Another great night on Thursday with an appreciative audience enjoyed a committed and thoughtful performance by Maggie Holland.

This was helped by some truly outstanding floor spots the included:-

* Bob Walser the professional American singer and melodeon player came to us straight from Heathrow airport en route for Aberdeen and was really brilliant

* Robb Johnson one of Britain's leading songwriters was on fine form as well and Maggie had him join her for a duo version of his fine song Overnight as an encore

* Marilyn Bennett lead singer with The Other Band was singing like an angel.

* Will Duke(concertina), Derrick Hughes(Northumbrian pipes and whistle) and Ian Chisholm(guitar) who played some fine sets of tunes together.

Who knows - there may be more to follow. People haven't come home from work on Friday yet! Interestingly, three were also asking for more details of a song that had been sung one of the resident singers - so we must be doing something right!

What a start to 2009! The Sultans of Squeeze gave it everything last night combining humour, outstanding musicianship, lovely singing and an interesting and hugely varied repetoire.... and a lovely appreciative capacity crowd.

Stop me if you have heard this one before, but..... we have just heard from that people who were organising his British tour that they have failed to get a British entry visa for Bajaly Suso even although they had managed to obtain a British Work Permit, so his advertised appearance on September 11th will have to be cancelled.

On Thursday 24th, we have an unusual and exciting night to present at The Royal Oak.

TERRY MASTERSON and CHRIS LITTLEDALE will be giving us a brilliantly devised show called "TRANSPORTS OF DELIGHT" with the songs, poems, readings and sounds of the things that move us about.

This will be the last guest evening of another very successful eleven month season - our nineteenth since moving to The Royal Oak. Nice to the club room looking so full last night for such an excellent performance by THE NEW DEAL STRING BAND. It was particularly pleasing to see TOM PALEY on such good form; amazing singing and playing of fiddle, banjo, guitar, harmonica and autoharp from a man who is only a month shy of his 80th birthday!

Next Thursday, 31st January, we shall be presenting the first appearance in Lewes of THE BOAT BAND. They send this message:-

After playing for many years, trawling the venues of Britain and beyond, THE BOAT BAND have picked up a huge and varied catch of tunes: Creole, Caribbean, gospel, Cajun, Irish, zydeco and blues-not much slips through the net.If it can be played on accordion and fiddle (or trombone, washboard, trumpet, banjo etc), if it touches the heart and moves the feet, it`s in the repertoire.

Our latest venture takes the band away from the cajun twosteps of South Louisiana to the dance music of northwest England, drawing on the rich tradition of some thousands of tunes collected by and from the musicians of Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria. Our favourite current source of good tunes is the Langdale fiddler William Irwin. and The Boat Band have released a CD called "A TRIP TO THE LAKES" featuring these tunes.

Come along to this gig and enjoy the English tunes and songs nestling in alongside the already eclectic offerings, whether it's at an all out ceilidh, a strictly cajun dance or a sit-down concert. The line-up is based on: Kate Barfield (fiddle, trombone, vocals), Greg Stephens (guitar, banjo, vocals), Tony Weatherall (accordions, vocals), plus occasional special guests.

Next Thursday 24th January, we move on with Europe's finest Old Timey music band, THE NEW DEAL STRING BAND
The New Deal String Band was formed in 1966 by Tom Paley and Joe Locker, two banjo-and-guitar playing ex New Yorkers living in London. The band was active for many years with various fiddle players and then went into hibernation until the 1990's when Tom's son Ben took up the fiddler's slot.
Tom, who has been playing guitar and banjo since the 1940's, was a founder member of the New Lost City Ramblers. Both Tom and Joe have graced the UK scene with their authentic Old Timey music for many years

THE TITANIC SYNCOPATORS with PETA WEBB
The star of the Titanic Syncopators is Peta Webb, one of greatest and most versatile singers of classic old songs in the UK. Her numerous solo projects, duet collaborations and memberships of innovative groups and bands (in various genres) have resulted in many published recordings and albums.

With the Titanic Syncopators Peta sings a range of distinctive songs from the 1920s and 30s, selected for their striking melodies and evocative lyrics, most of which are well known and loved, though we have found some less frequently performed items which our audiences enjoy. Among others we like the music of Fats Waller, the Gershwins, and Walter Donaldson, and people say we "sound authentic like old records" (which we take as a compliment); but we are not deliberately trying to imitate other bands. What we do is what we do.

And should you have missed John Kirkpatrick, and live within hailing distance of Guildford, he will be Carolling with his Crumpets on December 14th at the Music Institute club. However, there were only 7 tickets left on last mention at close of play at the club last night, so you'll have to get your skates on (how's that for a seasonal allusion?). A big thank you.....

to everyone who turned up and joined in with an outstanding evening with Carolling & Crumpets last Thursday and particularly to John Kirkpatrick for giving such a magnificent performance.



And apologies to.....

all those of you who could not get in after the HOUSE FULL signs went up early on and to the 20 or so performers who did not get a chance to do a floor spot because we were so inundated. Perhaps I could remind them (and anyone else who would like to perform) that we have one of our very occasional Open Nights with free admission next Thursday 6th December.


And our next big night.....

will be on Thurs. 13th December when we will be presenting ANDY IRVINE. Come early to be sure that you get in. Doors open at 7.30pm. There is a track of Andy singing and a video clip of him performing at the club's Myspace site.
