Here is a prediction! Look out for the fiddle duo of Matt Quinn & Tom Moore. If they can achieve what they have already as teenagers, they are surely going to be huge names on the folk scene. Their performance on Thursday at the Royal Oak in Lewes was quite stunning. (There is a picture on them in full flight on Thursday at http://froots.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4307 )

Next Thursday also sees the Royal Oak presenting very talented young performers:-

Apl 16th * £5.00 * HAZEL AND EMILY ASKEW
These sisters are two of the finest young performers on the scene. Fiddle and melodeon duets and lovely singing

On another thread, Valmai Goodyear wrote:-

Emily and Hazel Askew were excellent at the Royal Oak in Lewes last night.

And Mike Ainscough replied:-

Indeed they were.

I can only add that the whole evening gave me a total buzz. Lovely performance from the guests, super enthusiastic and responsive audience and some great and varied floor spots. (And Valmai and Mike were amongst them!)

Next Thursday should also be thoroughly enjoyable with.....

Apl 23rd * £5.00 * CHRIS FOSTER
One of the finest singers and most thoughtful inventive guitar accompanists of English folk songs. A rare chance to catch him on tour from his new home in Iceland.

Thanks to Chris Foster for another outstanding performance last night. Looking forward to next week, please note that we have been forced to change the advertised appearance by THE PALINKA BAND who have beeb forced to cancel because of ill - health. Instead, we will be having one of our very rare Open Nights

April 30th OPEN NIGHT - FREE ADMISSION

This night was originally advertised as an evening with the exciting new Hungarian band, The Palinka Band. However, one of their members has become seriously ill and has returned to Hungary and the band have been forced to cancel the appearance. As we have not been able to come up with a replacement that would be even a vaguely suitable replacement for a vibrant young Eastern European female quartet, we have decided to hold one of our occasional free admission Open Nights and give the many performers who support our venture more of a chance to sing and play that they very limited opportunities that they get on our guest nights.

Also we would love to see performers and listeners at our monthly tune and song session in the bar of the Royal Oak this coming Sunday - all welcome.

Station Street, Lewes
Song & Tune Session
The Last Sunday of the month - 3.30-5.30

The second of our monthly Sunday afternoon song and tune sessions at the Royal Oak. All are welcome to come along and join in, play, sing or just listen. The intention is that singers and musicians should get an equal part in the proceedings.
Please forward this message to anyone that you think would be interested.
best wishes
Vic & Tina

What terrific support we had for one of our very occasional Open Nights yesterday. Looking at the number of performers that were turning up, I decided to operate without an interval last night, and by limiting each act to two items each, we just managed to fit everyone in by five past eleven. Thanks to the huge number of supporters who can along last night and to the performers for the exceptionally high standard of their spots in a wide variety of styles.

Next Thursday, we start our Irish Season which lasts for the whole of May. Firstly, with a man whose songs have been the subject of two recent threads on Mudcat - "The Miltown Cockroach" and "King Lear".

May 7th * £5.00 * CON FADA Ó DRISCEOIL *** Irish Season ***
One of Ireland's foremost comic song writers in the traditional style in recent decades and a very fine button accordion player

Oliver, originally from County Monaghan, is a much respected singer of mainly Irish traditional songs, most in English and a few in Irish Gaelic. Tonight he is joined by a very fine uillean piper.

Now come on, Valmai, there's no need for you to join the ranks of Mudcat users who seek deliberately to misinterpret previous postings.

Wow! What a wonderful evening last night from Oliver and Brendon. Oliver has been at the club many times over the years, so we knew just what a special singer he is. But the uillean piping of Brendan was a revelation. What a wonderful player he is and such a magnificent tone from his set of pipes. he was given a rapturous reception. Thanks very much to both for a really excellent evening. The last of May season of Irish nights is next Thursday:-

I know that I keep saying this, but it's true! We had a really great night last night with Duck Soup. They were on great form. I had said in the publicity that you would see some instruments that you would not expect to hear in a folk club and that was certainly true. If you would like to see photos of Adam playing three of them, then click here.

Next week we are privileged to be able to present a group that counts as one of its membersTom Paley, one of the icons of the folk revival on both sides of the Atlantic. -

A huge thank you to Leon Rosselson and Robb Johnson for a magnificent, stimulating and life-affirming concert lat night. This was played to an enthusiastic capacity crowd who were a mixture of our club regulars and those who had come to see The Liberty Tree event as part of the Tom Paine and Lewes festival.

Next Thursday should be huge as well with the visit of the world's leading female Cajun band - THE MAGNOLIA SISTERS from Eunice in Louisiana making their first ever European tour. Have a look at their tour schedule at http://www.magnoliasisters.com/Mag_tour_europe.jpg and you will see that their appearance at the Royal Oak in Lewes next Thursday is their only appearance in a small intimate venue; all the others are at large concert halls or big festivals:-

July 16th * £7.00 * THE MAGNOLIA SISTERS
An amazing coup for us as we present the leading female Cajun band from Louisiana - Ann Savoy, Jane Vidrine, Anya Burgess, and Lisa Reed.

