........or rather a traditional do reinstated!

The Shady Oak at Tiverton near Chester is restored after a 2 year absence & will occur every last Friday of the month.

Musicians, siners etc welcome!

The siners should liven things up a bit!

Once again, it's a session I'd like to join, but is probably not close to the R train from Brooklyn.

Mr Happy:

Is the 'last Friday of the month' set in stone?
It clashes with the Dusty Miller at Wrenbury and their catchment area overlaps quite considerably.

No hope of it being the 3rd Friday instead is there?

Just what I thought Marilyn. We are the same distance from both, and we used to go to the Shady before it shut, but we go to the Dusty Miller now.

Don't kno if its set in stone, I'm not the organiser.

Just checked out The Dusty Miller, looks like that sesh is a moveable feast as well!

January Acoustic Folk Night

Yes we are having two nights this month, the first one on Friday 4th at 8.30pm. Hope you all can make it, blow away the January blues!

p.s. 'though I agree the 3rd Fri would be better as there's nowt else on.

The 1st, 2nd & 4th Fri's are taken, although it's a little hazy on the 'last Friday' as sometimes it could be the 4th or 5th!

1st Fri has 2 events we attend fairly regularly:

Folk Ahoy at the West Cheshire Sailing Club, New Brighton

+

Glan Yr Afon, Dolphin, near Holywell

2nd Fri: Carlton Session, Handbridge, Chester

The regular monthly session at the Dusty Miller is always going to be the last Friday of the month - it's not a moveable feast.
It is a feast too - Mark feeds us well!

The extra session on 4th is a birthday bash (birthday with an 0 on the end I believe) it's not the regular session.

So is it the last Fri or the 4th Fri?

The Dusty Miller will always be the last Friday whether there are 4 or 5.
Last Friday was the 5th Friday in November and that was the Dusty Miller session night.

I'm in a little group that rehearses on a Friday night but we all love the Dusty Miller sessions so we re-arrange our rehearsals so we won't miss it.

I only discovered the Shady Oak sessions just before the pub closed (was new to folk music at the time and had only just started going to sessions - Mo the Caller introduced us to it all!). It was an enjoyable session and I don't like to think it's starting up again and I won't be able to go (selfish or what!!).

If you have any influence with the organiser Mr Happy please see if they might consider the 3rd Friday of the month :-)

You're a star!

There are quite a few of us who would probably like to go to both but who will go to the Dusty if they clash and that would be a shame.

Have found that the organiser of The Shady sesh also does the sesh at Glan Yr Afon, 1st Fri of month.

Me & the Fiends are off there tomorrow night, so I'll have a chat with him.

This is a little confusing as there is a town in Devon called Tiverton. Any chance of changing the title to Tiverton, Chester or Cheshire?

Barbara

BB,

If you read the whole thread, there's no confusion.

My initial thread didn't include Tiverton in the title just UK - guess an elf modified it.

Some relevant recent news about the new management at the Shady, here:

The history behind the Shady Oak sessions.
Mike Penney and myself were the original hosts for the Shady Oak sessions. We commenced back in the year 2000. The idea behind the sessions were for us locals to have somewhere to go without having to travel too far. Unfortunately when Glen and Lynne our amazing and supportive landlords left for sunnier climes the sessions finished.
I for one am delighted that they are back on and most of the old regulars have returned. December's session was brilliant and we locals look forward to the Shady Oak being returned to its

Was at the Shady last week - seems the organiser can't change the frequency - something to do with the pub management.

We're thinking of trying the Dusty sesh in Feb, just for a change.

Do many go there & what sorts've instruments?

It's usually a fairly big session at the Dusty Miller with a mix of instruments. There's usually a couple of piano accordions and 3 or 4 melodeons (usually only 1 at a time!), 2 or 3 concertinas, 3 or 4 fiddles, a guitar or two (rarely more than one), a cuatro amusingly called 'Suzy', several sizes of recorders and whistles, flute, cornamuse, octave fiddle, a couple of dulcimers and a bowed psaltery. I don't *think* I've forgotten anything.

There are several singers (but more tunes than songs on an average night).

The type of music varies from Playford tunes to Red Rose Cafe, some Irish trad., some Welsh, Scottish, some Morris tunes. I would say that most is trad. but not all.

The crowd is mainly the Shroppie Fly contingent so, if you're familiar with that session ...

It's a good session and the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.

There is a big table reserved for musicians but it can be crowded early on until we intimidate the diners into leaving.

Need confirmation when the February do at the Dusty Miller is on.

Is it the 4th Friday, 22nd or the last Friday, the 29th?
