strong feeling that that old boy is feeling well enough by now to know he's damned hungry. Unfortunately it'll be jello ,chicken broth and ginger ale for a while. Anyway, maybe my intense visualization of that breakfast at Thelma's Cafe will get to him and alleviate some of those hunger pangs.

Astrally yours, LEJ

Sorry tae thraw ye...I kent Auld Catspaw professit a fondness for ma Braid Scots, sae I addit in a wee bit o' mair descriptive language. "Carnaptious" is summat like th' Amurrican derivative, "cantank..." er, "cantanker..." um, "cantanquerous..." BLAST! I canNAE spell in Amurrican!!! Onyway, it means aboot what ye'd expect it tae mean: gruff an' muckle feshin' tae drey...er, hard tae endure. "Slee" means aboot th' same as "pawky"...(Stop bein' sae obscure, lass!!!) er, summat claise tae th' Amurrican waird "sly", but wi' mair connotations.

It does help Night Owl, thanks from all of us. You know M'Cateers, modern medicine can really help. Almost two years ago my leaky aortic valve was not doing well, another valve started leaking and my heart was enlarging to try to compensate by working too hard. I started on oxygen therapy because my bod just wasn't getting enough (a lot of the oxygenated blood was leaking back into my heart instead of being pumped out into my body). The o2, along with modified exercise AND weight loss has helped tremendously. The last echocardiogram showed improvement. I have had allergic reactions to every drug they've tried for blood pressure and to help my heart. The last time this happened, I called the doc and told him I wasn't goiing to take it anymore, at all. My goal had been to be off all meds by summer, anyway.

The upshot of all this sharing with you is to let you know there is always hope, as there are so many alternatives. It is never an either or situation. There is always a third, and fourth, etc. Off the meds, stil on o2, but able to go without it for short times when running into the store or whatever, I AM doing MUCH better and my doctor and I fully expect me to be able to let the o2 go, during the daytime, by later this summer.

A lot of my success, I believe, also had to do with working through things on a spiritual level and learning to set boundaries on myself and on others I am involved with. I think it is safe to say that, like me and a lot of you, Catspaw has a "big" heart and wants to right all of the injustices of the world.

It's hard to admit that we cannot and is something I've been struggling with since this all happened. Hardest of all has been limiting myself and some family interaction; I've had to adopt a "protective mode" and learn to let some family members and friends go to learn on their own, for their own growth and because, finally, I had to admit to myself there was nothing left that I could do for them. I've also increased some family interaction, seeking out my dear sister, bet, even more than ever, 'cause positive is the kinda gal she is! Also, if I wanted to be an old woman and continue to wear purple I had to start caring for myself more.

Today, I can clean the house; run errands, in and out of the car; work on writing or jewlery; and still have some energy at the end of the day. Even 4-5 months ago, I was still having a hard time going up the stairs, just doing the dishes, or taking the dog outside. Things continue to improve for me and I know they can for dear 'Spaw.

Now, I know a large part of why I've continued to heal so much, in just the past few months, is ALSO because of you all here at the 'Cat. It has literally saved my sanity and life to be able to be on here and to find such wonderful friends. The meds I was on made me feel like a 90something cripple, which in turn depressed me. There were many days when about all I could do was sit at the computer and try to communicate with everyone who had shown me such outright love and concern. I thank you for that from the bottom of my healthier and improving heart.

Please know that what we all do here, for 'Spaw and each other, isvital and does have a tremendously positive effect. As ever, thanks for leting me ramble. 'Spaw, there's more healing for ya right here, whenever you are ready and able.

Love you all,

katlaughing

Cuilionn,

Thanks for the translation. It's close to what I thought you meant, and I agree with you.

katL

You can start wearing purple any old time you choose to - I've been wearing it all my life.

Helen

Warning

by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple

With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves

And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.

I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired

And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells

And run my stick along the public railings

And make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain

And pick the flowers in other people's gardens

And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat

And eat three pounds of sausages at a go

Or only bread and pickle for a week

And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry

And pay our rent and not swear in the street

And set a good example for the children.

