MAILÍ NÍ MHAOILEOIN

Is an dtiocfá ag baint an aitinn liom, a Mhalaí Ní Mhaoileoin?
Óra thiocfainn is dhá cheangal leat, a chuid den tsaol is mo stór,
Is nach rachainn chun an aifrinn leat, is ní le grá don anam é,
Ach mar shúil is go mbeinnse ag amharc ar do chúilín catach bán.

Is an dtiocfá chun na coille craobhaí liom, a Mhalaí Ní Mhaoileoin?
Céard a bheadh muid a dhéanamh ann, a chuid den tsaol is mo stór?
Ag baint úlla de bharra craobha is ag imirt lena chéile,
Is ag rince ar thaltaí gléigeal’ nó go n-éiríodh an lá bán.

Is an dtiocfá ar chúl an teampaill liom, a Mhalaí Ní Mhaoileoin?
Is céard a bheadh muid a dhéanamh ann, a chuid den tsaol is a stór?
Ag éisteacht leis an dántaireacht ag ministéirí Gallda,
Is go socraíodh muid an cleamhnas úd, a Mhalaí Ní Mhaoileoin.

Chuaigh sí liom ar chúl an teampaill, mo chúig mhíle brón,
Is nár shíl sí gur le gean uirthi, sí mo chuid den tsaol is mo stór,
Nuair a d’ísligh mise síos uirthi, agus tharraing mé mo scian uirthi,
Agus lig mé fuil a croí léi go dtí lascaí na cuid bróg.

Is céard é sin atá dhá dhéanamh agat, a ógánaigh óig?
Céard é sin atá á dhéanamh agat, mo chuid den tsaol is mo stór?
Lig m’anam liom ’s ná deán é, is ní chuirfead éileamh choíchin ort
’S go siúlfainn na seacht ríochta le do leanbhán óg.

Is tháinig Mailí Bhán ar cuairt agam dhá uairín roimhe an lá,
Agus leag a béal anuas orm is nárbh fhuaire é ná an bás,
An ’do chodladh atá tú, a bhuachaill, is mithid duit feasta gluaiseacht,
Tá an tóir ag tíocht anuas ort faoi bhás Mhalaí Ní Mhaoileoin.

Agus cén chaoi a bhfuil do mháithrín, a ógánaigh óig?
Agus cén chaoi a bhfuil do mháithrín, mo chuid den tsaol ’s mo stór?
Óra tá sí buartha cráite is ní hé sin fhéin is cás di,
Ach mé bheith ag goil faoin gcroich amáireach faoi bhás Mhalaí Ní
Mhaoileoin.

sung by Máirín Ní Chéide
It's a murder ballad, see lurics, translation and discussion on another thread of about the version called Máire Ní Mhaoiléoin

YES!!! I did too, my Senior year in 1989. I was a three-year member of our girls' ensemble, II Soprano. I have been looking for these lyrics for years, and I expected a lot of varied Molly Malone stories. I'm so happy to find "the" version we sang... Thank you to the person who posted this.

I loved the tongue-in-cheek quote:

Frank Magee, chief executive of Dublin Tourism, said this earlier song could be the source of vile speculation that Molly supplied shellfish by day and special services to the students by night.

"Everyone knows that it is hard to believe that such activities, if they took place in Dublin in the late 17th century, were of a mercenary nature. The author admits to having imbibed drink, which is another unusual characteristic for a Dubliner, and so I believe his recollection of his night with Molly may have been clouded by alcohol. There is no evidence to suggest that Molly was anything other than a lady of virtue, who was smitten by the writer and may have shared her bed with him," he said.

"The current popular version of the song is evidence that the truth prevails," Magee insisted. "Molly was pretty, sweet and a fishmonger, and her ghost still hangs around Dublin crying: 'Cockles and mussels'."

Radio Eireann making a fuss this morning over the story in the Guardian about the discovery of the "original" Molly Molone lyrics. Guardian link Here http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/18/molly-malone-earliest-version-hay
If we are to go by the chorus published in the Guardian, Mudcatter Jim Dixon reproduced the full lyrics above in 2008!

Thank you Jim Dixon. I have been looking for these lyrics. We sang it in HS in a Girls choral arrangement and it was so moving. Thanks for taking me back 20+ years.

I found these lyrics at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090618225647AAVBsYE. However, the person who posted them didn't know the origin, and was asking for that information:

1. Down in County Kerry on the Emerald Isle,
Two lovers made a vow to be true;
And Patrick O'Leary told Molly Malone,
"My darlin' I'll come back for you
When the warm sun of Kansas makes the grain grow tall,
My darlin' I'll come back for you."

CHORUS: "Sail away, my darlin', to America.
I will wait in Ireland for ye.
When the warm sun of Kansas makes the grain grow tall,
My darlin', you'll come back for me.

