Subject: What guitar should I buy
From: Ian Stephenson

I've been playing guitar for about 8 years now, and I'm wanting to become a proffesional folk accompanyist on the folk circuit. Its my 18th birthday coming up next time (March), and I'm getting money from relatives etc. and I thought I'm definately getting a new guitar with the money -choosing a good guitar is definately not a thing to rush! I've been playing a Norman B20 folk for the last year and three quarters, and it hasn't let me down yet, but it hasn't got the deep, bass end sound that I wan't. I want to spend about £800 on it so I want to make sure its the right one for me. For the amount of money I should be able to get a good hand made guitar. Does anyone know of any excellent guitar makers that I might be interested in? Cheers mudcatters, Ian Stephenson

Most guitarists use Peter's Placebo when buying a guitar.

You will remember, that is....

"An ounce of image is worth a pound of performance"

So I've got me this fancy birds eye maple job.
Others will have a Martin or whatever brand is popular within their group or generation. Maybe a Taylor of a Gibson or even an Ovation (especially those models with pretty leaves on them and weird little sound holes)

Bert.

Ian,

You are in luck! At the Mudcat there are many things we are short on (brains, good ideas, etc.), but we are never short on opinions, especially opinions about guitars. Below you will find a list of threads on this topic. The first two or so are about "what to buy." The rest are long diatribes on various makes of guitar posted by those who have actually played them. There is lots of good advice. I give you three important concepts that you will also find on these threads. One, consider a used guitar. Two, go to music stores (as many different ones as you can) and play as many guitars as they will allow you to play both above and below your price range. Trying a wide price range helps you to learn what your money ought to buy. Three, if your store doesn't "set up" your guitar, save out about 60 - 70 US dollars to have a luthier "set up" your guitar. It is worth the money.

Lastly, I apologize for our tendency to focus on guitars commonly sold in the US. There are other good makers, we just don't always hear about them or get to play their products.

Hi Ian, Regarless of brands and kinds that recieve all the high priced hype, consider looking into hand built guitars. That means looking in your own neck of the woods. Do some web searching and find whats out there. The best thing you have going for you is patience, shopping for a guitar is worse than shopping for a car. The bottom line on any guitar is that it has to agree with your size, sound and feel. Most folks and they mean well will tell you they play brand X and you should play brandX. If you have a favorite "look up to" performer, you might let him influence your brand decision.Just keep in mind that ALL dogs don't bark alike, guitars have different voices as well. Some players can voice guitars better than others. You'll find that hand crafted guitars are not much different in price than those high priced US factory guitars like Martin, Taylor, Gibson and Guild. I believe Lowden is back making guitars in Ireland. The British Isles should have plenty of custom guitar shops. The down side is that sometimes you have to order your guitar and thats difficult and usually requires a long time waiting.Good luck in the hunt.... Mudjack

A number of English fingerpickers of the 70s-present had guitars that didn't look like they were American made. Stefan Grossman had a lot to do with these musicians and he has his own discussion group called "the woodshed". Here is his website. Click on "Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop" and then on "the new woodshed". You ask if anyone knows what kind of guitar John Renbourn, John James, Ton Van Bergeyk, etc. play. I suspect that will give you the name of some European builders.

Also you can ask for opinions on the newsgroup

rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic

They are mostly Americans; but there are Europeans; and a number of luthiers participate in the NG.

Murray

Hello, there is a terrific guitar maker in the South of Germany who at present supplies a significant part of the professional German Celtic Scene with stringed instruments. I would reckon him being one of the absolute finest guitar and bouzouki makers in Europe!

Here's his address:

Heiner Dreizehnter Herbrazhofen 1 88299 Leutkirch Germany 0049-7561-71980

Good luck Josie
