Subject: Tom Bliss on YouTube From: GUEST, TB Date: 09 Dec 07 - 02:36 PM 9 clips, all shot at Swaledale Outdoor Centre / Richmond Folk Club last weekend. Stories and songs; sad, funny or just plain unusual, some unaccompainied, some with guitar, mandocello, Scullion dulcimer and duet concertina. No Trad I'm afraid - did do some but there were problems with the recording. Thanks for reading - any comments, positive or negative, welcomed Tom The Violin Spirit of Ecstasy The Mighty Montagu Herm / Sark Dance Branscombe Bay / The Naopil Gentle Maids Ashore others in the box on the right ('More From: therealtombliss') |

Subject: RE: Tom Bliss on YouTube From: Peace Date: 09 Dec 07 - 03:31 PM Damn. Here I have been writing deathless prose and having the Mudcat screen disappear WITH the dp every time I clicked into Youtube. So, once again. Hello, Tom. In "The Violin", the guitar and voice are great. Love the sound (that's abbreviated that from 1762 words that said essentially the same thing but that disappeared when I clicked outta Youtube). In "Spirit of Ecstasy", (pardon my ignorance) what is the instrument called and how is it tuned from bass to treble?--if you'd be so kind. I am now in "The Mighty Montagu" and having a good time listening. I find it difficult to see you getting any negative comments. In fact, allow me to be the first to compliment your replication of what I think is an English accent. Good on ya, old top. I'm gonna get to the rest as the day goes on. Thank you for posting the links, Tom. You're a good man on a stage. Best to you. BM |
Subject: RE: Tom Bliss on YouTube From: Peace Date: 09 Dec 07 - 03:34 PM OK. So now I'm listening to "Herm / Sark Dance". WHAT'S THAT NOW? Jaysus. How many instruments do you play? |
Subject: RE: Tom Bliss on YouTube From: GUEST, TB Date: 09 Dec 07 - 05:10 PM That's a mandocello on Spirit - a David Oddy as used by Show of Hands. But I tune that one ADGC, so it's more like a guitar than a mandolin. Herm is a long-necked dulicimer, made by Hugh Scullion. Tuned like a Mountain Dulcimer, DADD, with diatonic frets, but upside down so the low string is struck first in the strum, as opposed to last. How many instruments? Well like most folkies a good few, to various standards. I think the most ever I used in one gig was 12, but that was for a bet! Thanks for the comments Tom |
Subject: RE: Tom Bliss on YouTube From: Backwoodsman Date: 10 Dec 07 - 07:14 AM GUEST TB - Hugh calls his dulcimer-type instrument 'The Strummer', and it's fast becoming a very popular instrument in his native Lincolnshire. |
Subject: RE: Tom Bliss on YouTube From: GUEST, TB Date: 10 Dec 07 - 07:27 AM LOL I know what Hugh calls it. But 'Strummer's not self-explanatory on a CD sleeve, for example - it could mean anything, plus it's not very romantic. With Hugh's permission (he made mine for me), I always refer to it as a Scullion Dulcimer when I haven't got space to give him a proper name-check. I urge him to use his name, as other luthiers do, because it's better for business :-) Tom |
Subject: RE: Tom Bliss on YouTube From: closet-folkie Date: 10 Dec 07 - 10:20 AM Excellent, Tom--I really enjoyed the listen; the mandocello sounds sublime. All the best then, Steve R. |
