My pub landlord has bought his daughter a guitar for Christmas. Just the guitar. I've given him an old set of tuning pipes and chord shapes for C so she can get started. Boxing day he wants me to round and teach her a tune. any ideas for a simple to teach a child. I believe that he thinks I'm better than I am. Help me out folks.

GIOK! CELLAR! And don't step on Seamus' tail.

Van,
Maybe you should ask the young lady what song she would like to learn or give her a few to choose from. Then brace yourself for three hours of Puff The Magic Dragon. LOL

Let us know how it goes,
Mary

Or the Unicorn Song....but yes, just ask her what she'd like to learn.

Is this girlchild the first student you've had, Van?

I was learning on my sister's baritone uke at that age. Some of the songs we did were ones we still sing: Desert Silvery Blue, Grandfather's Clock, The Seine, Polly Wolly Doodle, Hush-a-bye, Froggy went a courtin'. There are more listed in this old thread. That thread also has a link to Kadittles (sp) which is ALL kids' songs.

Have fun!

Get a book on how to play folk guitar and go through it with her. It will have a logical progression of lessons and will give her something to refer to between lessons.

Why did you start with C? The C chords are difficult. I asked my guitar teacher why I had such a hard time with C, and he said, 'You're not supposed to play C on the guitar.'

Better yet, tell the landlord you would love to help but are unqualified to work with someone so young. You worry that you might strain her delicate hands and arms. It would be true.