We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practise a little now?

So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised

When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Now Katlaf, I'm not sure Cats would appreciate being called "Master of the Sheepfold", knowing about you folks in Wyoming and your widespread reputation for holding sheep in, shall we say, "High Regard." As the sheep rancher outside Buffalo, Wyoming, said " since the wife left me, it's been hard to go on, but where there's wool, there's a way." NOI(much)

where men are men and sheep are nervous!!! Love it. Reminds me. I bought a galvanized pail the other day. A woman ask me if I was going to milk cows or billy goats. I told her my cow ran away (I am obviously a city boy) and my Billy didn't take kindyly to being milked.

So sorry to see that catspaw is poorly, though I am not sure what it has to do with sheep. Did I miss something? Somehow I was sure that those of us in Wales had the monopoly on sheep jokes, there being three sheep to every head of population. Jim and I keep ours handy in the bathroom, but I believe the modern fashion is to keep them by the freezer. I have noticed that my messages have ended the threads I was following. Did I commit an unforgivable breach of etiquette, or was I just too woolly................... Hwyl. Y'all.

LLANFAIR, The sheep is a classic example of what is known here as "thread creep". It has taken on an air of 'Spaws presence, incorparating some humor to an otherwise tense situation. Enjoy it, and like the rest of us, look forward to "Spaws return and then watch all hell break loose.

Tucker, I know little of the Billys likes or dislikes, but perhaps if you scratch him behind the ears and get to know him, he may let you!

Hi friends,

Here is the latest. Looks like good news.

Mick,

Talked to Karen as soon as I got up this a.m. Good news. Her long time ICU nurse and friend fly in from GA yesterday. Assessed the information. Walked into Pat's cubical and softly declared to him that he's going to be ok. They changed meds. for BP and arythmias. As to what begat what--who knows...but the news is his BP and arrythmia has stablized. He asked K as soon as he came out if she went to graduation. SO we're glad that he is not only conscious but also oriented to time, place, and event. I am gratful to GOD.

O.k. Time for church. Then we'll go up to see K and work out some plans.

More Later ~Connie

GOOD NEWS.....Still keep praying or worshiping each in your own way...I think it's working!!

Catspaw,
It's true that an apple a day keeps the doctor away....IF your aim is good and you throw hard.
A cat may have nine lives, but let's not push things. I miss you, sir. Not only because you often respond to my postings, although I appreciate that, but for the things you say and the way you say them.
It seemed ironic that you would have a catscan -- just don't let them declaw you -- that razor sharp wit is a rare quality.
OK, now quit faking and get home.

Well, Catspaw, news of your rally is good news indeed. May you continue to heal. A group of 7 or 8 Mudcatters were standing around this afternoon in the middle of a forest in Northern Virginia (in real life!) and realizing that we didn't get to meet you in person when you didn't come to Washington, DC a couple of months ago for Rick Fielding's concert. And we're all hoping and praying that you get well enough quick enough that we do get a chance to meet you in person in those Virginia woods, or in "Our Nation's Capital" nearby, as soon as you're up to it. Godbless...

To all our dear friends, I am so overwhelmed by all your love and prayers. I can't describe how wonderful it was to come home to all your beautiful messages. I am honored to be considered part of your family. Pat was much better today. His blood pressure is stable, his heart rate has stabilized to around 72bpm, and they are weaning him from the vent. He spends part of the time breathing on his own and then they give him some assistance to avoid tiring him. For the first time today he became alert enough to start asking questions. Pat had no memory of the days leading up to being hospitalized and I filled in the blanks for him. As you can imagine he is a little irritated about not being able to put in his two cents worth, but when the vent comes out tomorrow he'll have plenty to say. His sense of humor is shining through as well as touch of sarcasm. It's amazing what he can do with a pair of brown eyes. I went to media play and bought a portable cd player and two cds from a very meager selection of folk music. I think it would be wonderful if he could hear some of your music and have wanted to ask for a couple of days. I fell in love with Pat the first time we met and within a few days we knew we were going to be together for the rest of our lives. He was the person I did not believe existed and he caught me by surprise. He is a gentle loving soul and the center of my life. There is so much more that I want to say, but my mind seems to be hampered by lack of sleep and the fact that Tristan is behind me throwing up. Ah...Home Sweet Home

Love to everyone, Karen

P.S. Big Mick...Thank you so much for everything you've done

The good news is certainly welcome! Still, we have to remember there's a long way yet to go... He's out of the quicksand, by still in the jungle, so our support can still be very important, and may remain so for a long time...

