Subject: Anyone hear of a song called 'Breathless'? From: jle@tennecom.com Date: 06 May 99 - 05:08 PM A song my dad sang in the fifties when I was a kid goes: If I had a dictionary, I would use the customary, Compliments and phrases When I want to sing your praises, Oh, but now I am in the soup, My heart is doing loop-the-loops, And on top of all of that; I'M BREATHLESS. It goes on and on from there with a short bridge and a catchy melodic tune (probably from an old classic). As one would guess the lyric is sung in one breath. Please email my corporate address if you know of this song. Thanks-Jack. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req:Anyone hear of a song called 'Breathle From: GUEST,roconi Date: 19 Nov 04 - 10:29 PM I am looking for the last verse myself. I know most all of the other parts, so if you knoow the last verse, send it to me please. The parts I know are as follow-- BREATHLESS (Verse 1) If I had a dictionary, I could sing the customary, Compliments and phrases, when I want to sing you praises, But I'm up to here in trouble, my adversity is double, And on top of all of that-- I'm breathless. ( Verse 2) I take you for a little walk, and I'm the guy who likes to talk. You leave me on the porch and then I wind up with the torch, For everytime I find that I'm inclined to tell you what is on my mind Then I'll be darned if I'm not breathless. (Bridge) You take my breath away. My castles are all in a heap. You got me right where you want me. Baby you walk in my sleeep. (Verse 3) ???????????? So If--(Here is where I go blank) If you know the third verse, send it to roconi@adelphia.net |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req:Anyone hear of a song called 'Breathless'? From: PoppaGator Date: 11 Jul 07 - 05:45 PM Then there's the French New Wave film, "Breathless." I seem to remember there being some connection between the movie and Jerry Lee's song, but I'm not sure... Subject: RE: Lyr Req:Anyone hear of a song called 'Breathless'? From: PoppaGator Date: 11 Jul 07 - 06:31 PM So, SINSULL, you're saying that Jerry Lee is on that French soundtrack from 1960? I kinda thought so, but memory often fails me these days. I do remember seeing Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seburg on the screen, and director Jean-Luc Godard's name in the credits. As I recall, Jerry Lee's singing of the title line would be better represented phonetically as "breath-lessssss-uh." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req:Anyone hear of a song called 'Breathless'? From: SINSULL Date: 12 Jul 07 - 11:34 AM Jerry Lee Lewis appeared on a TV program recently and singing this left him breathless. He can still put on a show. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req:Anyone hear of a song called 'Breathless'? From: PoppaGator Date: 12 Jul 07 - 12:07 PM Sorry for adding to thread drift, but I have to respond: I saw Jerry Lee live at the New Orleans Jazz Festival just a few months ago. Despite looking pretty pale and frail, he managed to sound about as wild and crazy as ever. He couldn't perform any full-scale acrobatics, of course, so for his grand final gesture he arose from his piano stool, turned around, and sort of ginergerly lowered his butt onto the keyboard a couple of times before shuffling off stage. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req:Anyone hear of a song called 'Breathle From: Artful Codger Date: 12 Jul 07 - 06:09 PM Todd Rundgren recorded a great instrumental called "Breathless" on one of his early albums ("Something/Anything", I believe.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req:Anyone hear of a song called 'Breathle From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Jul 07 - 01:29 AM Lyrics copied from "Shoeless" Valerie's blog. I'M BREATHLESS 1. If I had a dictionary, I would read the customary Complimentary phrases When I want to sing your praises, But I'm up to here in trouble, My adversity is double, And, to make the matter worse, I'm breathless. 2. When I try to be poetic, You are never sympathetic. As it is, I do my best And hope and pray I pass the test, But up to now, I'm in the soup. My heart is doing the loop-the-loop. On top of all of that, I'm breathless. BRIDGE: You take my breath away. My castles are all in a heap. You've got me right where you want me. Baby, you walk in my sleep. 3. So I take you for a little walk, 'Cause I'm a guy who likes to talk. You leave me on the porch And then I wind up with a torch For every single time that I'm inclined To tell you what is on my mind I'm darned if I don't find I'm breathless! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Breathless / You Leave Me Breathless From: GUEST,Nick Hearn Date: 19 Jul 07 - 10:49 AM My dad has been talking of this song and remembers it from around 1937 or early 40s. thanks to above, i now have the words for him, but still would love to find out who did it. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Breathless / You Leave Me Breathless From: GUEST,cameyers Date: 17 Nov 07 - 12:12 PM There is a version done by Ozzie Nelson. Don't have the date but it includes solos by both Ozzie and Harriet Hiliard |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Breathless / You Leave Me Breath From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 17 Nov 07 - 05:17 PM This song (the "if I had a dictionary" one) is definitely from the 40s, as I recall it from my misspent youth. 1937 would be way too early, or I wouldn't recall it, because I was too young then. Other than "from the 40s", I can't pin it down. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Breathless / You Leave Me Breathless From: Jim Dixon Date: 01 Dec 07 - 12:53 PM I found a sound sample of I'M BREATHLESS performed by Skinnay Ennis and his Orchestra, and it is definitely the same song that begins "If I had a dictionary…." On his album, the songwriter credited is "Holtzer." I also found a sound sample by Ozzie Nelson and His Orchestra. It is definitely the same song, but there, the title is given as BREATHLESS and the songwriters are credited as "Dorothy Dick, Helmy Kresa, and Al Lewis." Go figure. |

There is also an mp3 file on that page. I have listened to it and made a few corrections. I have also marked with "(?)" some phrases that I find highly doubtful. BREATHLESS Frankie Masters and His Orchestra Vocalist: Frankie Masters I'm the picture of perfect health, Normal as can be. Though I'm short on material wealth, It never bothers me. I've always flurried with the term(?) Behind I find it there(?) But baby mine, where you're concerned, I'd like to know what's left. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Breathless / You Leave Me Breath From: GUEST,BobD in Arvada Date: 12 Jul 09 - 02:02 AM From a small book of "2nd 100 Top Pop Songs" by Hanson Press. Words, lead line, and chords. BREATHLESS by Eddie Cherkose and Jacques Press (presumably no relation to Hanson Press) The words are, as printed above: first verse: If I had a dictionary... 2nd verse: When I try to be poetic... bridge: You take my breath away... 3rd verse: I take you for a little walk... At the bottom of the page is says Copyright 1942 by Porgie Music Corp. It's a delightful little ditty, and I can see why people would add to it, expand it, or interpolate it into other pieces. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm Breathless / You Leave Me Breathless From: GUEST,Another Guest Date: 31 Jan 10 - 10:40 PM GUEST, those lines you quote, "if the words sound queer and funny to your ear..." are from "Mairzy Doats", not Breathless. Mairzy Doats = Mares eat oats; the whole song is purposely sung fast in a way to make beginning and ends of words blur together. Google it; you'll find lyrics and probably youtube videos. Totally different song. My mom sung it to me, too. You can find multiple versions to hear at http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Mairzy+Doats&search_type=&aq=f I am having less luck finding audible versions of Breathless online thus far because of more modern songs by the same title...I can't remember the melody of the break.... |

From what I have read it is common that these guys picked up this song then. Anyway, my Dad would sing this to me and amaze me with the speed at which he could sing it all clearly. When When he was sick with lung cancer and was having a very bad day I remember him standing at the side of the bed and he started singing this song. We both laughed until we cried.
