We do have a number of Firefox users here, and the following article may be of interest. I found the section for webmeisters particularly interesting; but as I'm not a "Foxy" it may be old-hat to those who are.

Magazine editors sometimes do have strange taste in toys, so comment on any of the suggestions that our own people know about (and use?) might be appropriate.

some of their recommendations are a bit ...ummm ...narrow and pop-cultural. Coupon notifier? Sports toolbar?...ah, well.

ExtremeTech is the Ziff Davis magazine for the "build your own" and "tweak till it smokes" crowd. Needless to say they like "gadgets" - a lot, and "isagadget" seems to be one of their favorite terms. "Isausefulgadget" appears to be less of a concern.

One thing that is annoying with Firefox recently (and I have used it for a long time) is that there are constant updates. I would like to see fewer. It seems a bit more sluggish than it was at one time too.

Of course, it still is my preference over explorer....or anything over Microsoft....

I do find the "Web Developer" extension handy. In the top 10 that's in, I also have GreaseMonkey installed but I only use that as it's needed for a script I use when on the the BBC message boards (see here for this javascript. I find it it does help when using their boards).

Is there a good Non Adobe 3rd party pdf viewer extension for Firefox? The link from JohninKansas doesnt seem to have such a reader extension. I have had a brief look at the FF extensions site with little success either. All I found there was Adobe reader.

As a user, rather than a developer, I have 4 extensions which I wouldn't be without.

Adblock Plus does what it says, and is easy to customise.

IE Tab is so easy for those badly written sites that display correctly only in IE. One click switches the page rendering engine for that page only.

I use Real Player, and the Real Player Browser Record plugin identifies all recordable content on a page, and a single click downloads it. Works fine with YouTube and many other sites.

Finally, I use SnagIt for screen capture, and the SnagIt Extension puts a toolbar in Firefox which accesses all the basic functions of SnagIt.

As far as pdf viewer is concerned, I haven't found a Firefox extension other than Acrobat yet. I use FoxIt for most pdf reading, but have to suffer the slower Acrobat within Firefox.

I use Firefox - though I have had to re-install twice which was a nuisance since each time I lost my patiently built up bookmarks.

But I went to one of the recommended sites and found this:

"To do this the extension provides multi-extension installation support, hacking capabilities to the Extension/Theme manager windows, features to find and troubleshoot Extensions/Themes Build, GUID and Profile information".

Sorry - you lost me after "extension".

But I agree about "anything over Microsloth".

Yes, that can be a problem - a lot of writers of extensions don't have English as the first language.

Having said that, I suspect JiK may find the quote easier to understand than current Microsoft babytalk!!

Thanks for posting those - the webdev tools look very useful to me.

Re PDFs: I always use Adobe Reader for them - the problem with other PDF viewers is that sooner or later you come across a PDF that they can't handle. What's the problem with Adobe? It's free and it works!

Yep...keep Adobe somewhere for those rare needs, but use Foxit for default or, even better, PDF Xchange Viewer. (Foxit is still a bit faster to load, but PDF Xchange does more tricks)

Thanks BillD, I downloaded and looked at PDF Xchange Viewer the only problem is, and its my fault for not being clearer, I use a Mac as my main machine on the mixed network I am running. So I need a non adobe pdf viewer to suit the Mac version of Firefox. Are there any options out there?

One of my pet peeves is when a link takes me to a pdf without warning. An extension that I just got that I really like is "PDF Download", available on this page (scroll down to find it) on the Mozilla site.

"Whenever you click on a PDF file, PDF Download lets you know before trying to open it, and then offers you choices such as downloading, opening, or converting it straight to HTML."

"View as HTML" thus far (only a few tests) has worked very well and is fast.

No Preview great, I quite agree. I'm looking for a pdf viewer that lets me view a pdf online in Firefox.

I used to have PDF Browser Plugin for safari that work fine but since I installed the Adobe CS3 master collection it seems to have nuked that plugin so I get the Adobe plugin now instead. Thats no real drama at present but when I view a pdf in Firefox all I can do is save the file to disk and view it then. I cant leaf through it online and thats why I am looking for a small preferably non Adobe pdf plugin for Firefox.

I use NoScript all the time. I allow things on a temporary basis, and sites I visit a lot I permit permanently.

What I would like is an option to ban a site permanently, like Google Analytics.

I'm finding that the more recent version of Firefox is a bit unstable. Sometimes (often) when I'm trying to open a page when I have multiple windows up, it will reshuffle the windows and put a different one on top than the one in which I'm opening the page. And sometimes session manager is unpredictable. Sometimes it only saves part of a session. With that said, I still prefer Firefox over all of the other browsers I've used.

I just now installed the IE Tab extension, and I can't figure out how to make it work. It looks like it was supposed to have installed an icon just to the left of the place where the URLs go and to the right of the home icon, but there's nothing there.

