Subject: Beverley Banjo Frenzy!
From: Paco Rabanne
Date: 22 Nov 07 - 03:14 AM

Hola ladies,
What's happened in Beverley? I recently bought a banjo, built for me by the very lovely Eric Beharrell. He's also recently built one for Ged, and now I hear that young Graham from the wednesday Tiger session has also ordered one from him!
Oombanjo's banjo free jazz quartet were practising in the big room of The Tiger last night as well, so the place was full of them!
In light of all this I propose:
1) That we don't all congregate in the same Pub for fear of attack.
2) we should form our own secret society/tune session.
3) we should have a monthly Bob Dylan night in alternate tunings.

All this banjo talk...and relatively just down the road......

I've been so sad, lonely and abused up here in North Yorks, can I join the support group?

Paul

PS Banjos welcome...nay encouraged at Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club for sessions anytime and we have some banjo driven main acts come the spring. Also check out this young guy who we have playing in one of the support acts in May:
Dan Walsh . The track "No More" with Kathryn Davidson is stunning!

@ ThreeSheds: You `d probably need a whole weekend for that Leonard-Cohen-idea...playing just one song doesn`t meet the definition of a session...

If Bill Sables sold you a banjo, it's ok.
He's my friend and colleague and knows his stuff.
I'll be happy to reinforce his opinion on an instrument - it will be fine,

Actualy, Bill didn't sell us the banjo.
It was one he would have bought, but his cash was tied up for visiting New Zealand. He thought someone ought to get the benefit of it, so passed it our direction. It's a class banjo and deserves a home where it will be played and loved.

And Les in Chorlton - It would sound as sweet, it is called Paragon.
Quack!
Geoff.

You all should have been at KFFC. over the weekend we would have turned the three of us "a Pluck" into a "K.F.C. finger lick'n pluck'n chuck'n weekend". El Teddybearo, isn't it about time you got a full size Banjo with the extra string. Let the Banjo's ring. cheers Oombanjo.

Hola John,
Five string? Is there such a thing? I thought four string were the true path! Anyway if you want to hear it fired in anger, me and Three Sheds are going to Monks Walk session tomorrow.

Hell, I've been fighting it but I'm just going to have to get my banjo out of the attic where it's been for the last 30-odd years while I've been concentrating on guitar and cittern. It's a very nice Lund 5-string, made in the 1920s but, unfortunately, it's now got a neck like a banana. Do any of you gents (or ladies) know of a good repairer in the East/North Yorks region who could fix it?

Many thanks for that, Paco. Ironically, I was living in Hornsea when I first bought the banjo, over 40 years ago, from the widow of a former dance band player who also lived in Hornsea. Small world!

Last night young Shedlet came out with the news he's been hankering after a banjo for some time.
We are now distraught parents, gone are his teenage ambitions to be a rock god ( and therefore our chance of him buying us a bungalow)I suppose I shall just have to be stoic but the thought of him day and night wearing a John Deere Rounders cap is just too much!

I've been insulted by the best, derided by the worst
I've been abused relentlessly
But I just love this plinky plonky sound
So I'm moving to Tennessee, yes Lord I'm leaving for Tennessee

Chorus

So smile along with me,
I've got me banjo I me knee
All this fuss & bother
Must be 5th string jealousy

From "5th String Jealousy" by, um....me!

You simply can't have too many banjos in the house!

Anyone know who those banjo players were sat in the food tent at Beverley Festival this year at around 2 in the morning (Friday or Saturday, can't remember which)? One of them very kindly let me have a go on his rather nice (maple?) five string.