It's amazing how events change your perceptions and priorities. We had a small disaster here, and the room filled with my computers and instruments got flooded. We pulled out the computers and instruments, and as soon as I could, got a computer set up again & checked the mudcat for any news. Prior to this, I would've waited until tomorrow or the next day to set the computer up.

Prior to 'Spaw's emergency, I probably would have been obsessed by the possibility of harm to my precious guitars and other personal possessions, but this puts it all in perspective.

Cheers, BK

Karen,

Now you have done it. I work years to craft the image of a big tough old mick, and you set me tears when I have company in the house. It will be all over West Michigan tomorrow.

Your description of your love for our 'Spaw was wonderful, and now is recorded for posterity. My children will be reading it and hopefully passing it on. We do indeed love you and we are all part of a family that cares. Your husband touched us, sometimes in a difficult way, and we miss him. Sometimes things happen in a funny way. Because of our beloved 'Spaw's illness, we have come to know you, the boys and Wayne and Connie. We are blessed by this. Take care of that man, we will be here for you, and if anything has to be done, don't forget to ask.

Mick

Been tied up in a Sea Revels show & with getting ready for the NEFFA festival that just passed I haven't been around much lately. I saw the post about Catspaw's illness but at 2:30 pm responding would've shorted circuited what little hardware there was left in me. Now I check back in & he's on the mend, that's so great. I've been trying to put a tape of sea stuff together for Joe, I'll make a copy so now both you & Joe can be sick. Sandy's CD will will revieve you Catspaw but there'll be no help for Joe. Don't let Sandy get you thinking it's no big deal, he & Caroline have been passing music on for near half a century so they don't realize that they've been doing big deals for so many for so long, they wouldn't recognize doing a small favor any more than they'd give thought to breathing it's so 2nd nature for them. Give me a couple more days to get up a tape. I except no responsibility for the effect that listening to the tape will have on your future health, I'm only hoping that for the immeditate future the music on this tape will drive you to running outdoors & help with a speedy recovery. Best wishes, Barry

Well, I did have that one in mind, plus maybe a couple of others. Seemed appropriate. If the ol' Catspaw found 'em too romantic for his rebellious spirit, he could give 'em to his wonderful mother-in-law! I fell in love upon reading her first message to us all. With Karen and her mother surrounding him with love, and all our thoughts and prayers heading his way, we'll soon be enjoying his contributions again. Dear Mr. Patterson,

We at the Neil Young Center for the Terminnaly Screwed were quite concerned to hear of your illness. Over the years, you have been one of our most important supporters. Your patient referrals and your financial contributions have been a major boost to our efforts in assisting the unfortunate victims of TS.

These contributions have made possible the completion just last month of our Rick James wing, housing the Funk Rehabilitation Department and our Groupie Halfway House. We are also pleased to report some other exciting news. A new department is being created, to be placed under the direction of Mr. Young himself: The Catspaw Clinic for Falsetto Vocal Reconstruction, in your honor, sir. Yes, Neil thought you would be pleased.

In closing, we are all wishing you a speedy recovery. Because of our strict policy of anonymity in regard to our clients, we cannot mention any names, but several patients who frequent the Mudcat Cafe cyber site are extremely agitated about your illness. In fact, if we had not physically restrained him as well as doubling his meds,Banjer would probably be at your side right now.

Wishing you the best,

Cletus Dumont

But I also was thinkin' (scary, I know!) about the extra expenses he and Karen must be having what with being away from home and all and it occured to me another thing we might all think about sending is prepaid telephone cards. Not that we'd all expect a phone call from His Mightiness or anythin'. Just to help in a little way with whatever they need. There must be others they keep in touch with who are not "permanently attached to 'pewters" like us and, when he does get ready for a laptop, maybe that would help with that, too. Just a thought.

