Subject: Beverley Fringe this year?
From: John J

Does anyone know if there's going to be fringe goings on this year? I really don't want to use the main festival site after last year's experience.

John

Not the festival or the site which were excellent, just dealing with the organiser.

I'll second John J's request for info.

Didn't make it last year, but expect to be there this year and apart from the odd concert, the fringe is generally the thing that I spend most time at.

Be good to know what's happening where and with whom. The festival website just say fringe details to be 'updated in due course'.

Anyone know anything?

Cheers

Why call it the "fringe"?
Just call it the Tiger!!!

I assume that ThreeSheds is the landlord of the Tiger :-))

What about those bastions of enjoyment otherwise known as Hodgsons, Monk's Walk or the Sun/Tap&Spile/whatever?

Are they bereft of entertainment, or is ThreeSheds being somewhat economical with his info. Good as the Tiger is, I do appreciate (and need) the little excercise that I get staggering from one venue to another.

Coem on, spill the beans

Hi JJ and all. Campervan you certainly rose to the bait with Andy "Three Sheds" as he is one of the lads at our side of the bar. However he will have a wry smile after this one. How are you and is Big Bird ok. As you know last year was my last year of running the fringe, that honour has been handed "NOTE" by vote to Roy, a lot younger than this old git with new ideas e.g. the open mike last year, or as someone put it the harem, but it was excellent. I am sure Roy will drift into this thread and will post the info as soon as it is available.cheers oombanjo

Hi all!

What we're after is an alternative campsite. Last year there was talk of an almost completely separate event catering for just for the fringe.

Briefly, my problem with last year was I phoned the organiser to check we could camp on the festival site for £10 (as in previous years) and she told me that we could. I sent off my cheque immediately and then got a phone call from the woman who denied all knowledge of the phone call. She said the only way we could use the festival site was if she doubled the camping charge and also that we bought a festival event ticket - that I wouldn't use because I would be attending a fringe event. I really don't want to play by those rules again.

We enjoyed the fringe immensely but finances dictate that the weekend has to be affordable.

John

Seperate camping site would be great. For reasons I don't want to go into, I don't want to go the main fest or put the levellerwagon there this year (no, I haven't been banned after the 'stewards enquiry' last year!). I do want to go to the fringe instead this year, though.

Hi all, the fringe will be going on in lots of the usual (and maybe a few unusual) pubs around the town. I'm sorting out the sessions over the next few weeks, there will be a mix of 'organised' sessions & singarounds and a few pubs that will be welcoming folks to just turn up and play. There is also plenty of free music going on around the festival site including a big 12 hour session, Teenage Cancer Trust Showcase marquee & the late night festival tent.

can any one tell me what is going on please.?..I do believe that the regular beverey fest has had to move to the race course. Now there seems to be some self elected person called John who objcts to this move and is advertising a second fringe festival run by some one called Dereck Waudby. This cannot be very good for the full ethos of what festivals are about for us all to be in competition with each other..would you say?

O right much of this is passed me by!

So a move from the Leisure centre and therefore a move from centre of Beverley all the usual haunts and camp site

I think abit of research and more information needed here initially from Ms Wade

Is there a website?

I was a regular at Beverley Folk Festival for many years, camping at the Leisure Centre, and it was usually a very good campsite.

I would buy a weekend ticket but only went to a the odd concert, mainly I was there for the fringe, and I was also there the year that the fringe was the only show in town.

But things change, the festival is evolving - for the better or for the worse? Only time will tell.

But I won't be going, it's a long walk from the race course and unless I'm proved very wrong, then I don't think that there'll be the same level of activity in the town centre pubs.

If somebody says , after this coming year's festival, that I was totally mistaken then I might re-consider. Otherwise I will just wish good luck to everyone involved and say 'Goodbye and thanks for the good years'.

Hy Kampervan how you doing

Yes I have just had a good look at the video of the new Beverley folk festival at Beverley Racecourse from the festival website!

Personally I have never been a fan of outdoor marquees etc but the video gives a really good impression of what the 30th Anniversary is likely to look like!

