Subject: Matt Hyland - Chords, anyone?
From: campfire
Date: 07 May 99 - 02:22 PM

Just got a CD called BRIGHT GOLD in the mail from a group called Strong Old Music. It has a song called Matt Hyland on it. I'd never heard the song before, but I really like it. The lyrics are in the DT, but I don't play by ear. Can anybody help with chords or a source for the music? I don't mind buying something, if its available.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sorry, can't help. Iheard the song on a Martin Carthy album, and I've never been able to identify his chords- open tuning makes it tricky. A song that springs to mind also is Lady Diamond. Same scenario, but her father has her lover killed. The Steeleye Span version is wonderful. Hwyl Bron. (I'm Llanfair, but I'm babysitting next door, and using their PC)

Campfire: I have two versions. The Andy M. Stewart version from his "Donegal Rain" version goes something like this.....First Line A-------D------A Second Line D------A----E7----A Third Line A----F#M----D----A Fourth Line D------A----E7-----A

After playing along the rest goes through in similar fashio. At least you've got a start. Transposition might be in line for your vocal range. Hope I could help.....

Thank you Frank of Toledo. Yes, I can work with that - transposition is no problem if I need to, and I can "fudge" by ear, just need a start.

Llanfair - the CD notes say this version is in E, tuning DADGAD, capo 2. I have to admit non-standard tunings are beyond my skills.

Small World department: The liner notes from the CD I was sent tell that the woman singing was inspired to learn the song when ART THEIME sent her a recording by Cliff Haslam.

Frank of Toledo -

Even more thanks! Those chords work out just great, except with the tune on the version I'm learning, the F#M sounds a bit off, so I'm playing around with that. I really needed a new song for the next circle and this will be wonderful.

Mick Lowe- if you can make the link work or give me the URL, I would like to see the music. I like to see/hear as many versions of a song as possible before I "make it my own".

I see what you mean. After playing it a few more times the F#M doesn't fit at all. It's simply a matter of keeping it simple. I try to over due things and use some minors when I shouldn't. I'll get over it in time. Anyway glad I could help. It sure is a neat song and Andy M. Stewart does a wonderful rendition.......

Llanfair -

I checked out Lady Diamond, too; they are similar enough that I should probably wait on that one and not do them both the first time on the same night! Matt Hyland does have a happier ending, no?

The tune that Kate uses is her own, not a traditional one.

It's in the Kate Rusby Songbook