2. Patrick had a brother who was already there,
And together they worked on the land.
He built a little cabin and planted a rose
For his Molly, sweet Molly Malone;
And his dreams were an echo of the song in her heart,
His Molly so far far away. CHORUS

3. A rage of scarlet fever started down in the South,
And Kansas wasn't far away,
And Patrick O'Leary was buried in June
Near the rose that he planted in May;
But his dreams were remembered in the heart of his love,
His Molly so far, far away.

CHORUS: "Sail away, my darlin', to America.
I will wait in Ireland for ye;
But I'll ne'er love another till the day I die,
When my darlin', you'll come back for me."

The lyrics start out

Down in County Kerry on the Emerald Isle, two lovers made a vow to be true.
And Patrick OLeary told Molly Malone, My darling I'll come back for ye.
When the warm sun of Kansas makes the grain grow tall, my darling I'll come back for ye.

I have been going crazy trying to find the lyrics and music to this song. It is a beautiful and sad ballad.

Subject: Lyr Add: MEET ME, MISS MOLLY MALONE
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 17 Mar 09 - 11:46 PM

From Songs for All Seasons edited by J. E. Carpenter (London: George Routledge and Sons, 1867)

MEET ME, MISS MOLLY MALONE.
A PARODY. Air—"Meet Me by Moonlight Alone."

Meet me, Miss Molly Malone,
At the grove at the end of the vale,
But be sure that you don't come alone;
Bring a pot of your master's strong ale,
A nice bit of beef, and some bread,
Some pickles, and cowcumbers green,
Or a nice little dainty pig's head—
"T'is the loveliest tit-bit e'er seen.
Then meet me, Miss Molly Malone.

Pastry may do for the gay,
Old maids may find comfort in tea,
But there's something about ham and beef
That agrees a deal better with me.
Then mind you be sure to be there.*
O come, if my dear life you prize.
I'd have lived the last fortnight on air,
But you sent me two nice mutton pies.
Then meet me, Miss Molly Malone.

[*another source has "Remember my cupboard is bare."]

I have also found a tune for the song MOLLY MALONE that begins "BY the big hill of Howth"—see above.

The tune is in One Hundred Songs of Ireland (no editor named) (Boston: Oliver Ditson & Co., 1859)

Subject: Lyr Add: WIDOW MALONE (Charles Lever)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 17 Mar 09 - 11:18 PM

The tune for this song can be seen in The Irish Song Book 4th edition, by Alfred Perceval Graves (London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1897)

WIDOW MALONE.
Words, Charles Lever. Air—"The Gap in the Hedge."

1. Did ye hear of the Widow Malone,
Ohone!
Who lived in the town of Athlone,
Alone?
Oh! she melted the hearts
Of the swains in them parts,
So lovely the Widow Malone,
Ohone!
So lovely the Widow Malone.

2. Of lovers she had a full score,
Or more,
And fortunes they all had galore,
In store;
From the minister down
To the clerk of the crown,
All were courting the Widow Malone,
Ohone!
All were courting the Widow Malone.

3. But so modest was Mistress Malone,
'Twas known,
No one ever could see her alone,
Ohone!
Let them ogle and sigh,
They could ne'er catch her eye,
So bashful the Widow Malone,
Ohone!
So bashful the Widow Malone.

4. Till one Mister O'Brien, from Clare—
How quare!
It's little for blushin' they care,
Down there—
Put his arm round her waist,
Gave ten kisses at laste.
"Oh," says he, "you're my Molly Malone,
My own!
Oh," says he, "you're my Molly Malone."

5. And the widow they all thought so shy,
My eye!
Ne'er thought of a simper or sigh,
For why?
"But, Lucius," says she,
"Since you've made now so free,
You may marry your Mary Malone,
Ohone!
You may marry your Mary Malone."

6. There's a moral contained in my song,
Not wrong;
And one comfort—it's not very long,
But strong:
If for widows you die,
Learn to kiss, not to sigh,
For they're all like sweet Mistress Malone,
Ohone!
For they're all like sweet Mistress Malone.

Subject: Lyr Add: SAINT PATRICK'S DAY IN THE MORNIN'
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 27 Nov 08 - 08:56 PM

Yet another lyric that mentions "Sweet Molly Malone"—yet I don't know whether this one was ever set to music. There is a tune named ST. PATRICK'S DAY IN THE MORNING but I don't think it would fit these lyrics.

From Work-a-day Warriors by Joseph Lee (New York: E. P. Dutton and Company, 1918):

SAINT PATRICK'S DAY IN THE MORNIN'

THE LOVE LILT OF CORPORAL PATRICK
MULLOHOY OF THE CONNAUGHT RANGERS

1. SAINT PATRICK'S Day in the mornin',
A year ago to-day,
I was awalkin' meself alone
Adown a green lane in ould Athlone—
Well, sure now, of course, sweet Molly Malone
Was with me upon the way;
I gathered a sprig of shamrock,
Which in her dear breast she set,
And, like the dew on the little plant,
With tears her blue eyes were wet—
For I was going away—
O, Saint Patrick's Day in the mornin'
A year ago to-day!

