Subject: RE: National Cowboy Music & Poetry Gathering From: astro Date: 03 Feb 08 - 11:54 PM I would really like to make it up there one year. My older brother always goes and he usually wears one of those gigantic hats like Hoss Cartwright of Bonanza...but, in truth I do love the cowboy poetry. The music I've heard is great too! Have a great time there...if you see an older gent with a Hoss Cartwright hat on, please say the appropriate words.... Astro in LA... |
Subject: RE: National Cowboy Music & Poetry Gathering From: eddie1 Date: 04 Feb 08 - 01:22 AM Hi Open Mike Thanks for passing on the message. Ernie is a great guy and musician. We did a mad gig together in New York when I got paid an extremely large amount of money for singing "Kevin Barry". Turned out the owner of the bar was an ex-cop and most of the audience were cops and Irish! Eddie |
Subject: RE: National Cowboy Music & Poetry Gathering From: open mike Date: 04 Feb 08 - 04:26 AM the riders were not here this year. most of the people here wear cow boy hats..10 gallon hats, sombreros, "flat hats" (vaquero style) and others. It would be easlier to identify someone who does NOT wear one, here! http://www.hatcountry.com/ |
Subject: RE: National Cowboy Music & Poetry Gathering From: kendall Date: 04 Feb 08 - 08:37 AM Hey Laurel, tell me, was Glenn Ohrlin there? We did a storytelling workshop at the Border Festival in El Paso TX back in 1988. Haven't seen him since. |
Subject: RE: National Cowboy Music & Poetry Gathering From: Wesley S Date: 04 Feb 08 - 10:09 AM Don Edwards is a favorite of mine. He lives close to here. I just picked up his "Saddle Songs" a 2 CD set. Just one man one voice and a guitar. Great stuff. |
Subject: RE: National Cowboy Music & Poetry Gathering From: pdq Date: 04 Feb 08 - 11:53 AM I wish they would move this event to May or June. I live in central Nevada, usually a bit warmer than Elko. We got four more inches of "Global Warming" last night. It should get up to 32 degrees F today and go to 13 degrees tonight. Lovely for a good outdoor sing-around, don't ya think? There is a nice CD recorded in 2004 by Western Jubilee Recording Company L.L.C., item number 80302-01184-2. Some of the players are Skip Gorman, Baxter Black, Ian Tyson, Red Steagall, Glenn Ohrlin, Michael (M.) Murphey, Tom Russell, Sons of the San Joaquin, David Wilkie, Waddie Mitchell, Don Edwards, and even Wylie Gustafson. This CD can be ordered directly from the company in Colorado. The eBay dealers usually add a huge shipping charge that only fools pay. If it were a reasonable time of year, people could visit the nearby Ruby Mountains, which are just lovely at the right time. |

Subject: RE: National Cowboy Music & Poetry Gathering From: Bat Goddess Date: 04 Feb 08 - 12:48 PM Anyone remember S. Omar Barker? Classic cowboy poet -- died around 1985, I think. Anyway, back in 1962 (when I was about12) I memorized a short poem of his that had run in Western Horseman magazine. Starts out "They asked me what's a rodeo, I told 'em that I knowed / But to put it into language was a job that had me throwed." Anyway, I quote it reasonably often from memory (twice this weekend, appropriately after "Night Rider's Lament" both times in different company), but I haven't been able to find a copy of the poem and I'm not sure I completely trust my memory. Anyone have a copy? Know which of S. Omar Barker's books it's in? I can PM the words as I remember them, if that helps. Thanks! Linn |