Has anyone else used this extension, and if so, how did you get it to do what it's supposed to do?

CarolC - check the Tools menu. There should be a new item "IETab Options". Under General Settings you can have the icons where you want them.

I used to use "fire something" which opened up each page with a new
critter name, such as "volcano whale" or some such..apparently this
is no longer available..I miss it! Now i use the extension/theme
walnut with a wood grain "skin" on web pages.

Oh, that is so cool!

The problem was that the icon was in the lower right-hand corner of my window instead of where the illustration was showing it up to the left of the URL box at the top of the window, and it's not the same icon as in the illustration. It's just a little firefox symbol (unless the tab is showing explorer, and then it's the explorer symbol).

IETab is a very cool extension.

I have Firefox as my main browser and also use Opera, SeaMonkey and IE7 as the mood takes me.   On the whole I'm happiest with Firefox. I only use two extensions - Adblock Plus (with a standard set of filters) and FireFTP which I really like.

I've added AdBlock Plus and the Filterset.G updater to the mix, thanks to suggestions here.

It seems to do well. It's fun now to go to the same page with Opera and Firefox and get a before/after picture.

Ads can also be a form of malware distribution, I gather.

The ad blockers are especially helpful to us on dial-up, they make page loading faster. Another tool I find very useful is Flashblock which blocks Macromedia Flash from loading automatically but lets you see it, if you want to, by clicking on it.

Anyone else having problems with their firefox browser? I haven't done anything new, no opening of email attachments, virus scan is clear, adaware and spybot are both clear, too. Yet, starting yesterday, I get blank pages which say Done, when I click on refresh they then load with all of the regular stuff displayed. If I click on a posting, sometimes I get an error message about "my browser" or a different error message which I sent to Max. He and I both think the problem is in my unit, the new, refurbished Dell unit. I've got Kerio/Sunbelt firewall running, but haven't changed any of those parameters, either. Sometimes when I try to post after an unsuccesful try, it doesn't *see* my mouse arrow and won't register that I have clicked, until I hit the refresh button. It's all just weird!*bg* Any ideas of what might be happening?

I've just been reminded of another extension that can come in handy. User Agent Switcher.

Sometimes a web site will want particular browser(s) but will work with others. UserAgent switcher, will make firefox appear to be a different browser. In the case that has just reminded me, the user wanted video from Fox News. That site gives:

Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP Media Center 2005, Mac OSX 10.3 or Mac OSX 10.4 is required to view this page

but telling it your firefox browser is IE7 on Vista will make the video available.

I have just given up on firefox and installed Opera. CarolC, I have been having the same problems you noted,same version, but I don't have any IEtab thingie, so not sure if it's the same cause. I spent an hour on the phone with DellTech this morning and he got rid of two things which were still trying to run on startup, even though I'd gotten rid of the programs, or something according to the young, fast-talking, mealy-mouthed whippersnapper who worked on it.:-) So, it ran better after he did his thing, then Firefox started acting up, again. I tried out IE, no problem. Opera, no problem, so I know it has to be something to do with Firefox. (I miss the auto spellcheck among other things.)

So, anyone have any ideas and/or tried the beta version? I like opera but i miss firefox already.

Well, my bank doesn't support Opera, so I found a different place to download Firefox, again, and am now trying it. So far, so good. Maybe I did just get a couple of bad downloads. A funny thing...their spell check tells me I have spelled "firefox" incorrectly! It's nice to see it working, though.

That didn't take long. It's doing the same s-l-o-w going and errors galore. I htought maybe it might be spybot or AVG causing the problems with just Firefox. Could that be. Or, should I turn off all of the Windows firewall and virus detector? For now, I am back on Opera.

My puter doesn't like the recent mozilla updates and I keep having to restore to a previous setting and the spellcheck facility has gone, also pages I used to peruse now say that the "browser does not support the page" or something like that.

kat...you 'might' fill in with the last version of Netscape. It is 'offically' discontinued, and not supported, but it still works fine, and is built on the Mozilla/Firefox engine.....which means that add-ons from Firefox will work with it and that it has the same ability as Firefox to get to your bank. (I am using it because of some instability in Firefox which causes crashes at weird times)

I suppose that in a couple of years, various things will make Netscape a problem for 'some' operations, and some updates to add-ons (extensions) probably won't be supported....but many software programs that are no longer being developed are still perfectly functional for most purposes.

I have ...ummmm... *blush* 7 versions of Opera, 2 of Firefox, I.E., Netscape, 3 of K-Meleon, and 2 of "Off-by-One" installed. I actually
use 4 of these semi-regularly, and 2 others now & then....and 2 more on rare occasions.

