Would someone please give me guitar chords for Isle au Haut Lullaby. I have the words and recording and can sort of fumble something out, but would like to do a better job of it. Thanks so much.

Hi, Dover -
The Rise Up Singing songbook has these chords for each of the four lines:

D Em A D

If I could give you three things, I would give you these:
Song and laughter and a wooden home In the shining seas

cho: When you see old Isle au Haut Rising in the dawn,
You will play in yellow fields In the morning sun.

Follow the link above to full lyrics.
Hope that helps.

-Joe Offer-

What an amazing coincidence. I had the "Rise up Singing" book sitting on the desk here, already open at that exact same page.
Thought I'd jump in with the chords.
I used the book last night to check on the words for "Bheir Mi Ó".
You're good Joe!

p.s. I recorded Bheir Mi Ó today and stuck it on MySpace

These are the ones that I was given a little while ago:-

The Hills Of Isle Au Haut

    D               Em               G       A          D
It's away and to the westward, it's a place a man should go

                           Em               G      A       D
Where the living is always easy and they've got no ice nor snow

Chorus
          G    A       D               G          D
And we'll haul down the sail, where the bays run together

          G    A       D          G       A       D
And we'll bide away our days on the hills of Isle au Haut

Lovely Song

It's a different song, guest Chalkie, but a lovely one as you say. Has Gordon Bok ever done anything that wasn't beautiful?

It's even more beautiful to one who has sailed those waters for years.

A couple who were married on Isle Au Haut, were on holiday in Cape Breton and came into the restaurant every night of their stay, just to hear "The Hills of Isle Au Haut".
It's another beautiful song by Mr. Bok and seems to be even more special to those who have seen the place.

Hydrogen Peroxide Blues
(Gordon Bok)

So, here I am, man, all alone again,
Anchored away the hell and gone again.
Another mile from another town,
The wind Northeast n'the rain coming down.
Home is the sailor, home from the sea;
He's a home for the mildew, a friend to the flea.
I don't care, man, I'm happy.

I got an old fat boat, she's slow but handsome,
Hard in the chine and soft in the transom.
I love her well; she must love me,
But I think it's only for my money.

And I don't mind staying and I don't mind going,
But I some damned tired of rowing.

No more tobacco, no more cheese;
I'm sprung in the back and lame in the knees.
It's a damned good thing I'm easy to please;
There ain't nothing in town on a Sunday
I don't care, man, I'm happy.
I got an old fat boat... etc.

You know, I got milk and I got ice;
I got home- made bread, a little old, but nice.
Everybody puts their cooking hat on
When you tell 'em you're leaving in the morning,
And I don't mind staying... etc.

Oh, hey, you know I got coffee, I got tea,
I got the beans and the beans got me.
I got tuna fish, I got rum,
I got a two -pound splinter in my thumb.
So, I'll take my toddy and my vitamin C
And the radio for my company.
Oh, me. I got the hydrogen peroxide blues.
I don't care, man, I'm happy.
I got an old fat boat... etc.

Well, mercy, mercy, I do declare,
If half the fun of going is getting there,
Mercy, Percy, you better start rowing,
'Cause the other half of getting there is going.
      Ready To Order?

Thanks Joe. Those are the chords I'd been playing with but the recording sounds like more were used. I guess I have to work on my picking.

Guest, Dover, TN- I'd suggest that you email Gordon himself. While I have found "Rise Up Singing" to be helpful at times, I've also found errors both in lyrics and in chords. Of course, it's unlikely that either of us will duplicate Gordon's chords or arrangement, it might help to ask him directly regarding the chords.

Here are the chords that Gordon uses.

G Am D
Two guitars, a 6 string in C and a 12 string with a capo.
Tune sounds in C

Just a wee question.. how do they pronounce "Isle au Haut"? In Metropolitan French it would be Isle a l'Haut, I think (wiv a haxent on the a), pron "eel allo".

In Maine we pronounce it I'll a ho.

I believe it was Champlain who named it eel a ho

Oops, pushed something wrong. Ignore that last one. Thanks to all who responded. I've been using the "Rise up Singing" chords supplied by Joe. Since I don't play a 12 string and can never do as well as Gordon Bok, I'll do the best with what I have. As long as I keep enjoying it, I'll keep at it - playing my generic acoustic from the 60s.
