I expect there will be one.
It is a bit of a funny time of year, with people away or busy doing family things so keep the thread active for a while, or they mat miss it.
Quack!

Just so you know, a thread will stay visible on the list for 24 hours from the most recent posting.
If it drops off the bottom of the list you can find it again by clicking on the "refresh" button, but selecting the "3 Days" (or more) option.
If you add a posting it will go back to the top of the list, but there is not much point doing so until the time spot when it is due to disappear.
You could try asking people who frequent pubs involved in the folk festival or folk club scene, The Nook or Stamps(is it?).
Quack!

Mind you, ask the wrong person at the Nook, and you might just end with a motorbike...
Quack!

Asking the right person...hmmm...sounds tricky ! I can at least tell the difference between a guitar & a motorbike (the latter is too heavy to pick up...) so I should be ok..

There's someone I know in Penistone. I'll PM his wife and see if he's teaching or knows someone.

Have a look at the Registry of Guitar Tutors. My son found his current teacher through it. A quick look comes up with two in Holmfirth which is a good starting point.

Thanks both to Julie & Nick - Julie, I'd be very interested if you get a reply from your friend & Nick, your link was great, I'll investigate it further; an initial check for Holmfirth found electric, not acoustic teachers - forgot to mention in my initial post it's the latter I'm after. However, I can widen my search quite a bit, so I'll see what I come up with.
Thanks again,
Phil.

There is a fair chance that teachers know other teachers though. I only looked at Holmfirth. My son travels about 10 miles from where we are - you can't always guarantee on the doorstep :)

I think you'll find the quality would be decent.

You might also try the organisers of the Holmfirth folk festival (or the other one) who might know of people - May 11-13 HOLMFIRTH FOLK FESTIVAL, W Yorks.

I think there is a local regular Holnfirth thing - this could be it - Holmfirth

Good luck

If Barnsley isn't too far from you - you could try Utopia Music - they have a room upstairs that they use for teaching.

Sarah :)

You could ask at the folk club that may still be held in the ?Ludd Arms pub. There are a couple of people local to the area there who may be able to put you in touch with someone, if the club is still going. I'm sorry but I don't remember the name of the village it's in.

Of course, I may be wrong in remembering the name of the pub too... I'm like that.

If you mean the General Luud folk club Liz, alas it is no more. It was at the Wheel Inn in Golcar. It finished in November with the Inimitable Les Barker! Try local music shops such as 'Octave above' in Kirkheaton or if it's not too far 'The music room' in Cleckheaton(You could check out their website and get in touch through the internet.) There is also 'Eagle music' in Netherton ( I think)
Ned.

If you go to the next Holmfirth Farmers Market (3rd sunday), and buy a bacon butty or cup of tea, them there will be able to help. James Meadows' dad regularly is on it and he will be able to point you in the right direction.

Try contacting the Music Room Cleckheaton:

The Music Room St.John's Works St. John's Place Cleckheaton BD19 3RR Tel +44 (0) 1274 879768

I'm sure they'll be able to recommend someone. A couple of friends of mine have a busy teaching schedule (and teaching in Sheffield area which may be too far) but may be interested - I'll contact them if you wish.

Good Luck
Jim

Thanks for keeping the suggestions coming, I really appreciate it !
I like the idea of the Farmers Market - I'll try that when it's next on. I might also venture to Cleckheaton, although I'm not familiar with it at all - I moved to Holmfirth two years ago, from Sheffield, so I'm still finding my way around. That does mean, Jim, that a teacher in Sheffield could be fine - I still work in Sheffield & would be interested in knowing whereabouts your friends are - if they have any availability for a new pupil, perhaps you could let me know ?
Incidentally, Ned mentioned Eagle Music- I popped in there on Saturday & was really impressed with them- their suggestion was to post a thread here.....seems to have been a top tip !
Sorry for the long post,
Phil.

Hi again Phil
My guitar-teacher friend lives in Stocksbridge - you can catch him performing every Wednesday night at the Castle Inn, Bolsterstone. He is an amazing player and has excellent references as a guitar teacher. His name is Dave Friskney. If you have no luck there, try the Rivelin Folk Club, Rivelin Hotel, Tofts Lane, Stannington, where you can contact Adrian Kerr - again on Wednesday evenings.
If you have no luck get back to me here (PM me) - I'm thinking of taking up guitar teaching myself - though you'd have to accept my DIY/No dots approach to Play-in-a-Day the By'ear Way...!
Good Luck
Jim

Just a thought, hang around the local music shop, pretending to buy, watch for people buying guitar strings.
Follow them home & stake out the house, if lots of people come & go carrying guitar cases, possibly every 1/2 our or so, then ask one of them!

I would go down to the Open Mic session at Number 11 on Upperbridge where you will find guitar players ranging in age from about 14 - 60+ and I'm sure someone there will be willing and able to point you in the right direction. It starts at 8.30 but you need to be there early doors as it's only a small room and soon gets full. The next session is Thursday January 10th.
To follow a couple of the suggesstions already made - I doubt Sheila at the Nook will be able to suggest anything other than what has already been mentioned here and I wouldn't hold out much hope at the TIC. I would echo the suggestions of the Music Room in Cleck and Eagle Music at Netherton.
There'll be some workshops at the next folk festival (May 9th - 11th) but I can't tell you exactly who or what at this early stage.
Good Luck
Cath

Thanks to Jim (again!) & Cath,
Jim - I will pop over to Bolsterstone sometime & see if I can track Dave down & I'm really grateful that you came back to me with his details.
Cath - Amazing to find out about Number 11, when it's so close !! Thanks again for the tip !
To everyone who replied - from Geoff for his almost immediate response, to Cath about No. 11, I'm just so grateful for all the contacts, I'll now spend some time following them up - I've certainly got enough ideas & tips to work on, so my next post may be how well I got on & that may take a while...
Eagle Music (mentioned in Caths post) suggested I post on here & I've been delighted by all the help I've received - thank you mudcatters !
All the best,
Phil.