Catspaw update, I told Pat that since he couldn't hang around you catters, I was taking his place. I think he is going through mudcat withdrawal. He asked me what I thought of you guys and I really couldn't find the words to tell him what you have given me this week. Pat was sitting up twice today, his O2 is at 97-100%, and all vitals are good. He and the doc decided one more day on the vent would allow him to be even stronger so tomorrow should be the day. I spent the day by his side and we both did some napping. I also spent a lot of time making to-do lists. I never do the things on the list, I just make the list. I'm not worried about the little things, they'll all fall into line. My focus is to give our catspaw the best I have to give and bring him home healthy and happy. All equipment at the hospital has to be approved through engineering before use. I waited two days and when Rachel(wonderful nurse) found it had not been approved she called them. They told her it was an illegal piece of equipment and could not be approved. I decided to break the rules and she decided she didn't see a thing and Catspaw got his music. I will remember forever the love and prayers you have sent our way. I will be home every night now to visit and bring you continued good news. forever close to my heart, "K"atspaw

Kick litter, 'spaw!

Yahoo! Hooray! WheeHah!

I'm only online at work, and I come in every morning with a sense of dread about logging onto the mudcat. I'm so glad the news is good!

What with the music, and the illegal equipment, and Paw 'n' Cletus, and Reg, Reg, 'n' Reg, and all us mudcatters out here, and a terrific family by his bedside, "The Concerned One" has to realize that 'Spaw is far more necessary here on earth than he is in heaven.

Hi

I know it's probably here somewhere but I'm really rushed this morning, (gotta get to the studio and finish this damn album) and i just don't have time to look. Has anyone got the hospital address. I want to send paw a couple of things. I'll ask heather to check this during the day for any info. Thanks "cats".

Karen,

Thanks for the updates. The Mudcat is one of my first priorities when I get home from work, and since Pat's illness, it has become a higher priority.

I haven't met Catspaw, but I have dearly loved his contribution to this Forum. I have grown to care about him and was real sorry you all couldn't make it to DC for Rick's concert. That was the only disappointment for the entire evening.

I am glad to hear that the news has all been uphill since 'Spaws crash. I guess he never completed high school biology or he would have known it is safer to dissect frogs than aneuryisms.

I do hope he goes "over the edge" in his recovery!

Love,

RiB

Well, jest like Willie, we's on the road again, cept we's a lot cleaner now and so is the pickyup since Paw didn't believe thet flatlander about them miles an' miles o' water an' decided he's agonna find out fer hisself. Them folks was right helpful, apickin' us out the water an' all. Got the truck most near dried out too. Only trace left is thet little minner that swims around in the water in the dash. He goes from the 10 to the 80 in the speedometer back and forth. Some police feller tole Paw thet in order to keep aheadin' in the right direction he needs to keep the sun on his right side, problem is he tole him thet in the mornin', come about one o'clock paw makes a goldern u-turn so's he can keep the sun on his right like he was tole. Lucky fer us he don't drive near as fast after noon so's I reckon we make about 10 miles a day in the right direction....Cain't tell thet ole man nuthin nohow.....Ya'll tell Catspaw to hang in there, help's a commin'....Soon as it gets to be my turn ta drive I'll make some goldurn headway, you wait'n see...Contrary old fart...grumble....grumble....

thanks for the update Karen, and for the good news. It seems that old 'Paw has cornered the market in wonerful women, he even gets a great nurse! Perhaps I'll have to move to the US. By the way, since no-one else has asked, now he's a bit stroger, can you talk to the vet about getting him "fixed". I'm having to use a computer at work as the smell still lingers on my official Mudcat machine!

Seriously though, I think what we have learned about what a wonderful family you all are over the last week or so has ruined his reputation forever. Just hope he doesn't have a relapse trying to spray in the corner long distance to try and restore it!

Best wishes to you all and especially to Pat for a continuing and speedy recovery.

