I have an album that features a song called "Tir na nog" which tells the story of Oisin and Niamh. I know the story well enough, but I can't find any info on the songwriter credited - Leo Kelly.

Is anyone else familiar with this song or the songwriter. If there are other versions of the song, that'd be great to know, but I'm also interested in seeing what other songs this Leo Kelly might have written.

Cheers,

Peter

Leo Kelly and Sonny Condell played together as "Tír na nÓg".

Tir na n-Og were an Irish group comprising Sonny Condell and Leo O Kelly who released at least three albums between 1969-73 or thereabouts. To call them irishippyfolk would not do justice to the ravishing acoustic interplay between the pair & the charm of their songwriting. Both artists went on to have solo careers, Condell particularly and both reunite for the odd Tir na n-Og gig in Ireland. Their second album " A Tear and A Smile" is one of my alltime favourites. Google them for more info.
             good luck

Try this:

Tir Na Nog Myspace

"You would stand with the early sun
On the rope that held my boat
And the wheeling seagulls began to wonder
Why I missed the tide"

Wonderful wonderful song. I sing it every time I go to sea.

Tom

Brill! Thanks for the quick response. I'll start looking at their stuff (hoping it's still in print).

Their records quite often turn up on ebay, and I'm pretty sure one or more were released as CDs. John Peel had them on his show a few times, and I remember seeing them in Dundee opening for Jethro Tull.
Pat Kilbride, formerly of the "Battlefield Band" did a fine version of their song "Tir Na Nog".

Tir na nOg opened for just about everybody signed to Island or to Chrysalis Management.

There's an album of BBC sessions available from Hux Records (who have also released archive material from that other great Irish 'hippy folk' band, Dr Strangely Strange): SPOTLIGHT: BBC Recordings 1972 - 3

Their back catalogue stuff is still easily available from Amazon and here 'tis...

Cheers

Nigel
