Subject: Lyr Add: PLUMBERS AND JINERS (Watt Nicoll) From: GUEST,Jim I Date: 24 Nov 07 - 12:22 PM I'm not sure this is exactly as written but it's how I've been singing it for the past 30 odd years or so. THE PLUMBERS AND THE JOINERS (Watt Nicoll) Long time ago and never forgot A public toilet was a penny in the slot Its 5p now and that price goes For a wee or a fart or to powder your nose. Chorus: How they tittered, how they chaffed How the plumbers and the joiners laughed When they saw that young girl jammed Like a plug, in the sea, of a lavat'ry pan Dum, dum a-dimmy dumma dimmy dum dum.... Ba...oom. When Nan saw the door was open wide She wasted no time and she nipped inside. Squeezed and pressed as hard as could be She did her best, 'coz it was free Well Nan sat there for an hour or two Did all the things that ladies do. The seat was varnished, just her luck, Like gum tae her bum, the seat wiz stuck. Well they called for the plumbers and the joiners too The plumbers plumbed and the joiners screwed, They bust the flush, Nan gave a gasp As water started rising up around her knees. (Slowly and sadly) A large crowd gaithered as they cairried her by Face doon on a stretcher wi' her erse tae the sky "I've never seen the likes," one woman exclaimed "I have " said her husband but it's never been framed |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Plumbers & Jiners From: GUEST,Jim I Date: 25 Nov 07 - 04:36 PM "According to Nigel Gatherer's Traditional Music Pages the title is actually PLUMBERS AND JINERS." Mea Culpa! (Latin for 'Jings! Ah'm awfy sorry, Jimmy!" NB: Reading Watt's discography on Nigel's site I note with interest, (and purely for completeness), that on 'Watt a Night' the song is listed as written by Watt himself but on '5,227,706 Scotsmen Can't Be Wrong!' in 1971, it is given as 'Trad: arr Nicholl. |

Tom here are the words: GRANNY'S ARMCHAIR VERSE 1 My Grandmother, she at the age of eighty-three One day, in May, was taken ill an' died After she was dead, the will, of course, was read By a lawyer, as we all stood by her side VERSE 2 To my brother, it was found She had left a hundred pound To the same unto my Sister, I declare But when he came to me The lawyer said I see She has left to you her old armchair VERSE 3 How they pittered, how they laughed How my Brother an' my Sister too When they heard the lawyer declare Granny only left to me Her old armchair VERSE 4 I thought it hardly fair Said I didn't care An' in the evenin' took the chair away My Brother at me laughed An' he said, it will come useful, John Someday, when you settle down in life An' find you a girl to be your wife VERSE 5 You find it very handy, I declare On a cold and winter night When the fire is burnin' bright You can set, in your old armchair VERSE 6 What the lawyer said, was true For in a year or two Strange to say I settled down in married life At first, a girl did court And then the ring I bought Took her to the church an' made her my wife VERSE 7 Now the dear girl an' me Are as happy as can by And when my work was over Each night I stay at home An' be seated in my ole armchair VERSE 8 One night the chair fell down When I picked it up I found The seat had fallen out, upon the floor An' there before my eyes I saw to my surprise A lot of notes, ten thousand pounds or more VERSE 9 When my Brother heerd of this The poor feller, I confess Went nearly wild with rage an' tore his hair But I only laughed at him Jim, don't you wish you had the old armchair VERSE 10 No more they pitered, no more they laughed No more my brother an' sister laughed When they heard the lawyer declare Granny only left to me Her old armchair |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Plumbers and Jiners [joiners] (W Nicoll) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 22 Jan 21 - 11:25 AM The tune is not there, and if you don't know Granny's armchair, that's not much help either. The chords were posted in 2008, and I'd agree that they are correct. As for notes (in same key!): B B BD'...., C' C' E'...., D' D'D' D'B GA B A A...., B B D'B... C' C' E'..., D' D'D' D'B GA BG A G. (Sorry, I don't do proper ABC! The tune is the same for both verse and chorus. Could write it out in standard notation, no bother!) |
