Me too and I am happy to keep a Mudcat book - handy since my stall is in the bar. Not that I am making any assumptions of course. :-)

Just back from Celters. Not bad for my first time. Although there was so much going on that I missed quite a lot because of parallel concerts etc.

Managed the two Celidhs (can we go back to calling them barn dances?) Both bands were very good.

Managed to hear John KP doing a sweaty set. It was really warm inside. Although colder thatn Sweden outside.

Also managed the children thing. Last Orders. Sorry about that remark. But "Last Orders" looked like they were 12 years old to me. My goodness they were good! Really giving it six!

And the girl singer what a lovely voice.

Missed most of the big names as I'd heard them before and wanted to sing myself so went along to Sue the borders, YMCA song sessions. Where there was plenty of talent. And met up with some old friends. Sorry Hills you're not tha old.

All in all a great time.

But Hey talk about knocking them them dead. Issey Emney had some poor woman have a heart attach in their concert. I know thats in bad taste, but The woman was there doing what she wanted to be doing and enjoying herself I'm sure and thats's how I'd like to go. With respect I am respectfull to the feelings of the familly concerned.

Chas.

Hi Chas

You were the only one to sign the book.

The girl singer in Last Orders is Marie-Louise O'Connor (known as Maz) who is the sister of Joe O'Connor.

I happen to think she is brilliant. The group is brilliant.

Certainly enjoyed the Festival. I agree that Last Orders and Marie-Louise O'Connor were excellent. How does that melodeon player get so fast? Didn't see all the acts, but Spiers and Boden gave thrilling sets, as usual. I really enjoyed Steve Turner as well - low profile but great singing. And aren't the Askew sisters good - so young and so talented. Makes you want to spit.

I did my bit masquerading as Morris Dancer on the Saturday - bit on the chilly side.

It was a shocker that a lady died of a heart attack in mid-concert, but hopefully she didn't suffer and her last memories will have been happy ones.

See you next year

Tradsinger

Yeah, Well I missed them, but something to look forward to.

I'm back over at the end of July.

The Askews are great too. And such really nice girls. Steve Turner needs more comments telling people how good he is - brilliant singer!

I don't know how Joe O'Connor plays so fast - I suspect it is because he can - BUT - I rarely think such things are the result of natural talent - I think instead of the hundreds upon hundreds of hours of practice.

He's too young to have had hundreds of hours of practice Dave.

Lady to passer-by - "Excuse me, how do I get to the Carnegie Hall?"
Passer-by - "Practice, madam, practice."

I can well believe that Joe O'Conner does do hours of practice. He probably also started young. I have played hundreds of hours of melodeon but am not that standard! I think that a lot of musicians tend to play the same things every time they pick up their instrument. There is a difference between playing an instrument for 20 years and playing it for 1 year 20 times over.

Ah, youth!

I had the pleasure of "teaching" Joe at a workshop some years ago. He was already astonishingly fast and, more to the point, accurate and expressive. I used to leave these workshops having learnt more than most of my students!
I think hundreds of hours practice is about right but you also have to possess a natural talent to achieve Joe's standards.
When you get to my age you work on which notes you can leave out rather than "why play one note when five will do" - I call it maturity (or idleness).
Martin