More good news everyone....THE VENT IS HISTORY The thing came out and he has been talking ever since. Our teenager wanted to know if we could keep a spare at home to shut him up. Tired of parental lectures I guess. The aneurysm is stable. His lungs are improving. I asked the pulmonary specialist for specifics and we were dealing with bronchitis/emphysema exacerbated by congestive heart failure(or maybe the other way around). Its hard to tell which came first. So then the aorta says, "Look what I can do"! He is doing great and the doctor said he will be home soon. AMAZING!!! I asked him he had a message for everyone...he said no, but watch out, I saw the wheels turning. I think he wants to deliver message himself. I just realized I am falling asleep at the computer. Would like to keep going, but am very tired. Got home and my teenager jumped out at me from behind the van. I thought they'd have to put me in the hosp, or the kid which I started throwing things at. I don't think taco bell and donuts for dinner are very heart healthy, do you?

All your prayers, energy and love worked wonders.

deliriously yours, Katspaw

A little recipe for Catspaw. Culled, with great regard for authenticity, from a Scottish cookbook called "Tried Favourites Cookery Book" by Mrs. E.W. Kirk. In its twenty-third and enlarged edition, after sales of six hundred and forty six thousand. This book I bought from a second hand bookstall, and it had never been used. Possibly never been read. It has twenty-four recipes for various scones, oven or girdle (griddle).

Before I get to the scone recipe, let me quote some more gems from the work (which, by the way, has 6 American recipes, corn bread, corn pone, breakfast muffins, griddle cakes, popovers and crullers. No grits. It also makes prolific use of odd patent foods, such as Plasmon powder (?), and has antique advertisements for surviving and lost products. Some of them belong to that part of the British cuisine which, in 'spaw's words, belong in the garbage bin.

Hough and Macaroni: This is recommended to those thrifty wives who like to make a piece of meat go as far as is consistent with nutritious feeding.

Shape of cold fish and potatoes.

Bomb-Shell (From an old soldier of 1820) This is steak cooked in a scone dough in a cloth. "Very appetising and economical."

Remains of hare.

To dress a lamb's head and pluck. (take out the eyes - it won't see you through the week, but what the heck!)

Half-pay pudding - "without exaggeration, it may be said that this pudding is equal in nutriment to 1 and a half pounds beef steak."

Hygienic pudding

Restorative Meat Jelly

Artificial Asses' Milk

Sir W. Gull's cough prescription

Buchanan's Prune Paste (Invaluable in the home)

Apple Jam that will keep for years

Matrimony Jam

Scones: I lb flour, 2 oz butter 2 oz sugar (if made for tea) half oz cream of tartar, quarter oz bicarbonate of soda, half pint milk or (preferably) buttermilk. (be careful about milk quantities - I think American pints are a little different).

Rub fat into flour, add cream of tartar (and sugar, if using). Dissolve soda in milk, and mix with flour to a stiff dough. Roll out about an inch thick, cut into the needed size, and bake in a moderate oven about 15 minutes, or on a girdle. Serve hot.

On the subject of pronouncing scones, there was an editor of a pronouncing dictionary interviewed the other week who singled out this word for comment. " In the north, they usually say sconns, but scones (to rhyme with stones) when they want to sound posh. In the south, they usually say (this one defeats me, but is halfway between scones and scawns) but sconns when they want to sound posh."

However they're said, if the doctors permit, enjoy!

Penny, I suppose after the "fat" is rubbed into the flour, there was no need to wear the "girdle" any more,...but wouldn't it catch fire in the oven???(

OK, now, recipes to build up Catspaw's health (or at least to give him something to chew on).

This is from my collection of my mom's old cookbooks. The Kitchen Guide, American, no date found in it, but old and falling apart:

Lenten Loaf (mostly rice and canned salmon)

Little Pigs in Blankets or Oyster Bundles (24 large oysters wrapped in 24 pieces of bacon)

Fried Frog's Legs (hindquarters only)

Liver Dumplings (Skin 1/2 pound of calf's liver and remove every paticle of tough fibre. Chicken liver may be used instead of calf's liver, as well as heart and tender parts of gizzard. Cook bread and water to a paste. Add seasonings, egg, and finely chopped liver. Form into balls and cook in hot soup. Very nutritious.) (!!!)