2. Saint Patrick's Day in the mornin',
This very blessed day,
The ould Colonel had us all out on parade,
And, "I'm proud of me bhoys," was what he said,
"Ye've won fresh laurels will never fade—
That's all that I've got to say";
Then he gave us a sprig of shamrock,
And I sent it home to my pet,
And all that I wrote aneath it was:
"Perhaps ye will not forget—
For ever and alway—
Saint Patrick's Day in the mornin'
A year ago to-day!"

3. Saint Patrick's Day in the mornin',
Next year this very day,
Please God I'll be walkin' meself alone
Adown that green lane in ould Athlone—
With by me side sweet Molly Malone,
To keep me upon the way;
Then I'll gather a sprig of shamrock,
And set it upon her breast,
And I'll place two kisses upon her lips—
And I'm thinkin' ye'll guess the rest—
For all that I'm going to say
Is, "Ye haven't forgotten the promise ye made
Upon Saint Patrick's Day—-
Saint Patrick's Day in the mornin'
Two years ago to-day?"

Subject: Lyr Add: BY THE GLANCE OF THOSE EYES /MOLLY MALONE
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 26 Nov 08 - 09:18 AM

Yet another "Sweet Molly Malone" song, from The Metropolitan Magazine, Vol XXXVI, London: Saunders and Otley, 1843.

IRISH SONG.
^^ BY THE GLANCE OF THOSE EYES.
Composed for Whitaker's beautiful air, "Molly Malone."
BY MRS. CRAWFORD.

1. BY the glance of those eyes,
That so dearly I prize,
'Tis for thee my heart sighs,
  My own darling Coleen,
While my thoughts wander free
Over mountain and sea;
All my soul is with thee,
  As it ever has been,

CHORUS: In the beautiful vale
Down by sweet Doneraile,
When I breath'd the soft tale
  That you linger'd to hear;
Nor absence had blighted,
Nor coldness had slighted
The vows we then plighted,
  My own Molly dear.
    Sweet Molly! sweet Molly Malone!

2. Oh! I think of the time,
In our love's early prime,
When I heard the bell chime
  From the old castle wall,
And we hasten'd to meet
By that river so sweet;
How my fond heart would beat,
  As you answer'd my call!

3. When I meet thee by chance,
At the fair or the dance,
Why so shy is thy glance,
  My own darling Coleen;
Must I still sigh in vain,
Wilt thou never again
List thy Carolan's strain
  For the days that have been

I searched for "Molly sweet Molly Malone" and found this. Not the song wanted, probably, but related?

From The pocket encyclopedia of Scottish, English, and Irish songs, 1816.
^^
MOLLY MALONE.

BY the big hill of Howth!
That's a bit of an oath,
That to swear by I'm loath,
  To the heart of a stone;
But be poison my drink,
If I sleep, snore, or wink,
Once forgetting to think,
  Of your lying alone.

CHORUS: Och! it's how I'm in love
Like a beautiful dove,
That sits cooing above,
  In the boughs of a tree;
For myself I'll soon smother
In something or other,
Unless I can bother
  Your heart to love me,
Sweet Molly, Sweet Molly Malone,
Sweet Molly, Sweet Molly Malone.

I can see if you smile,
Though I'm off half a mile,
For my eyes all the while,
  Keep along with my head:
And my head you must know,
When from Molly I go,
Takes its leave with a bow,
  And remains in my stead. CHORUS

Like a bird I could sing,
In the month of the spring,
But it's now no such thing,
  I'm quite bother'd and dead;
Och! I'll roar and I'll groan,
My sweet Molly Malone,
Till I'm bone of your bone,
  And asleep in your bed. CHORUS

^^COLLEEN MALONE
(Pete Goble &LeRoy Drumm)

             G                   D               C                     G
It's been ten years and three since I first went to sea
            C                      D                G
Since I sailed from old Ireland and home.
                                           D                   C               G
With those hills, lush and green where I parted my dream
               C                      D          G
When I dreamed of my Colleen Malone.

On the day I returned, to my sorrow I learned
That the angels had called her away.
To a grave on a hill overlooking the mill
( That's the place where she's sleeping today

(chorus)

As the soft breezes flow through the meadow I go
Past the mill with the moss-covered stone
Up the pathway I climb though the woods and the vines
To be with my Colleen Malone

She was faithful each day as I sailed far away
There was no one but me that she loved.
And I remember those eyes, soft and blue as the skies
And her heart was as pure as a dove

(chorus)

All the years of my life I will not take a wife
I will live in the valley alone.
Planting flowers around in this soft gentle ground
That is holding my Colleen Malone.
(Chorus)

I hope this the one you want