*grin*...yes, Kevin, I've seen listings for that one. It feels like an ad for "pen pals". If I am judgung hastily, correct me.

I don't exactly 'collect' browsers, I just accumulate them...if they seem useful. But thanks....

(I once had something called "Stealth Browser" which was designed to use in the workplace to fool the boss. It hid inside a window in another program. Very clever, but.....)

There at least 4-5 others that I see recommended, but most run on the I.E. engine, and I don't care for it at all. (I only keep IE because it is such a hassle to get rid of it, and a very few sites need it)

One virtue of all the choices is that people differ widely in what they want their browser to do and look like. My two main ones have a 'wood' background, almost no graphics in the toolbars (text only), and ways to NOT see all the toolbars until I wish.
I also choose the display fonts, how they use tabs, how they react when closed (save current tabs or not), what search engines are quickly available...etc., etc.

Thanks, Bill. I didn't look for Netscape because I'd heard they'd dumped it. I've now downloaded it, too. Do you know if Opera has a spellchecker like the one Firefox has? I see Netscape does and I have it ticked. I feel so sad about Firefox.:-)

In Opera you do spell checking differently. You can highlight a word and right click on it, and it looks up the word, but as far as I know, there is no automatic 'as you type' method.....that is why I use the wonderful "TinySpell" which works ALL the time, no matter what you are typing, or where.

WooHoo! Got FF 2.0.0.14 on Win9x to be able to change the text size permanently!

The trick is that I can't do it from INSIDE the browser - maybe some internal link broken in the Registry (9x doesn't do 'Restore previous setup' easily!)- I only get 4 windows with no 'header' on top.

But if you run 'Firefox.exe -preferences' it opens up a version of FF that ONLY gives all the preferences screens properly! I set the text font size (can also change the Font and colours!) so that I can see things clearer - no more rude comments about needing specs from JiK!   :-P

Funny I don't remember the earlier version doing that...

Now I only have to fix a few things like the 'go back a screen' button not working, etc!!!

Well couldn't post before... then discovered that that trick only worked once - now the 4 windows that come up are only that section for the options that allow me to change the text size.... !!!!!!!!

BTW, also broken is the bit that allow one under the edit menu to search a page for some text.

Mozilla has admitted shipping a Firefox plugin that had virus-infected code in it.

Mozilla security chief Window Snyder said in a blog posting last night that because of a virus infection, the Vietnamese language pack for Firefox 2.0 was polluted with adware.

Mozilla said that a malicious program inserted adware code into a Firefox plugin that has been downloaded thousands of times over the past three months.

Firefox developers have now scanned all of their plugins. The Vietnamese language pack is the only one that had this kind of code, she said.

The open-source browser maker does not know how many people were infected with the adware, but the plugin was downloaded more than 1,200 times in the past week and has been downloaded 16,667 times since November.

"Everyone who downloaded the most recent Vietnamese language pack since February 18, 2008 got an infected copy," Snyder wrote.

If it is a virus, it is "transmissible." While only the Vietnamese language pack was infected at time of download, anyone who's communicated with anyone who's communicated with anyone who knows someone who might have used the Vietnamese package would be advised to scan with a current AV.

The Trojan carried by the virus apparently is adware, and may redirect you to sites that annoy. The article doesn't indicate a spyware content, or anything destructive to data on infected machines; but it's apparently quite recently discovered so it may have "features" unknown.

The customary and usual meaning of the term "virus" is that it can "infect" and that it attempts to spread something. The term was used in the report, but is so frequently misused to mean "anything you don't want on the computer" that it's difficult to know when a reporter knows what (s)he's talking about or is just quoting someone who didn't.

The article (at the link) appeared to "de-emphasize" any risk that this malware could/would be spread, but a healthy dose of embarrassment could account for "neglecting to mention" all possible risks, especially in a "first report" of something recently discovered when all the risks aren't fully known.

The source that sent me the report is a reliable one (at least they tell me they are) but since it came from a UK publisher ... ... one never knows ... .

Only Spypbot S&D still seems to work on Win9x (lucky I used to have several) - it produced a raft of crud accumulated over time - but not anything related to this - and the problems still exist.

It seems that I have suffered bit rot of many of the FF system JS & some css files.

Discovered that the FF updates assume that the Mozilla App_data lives in the standard Win directory sub tree - not on another partition as i had it set up. Un & Re installs had failed, wonder if that could be the problem - going to try a new install with the default set up. Can't find
any Registry entry that would point there though.

I haven't experienced any of the problems with Firefox that I described earlier in the last month or two, katlaughing. I don't know exactly why... maybe I installed an update that corrected it or something.

Well it looks like the 'search on page' is now working. But the info that info at the top of the page that normally gives the Title of the page currently viewed - seems to get 'stuck'...

But then it could be some interaction between the various add-ins...