Turtle Soup (Wash the turtle, cut the skin loose from under the shell, skin legs and neck and remove all fat, save the liver. ..... it doesn't say what to do with the liver after you 'save' it. Any suggestions, catspaw?)

City Chickens - for six (2 pork tenderloins, equal amount veal steak, cracker crumbs, 2 cups hot water, 1 cup rich milk, 1 or 2 beaten eggs. Cut meat in one and a half inch squares, alternate pieces on wooden skewers until 6 are used. Roll each chicken (?!) in seasoned eggs and crumbs. Allow to stand for 2 hours to harden. Then, brown well on all sides in skillet, remove chicken (!), place in roaster, put hot water in the spider, rinse well, and pour in roaster. Cover and bake slowly 2 hours. Make gravy with milk and season well.).... it doesn't say if it tastes like chicken.

Oh, and Karen, I forgot to add these tips from the "Household Hints" section of the Kitchen Guide (pre-plastic era).

Kitchen Garbage Can, One of the most convenient new appliances for the kitchen is the kitchen garbage can. You merely step on the pedal, and the lid flies up automatically.

House cleaning, Irritation to the hands as a result of using naphtha for cleaning can be avoided if first you rub and work a little vinegar well into the skin.

and....

How to take Unpleasant Medicine
When the medicine is particularly unpleasant to take, hold a piece of ice in the mouth for two minutes before taking. It will not taste nearly so bad.

katspaw, wish I could send you takeout meals, but Ohio is a bit far from Vermont. Alison, I am NOT going to use you for a consultant (smile) Seriously, if you do want soome relatively healthy recipes that actually taste good, I can send em along. As for me, I get done cooking vegetarian food and head for the Chinese takeout around the corner and get pork fried rice. Ah me, the secrets of a chef of vegetarian food, but not persuasion.

Glad to hear about the continued progress. I just smile when I think of what will flow from that keyboard once those paws get back on the keys.

Hey Catspaw, I reckon you'll be eating the same stuff that got ya this far in life and more power to ya. 10 years ago when I thought I had a heart attack a dietican was dispatched to give me a life plan. Her idea of a "snack" was one cup of popcorn. I had to set her off, my spirit needing amend. I told her" o'course ya mean un-popped, quarter stick of butter, one and a half teaspoons of popcorn salt popped in three or four tablespoons of Veggie oil. ( Can't help it folk's, it is damn good). Indignant, she said " No, one cup of air popped, non salted, non buttered popcorn." I told her I would rather die. Maybe not good advice Catspaw, and please don't follow it, but it was fun to watch her face when I told her that.

Just talked with Karen and she asked that I get on the line and let you know that Pat is off the vent and they have actually had him from bed to chair and back and are talking about taking him out of ICU as soon as tomorrow. This can only be the result of the good thoughts and prayers that his mudcatters have sent his way through Cyberspace. Pat had written a whole page that he wanted posted to you but Karen had configure problems at the computer tonight and couldn't get on the net. Karen is very tired and the fact that she couldn't get on the net was sort of the last straw in a long and frantic week.

I am flying back up for the weekend and will check tomorrow and if Pat is able, I will take my laptop to him so that he can get back to mudcatting. Of course, he will have to get back to the PC really fast because when I let loose of the laptop, I tend to go into withdrawal in a real hurry (like in about 30 seconds).

Thanks again for giving us such comfort. maw or known to spaw as Clarence. (I'm sure he willl be happy to explain that one to you)

Don't worry about the popcorn, Tuck, as I am saving the boy a seat at Thelma's with all the non-fat biscuits, low- cal gravy, fat-free ham and decaffeinated coffee he can handle. If he behaves himself, I will have Thelma make her special Eggbeaters omelet for him. If he's really good I will have Thelma show him her butterfly tattoo, but then again he's probably not ready for that yet.