Here is a brief review of a performance by The Magnolia Sisters on their current debut UK tour, written by Des Bowring:-

Oh my goodness I've just seen the Magnolia Sisters in Bristol and they are bloody fantastic!

Everything you expect from a Cajun band was here - fine and swinging playing that had that strange elusive edge of joy and sadness - the fiddle and accordion and keening vocals were pure joy to listen or dance to. Such likable musicians who immediately established a rapport with the audience - what more could you want?

Please see this band on tour - they are delightful. One of the gigs of the year.

You can see them on Thursday at the Royal Oak in Lewes.

Surely one of our best nights ever!

The Magnolia Sisters were magnificent last night and once again the "House Full" notices had to go up fairly early on. Those who did manage to get in were treated to a really outstanding performance by this vibrant quartet. The reception that they were given was tremendous.

Jeannie Harris had driven down from East Anglia to Sussex just to see them and she gave a beautiful treatment of the two songs that she offered us.

We have more top American visitors next week with the visit of Ralph Bodington and Jerry Epstein -

July 23rd * £6.00 * JERRY EPSTEIN & RALPH BODINGTON
Jerry has been involved in traditional music for 40 years and was director of the New York Eisteddfod. Ralph is a superb performer of banjo tunes and ballads from the old-time Southern mountain culture.

For an extended sample of what each of them sounds like, go to the following websites -

Once again, we have to point out that the wrong telephone contact number is given.....

Once again, I will be emailing them to thank them for the entry but asking if in future they can give the correct phone number. It should be 01273 478124

Next Sunday afternoon, we have our monthly song and tune session in the bar of the Royal Oak. This runs from 3.30 to 5.30pm. Come earlier to have one of the pub's excellent Sunday roasts - 2 for £10.

For the last two months our substantial body of local enthusiastic singers and musicians have been joined by excellent singers from outside our area. In May it was Marion Button and in June it was The Claque.

We had a great evening on Thursday with the entertainment provided by Jerry Epstein and Ralph Bodington and for Ralph it was his first ever performance outside the USA. It was difficult to work out who was more enthusiastic, Ralph for the British folk club format or the audience for his powerful deep singing and outstanding banjo playing.

We have the last night of our eleven month season next Thursday when we have a free admission Grand End-of-Season Open Night.

We take the month of August off then we are back on September 3rd with The Copper Family opening a very strong autumn programme.

Sept 3rd * £6.00 * THE COPPER FAMILY
Jon, Jill and John and some of their children will be on hand as we welcome one of the regular visits from England's leading traditional singing family.

I wonder if they are breaking the Trade Descriptions Act! In the Rock & Pop section of The Guide in today's "The Guardian", it has the following entry:-

* THE COPPER FAMILY & FRIENDS Traditional Folk Clan Royal Oak, High Street, Lewes. 8pm £6.00

Some comments on the above:-

>> I wonder what Jon, Jill and John and their offspring will say on Thursday when I tell tham that they are a "Rock & Pop" act.
>> The Royal Oak in Lewes is not in the High Street, it is in Station Street and the postcode is BN7 2DA
>> I haven't given the contact phone number that they give because - once again - The Guardian has got it wrong. Every time they give our listing which is quite frequently, I contact them to thank them for the listing but to point out that the the phone number is not correct and then the next listing appears with the same wrong number. I'd hate to be the poor person (in Plumpton from the look of the number) who must be getting a lot of enquiries.

...and it was! Thanks Vic, how you and Tina keep this up I haven't a clue - ah, yes! hard work and dedication to something you love, that would do it. If you've never been to The Royal Oak, it's a remarkable folk club - do try it if you're down Lewes way, in fact, make a diversion.

Thanks very much for that really kind comment, Jon.... and to take up Jon's theme, the family gave us a really wonderful evening to start our new season singing to a capacity crowd.

By limiting floor spots to one item each, we managed to put on eleven of the many performers who turned up to support us - but there were at least eleven more who didn't get a chance to go on.

I've put up a photo of the seven singing Coppers taken last night on the Facebook page of the Royal Oak Lewes and as the evening evoked so much of the memory of Bob Copper, I've also put up one of the last occasion that Bob was with us, which was the evening when we celebrated his 89th birthday in January 2004. (I think you have to be a "friend" of the Royal Oak Lewes to see them - but you are welcome to apply....)

Next Thursday promises another fine evening with Pete Coe:-

Sept 10th * £6.00 * PETE COE
One of the top names on the scene. A fine singer and multi-instrumentalist. He will even stepdance as he plays!
