Subject: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: JedMarum Date: 21 Jan 08 - 01:18 PM I believe I've made mention in other threads about a recent film for which I provided sound track music. Lone Chimney Film's movie is called BLOODY DAWN and it focuses on the border wars between Kansas and Missouri in the days surrounding the US Civil War. In particular the film focuses on a raid known as the Lawrence Massacre. The raid was led by William Quantrill and 450 renegade riders. The film uses narrative, interviews with historical experts and dramatic reenactment to tell the tale. They have licensed 4 of my recordings for use in the film and I am currently working with them on some of the incidental music. BLOODY DAWN was released on Jan 11 and is making the rounds of festivals and premier showings. It is expected to be released for television (probably History Channel and/or PBS) by fall of 2008 - and of course to DVD. The shows have all sold out so far, and had great reviews. They've asked me to do some more music (they're making some tweaks to the final cut). There are a few trailer or teaser type clips beginning to appear on Youtube, including a trailer with a song I wrote for the film called, ONE BLOODY FRIDAY. Here's a link to the trailer. Please take a look - also please rate and comment on the clip at Youtube. Ratings and comments help with the Youtube rankings - which in turn helps draw more traffic. Also please let me know if this link does not work. I have a friend in Australia who could not connect using the link - but could find it by going to Youtube.com and putting "Bloody Dawn: The Lawrence Massacre trailer" in the search box. |
Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: Peace Date: 21 Jan 08 - 01:21 PM I'll get to it in about five hours, Jed. Congratulations, btw. I hope it makes its way to Canada and I can go watch. |
Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: JedMarum Date: 21 Jan 08 - 01:35 PM I suspect it will play in Canada. The TV deals are not set yet, as far as I know, but the primary targets for distribution are History Channel and PBS. I suspect both of those play in Canada, and since this subject is of some interest to Canadian audiences, it is likely the film will show there too. But I'm just guessing. |
Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: SINSULL Date: 21 Jan 08 - 01:44 PM Wasn't there a scene in it with you playing the banjo? Did it survive the cutting room? M |
Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: SouthernCelt Date: 21 Jan 08 - 02:14 PM Hey, Jed, the link to YouTube worked for me (but I'm on dial-up so I'll have to wait until I'm on a T1 line at work to see it). That's a great song by the way. Does the film go into the reasons why Quantrill, Bloody Bill Anderson and the others were so enraged by the Jayhawkers, e.g., the Osceola, MO raid, the killing and maiming of Southern women being held by the Yankees in the collapse of the old warehouse/prison, etc.? I ask only because it'll probably be long time, probably when there's a DVD, before I can see it. SC |

Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: JedMarum Date: 21 Jan 08 - 08:00 PM SINSULL - The banjo playing scene is another film, one that is yet to be released and I hope the scene makes it to the film, but who knows. It's another film company and I don't where they stand in the production process. Yes - SC, the film does cover the history behind the story. It is actually a documentary with a few dramatic reenactments, like you saw in the trailer. There exists a lot of documentation from the period. |

Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: Big Jim from Jackson Date: 22 Jan 08 - 10:47 AM Jed, are you familiar with Cathy Barton and Dave Para's two albums of Civil War song from Missouri, Arkansas, and Kansas? There are some songs that are origional to the performers, but they are well grounded in the history and spirit of the times. They can be obtained from their web site. Jim |
Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: katlaughing Date: 22 Jan 08 - 11:10 AM Excellent, Jed. I *knew* when I saw the title of this thread, that it was you. Congratulations. The link worked fine for me and I left a comment under my youtube name, "melcina." I wish my dad were still around so he could hear your fine music and see the film. BTW, last year I was doing more genealogical research and found a complete Union officer's outfit which was auctioned off for a good sum which just happened to have belonged to one of my Kansas relatives, a fellow who had married into the family and would have been my grandma's uncle. It was really something to look at the pictures online and realise what they might have been through. |
Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: SouthernCelt Date: 22 Jan 08 - 01:05 PM Say, kat, was your ancestor in the regular army or was he a Kansas "redleg", many of whom wore Union uniforms? SC |
Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: Phil Cooper Date: 22 Jan 08 - 11:14 PM Jed, The link worked just fine. Looks like an interesting project. |
Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: katlaughing Date: 23 Jan 08 - 12:15 AM My great-grandfather was in the 6th Regiment, Kansas Cavalry which saw a lot of action. Not sure about the g-great-uncle, but the Union uniform was an officer's and quite fancy. The rebel g-grandad was a scout and spy and as such did not wear any uniform except a Union one one time when photos were being taken for later-published book! |
Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 23 Jan 08 - 08:13 AM The link works excellent over here. Got it in seconds. Fine songs, enjoyed them much. Congratulations. |

Subject: RE: Music for Quantrill Raid Film From: Uncle Phil Date: 24 Jan 08 - 08:52 AM Jed - The film looks like a first-class production. What are the other songs of yours that they using? - Phil |
