Subject: RE: Phone numbers in songs. Subject: Lyr Add: CROSSED LINES (Dick Miles) From: The Sandman Date: 28 Feb 08 - 12:27 PM here is a self penned one CROSSED LINES. Hello, Operator? I cannot get through. I want Seaton Delaval not Seaton Carew. Can you find me a line to Newcastle on Tyne? All the lines are engaged: I’m a bit short of time Not Newcastle under Lyme, Ashton under Lyme The Story line, the Time Line, or any other line I’m parked on yellow lines and I don’t want a fine Please find me a line to Newcastle under Tyne Hello, Operator? I cannot get through The code that I’m using is 0632 I keep hearing strange noises, which sound very rude It seems like old Busby’s been at the home brew As my call was connected, I tried once again Can you book me a holiday away from the rain? A voice said we can sir, if you feel so inclined But this is the prison, to unwind not a place I breathed a deep sigh as she put through my call Can you book me a holiday away from it all A voice said we can sir, with full bed and board. But it's on the cold side, for this is the morgue I begged the young man to find me the line The number I want is triple 3 6 2 9 He asked me to hold, for what seemed an age Then went off to lunch while I simmered with rage Just then a voice said is there anyone there It's like waiting for Godot. I’m just going spare I said where are you? she replied in New York Our lines must be crossed so let's have a talk So we talked then for hours and we got on so fine That were meeting next week for supper and wine So here's to crossed lines and the strange twist of fate That got me a holiday, and also a date. words and music Dick Mileshttp://www.dickmiles.com |

Subject: Wikipedia article on this From: JesseW Date: 31 Dec 11 - 08:48 PM The once was a English Wikipedia article on this topic, here , but it was deleted back in 2007. This is (except a message at the top, and removal of html comment markers), a copy of what was there as of 13 May 2007, at 01:04. It is licensed under either of two licenses: Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike License 3.0 or later OR the GNU Free Documentation License. ------------------------ This article lists song titles that either are or contain telephone numbers within them. The notation used for the original "named exchanges" capitalised the first two letters as the only in the exchange name to actually be dialed; in the years leading up to direct long-distance dialing, numbers originally formatted in LIberty9-9999 format became LI9-9999 and then 549-9999 (for example) in preparation for the addition of a prepended area code. The length of numbers, often four or five digits in smaller communities, was also standardised in North America. For easy translation, here are the numbers for each letter (using the modern ITU E 1.161 system that has all the earlier letters in the same place, but adds the Q and Z that were omitted from old telephone dials): ** ABC: 2 ** DEF: 3 ** GHI: 4 ** JKL: 5 ** MNO: 6 ** PQRS: 7 ** TUV: 8 ** WXYZ: 9 * The North American Numbering Plan reserves a portion of the exchange prefix 555- for use in fictitious telephone numbers, in an attempt to prevent the problems caused by the use of real numbers in films, television, or music. The 555- exchange originally contained the directory/information number 555-1212 and little else, allowing a block of fictitious numbers to be reserved across multiple area codes. * Song titles from other countries may use different keypad mnemonics to spell out phone numbers. The number listed for each song reflects the expected use. * The band 999 was named after the British emergency telephone number (the counterpart to US 911). * The band 000 (Nolla Nolla Nolla) of Finland was named after the then-current Finnish emergency telephone number. Subject: RE: Phone numbers in songs. From: WindhoverWeaver Date: 01 Jan 12 - 05:33 AM One song I don't see in any of the posts above (including the long wikipedia list) is Christine Lavin's song "Star 69" which is the US number that re-dials the last number that called you. It is a really funny song about love and deception and the dangers of modern technology. It's on her 1995 album "Please don't make me too happy". Lyrics don't seem to be in the DT. |

It also includes two transcriptions of the Gospel song "Jesus Is On The Mainline", as well as a YouTube sound file and YouTube video of that song. Best wishes, Azizi Powell |

Subject: RE: Phone numbers in songs. From: WindhoverWeaver Date: 02 Jan 12 - 11:58 AM Here are the lyrics to the song I mentioned. I'll look into adding them to the DT as well: Star 69 Christine Lavin (1995) (First 10 lines sort of half spoken, half sung) It used to be so easy to use the telephone, You'd pick it up and dial and they would answer if they were home, But then the answering machine helped us cut the cord, Now callers could be screened--or better yet, ignored. Then came call waiting, ah, we don't let that upset us, Though I have come to call call waiting "chattus interuptus". But theres a brand new service, it's called "star 69", It redials the last person who called you and puts them back on the line. There's call forwarding, there's beepers, there's call conferencing and such, A panoply of choices, sometimes it's all too much. You see There was a sweet young girl, so trusting, so naive, You could tell her anything and she would believe, She met a computer repair man, his name was Jim, And it was just a matter of time until she truly cared for him. Though he criss-crossed the country, he'd see her whene'er he could, She grew to love him dearly, though him kind and thought him good, But there was one thing about him she considered a minor quirk, He said he had no home phone, she must contact him at work. It was his beeper number he instructed her to dial, He'd always call her back so fast his haste would make her smile, They carried on for months like this, until one rainy day, She called him on the beeper, he did not call back right away. But when he did, she heard background noises that made her suspicious, Was that babies crying, was that someone doing dishes? When they hung up she sat and pondered for quite some time, Then with shaky hand she dialed star 69. A woman answered the telephone, the young girl asked for Jim, Then quickly added "who is this?" The woman said "I'm married to him", The conversation that followed was the kind that men most dread, The young girl told the wife everything her husband ever said, Or did, or promised her, then the wife had her say too, About the three young children and how her income pulled them through, They talked, they cried, they talked, they laughed, Now you could say he's in a bind, All because the phone company has given us "Star 69". Modern conveniencies can help you, but they can backfire, If you are the kind of person who is a liar. In this global village it is best to tell the truth, And beware if someone's courting you from a telephone booth. Yes, in this global village, take this as a sign, Remember that repair man and star 69. |

Subject: RE: Phone numbers in songs. From: Max Johnson Date: 14 Jan 12 - 07:17 AM Standing alone in the damp and the dark in a GPO call box in Finsbury Park, I dialled three numbers, she said Ello?' But if I press Button 'A' all my pennies will go. So, say who you are love, and not Ello?' Just give me your name and give me your number. Say who you are love, and not 'Ello?' If I press Button 'A', all my pennies will go. The song never tells us what the numbers actually were, alas. |