It is they say about 15/20mins walk from the town centre, if fit not too great a distance and for many it will be Sun Inn/Tap to camp site late at night or something akin

I would urge all to look at the website and make your own decision

Bigger festivals are probably more attractive to younger people and times change

Many years we spent (The Barnsley Lads ~ Booker and Padgett running singarounds) in the likes of Nellies and the Sun/Tap and Spile in the company of Jim McDonald and Les and Maggie from Hull and had folk club sessions in Nellies with Brenda and Norrie and Geoff Turner.

and not to forget Danny Couper!

Lot of work to organnise with Chris Wade and Ray Williams and Beverly folk club people in the early days

Best wishes to all in the new team for the 30th

Ray Padgett

Hi Ray

I'm good thanks.

I agree with your take on the situation, but the 15 20 min walk looks to be along a quiet (dark?) country road, not quite the same as staggering back to the Leisure Centre through a lit town centre. I think that it might put a lot of people off going into town.

But yes, Bigbird and I had some brilliant years in Beverley, thanks in very large measure to the people such as yourself and the others that mention.
However things change, the organisers have to take the festival down the route that they believe is best.

I speak to Jim McD from time to time and have watched the start up of the Sheffield weekend with interest. Perhaps we should try to get up that some time soon.

Take care and best wishes for the future.

Cheers

K/van

If I remember correctly the move was forced by East Riding Council's decision not to allow the festival the use of the Leisure Centre site.
So it was either find an alternative or give up.

I think that is a fair and positive statement Michael.

I believe Ms Wade has provided buses between the festival site and the town.

Still no reply from the "official" fringe organisors or any Beverley fringe or otherwise people.A great guy called Mick Mcgarry had a great deal to do with the fringe a while ago..mebes ask him?

I believe from a conversation yesterday that the Sun is likley to be hosted by Jim McDonald and others for the weekend.

Where camping can be other than the Racecourse will be a problem that needs to be solved!

Mick McGarry is a fine singer and shanty man and did some song spots at Beverley Beck a year or so ago which was well received (on a Keel Boat)

Camper vans needed probably

Derek Waudby and John Shuttleworth seem to be organising things. There will be a fringe and myself (Jim McDonald) and Chris Mullins have been booked to run a singaround at Hodgsons on Saturday night and at the Sun on Sunday. Derek tells me that the people at Hodgson don't mind people camping at the back of the pub. Vans etc too. I believe Mr McGarry has been booked to run the 'official' singarounds at the Racecourse

What is your beef against 'John the Harp' Guest concerned? and why don't you use your name and stop hiding as guest to pitch your personal attacks?
What ever John's views are about the move to the Race course, he has actually done a great job in organising and keeping music going on a Saturday in the Sun over the last few years.

Were is there to camp at Hodgesons? are they going to use the field?

Been on the festival website and ther is a blank page for the Fringe.

One would think the Fringe would use that to post details of camping, singarounds time hosts etc.

Or are the "official" fringe going it alone?

That would be a great shame after all the hard work done by people keeping music going in Beverley.

Just an update from me.

Brian Nelson and I are booked to run the Minster Bar on the racecourse, under the very original name of Mcgarry Nelson!

This will include our producton of "Flowers on the Water" an original illustrated performance of our own songs and anecdotes about the demise of the Hull trawling industry.

We will be running singarounds to, dont know about being official Jim!! We have secured free entrance fo anyone who wants to come to the Minster bar.The organisors have put buses on between the Racecourse and the town, so really hope to see a few of you there.

Hope to get down to your session over the weekend Jim, as well as all of the fringe.

The very intresting and windswept Mr.Fromull, like me a founding member of the Hull Elderly Gentlemens binge Drinking club, will be running a meet and greet at Hodgesoms on the Friday along with Maggie.

A bit unfair to say I did some song spots at Beverley Ray!

I was part of the fringe in Beverley and ran singarounds at Monks Walk for a number of years, until pettiness and begrudgery caused me to leave.

Also ran two very succesfull Maritime Festivals in the Beck.

Any way I hope to see you again for a song and pint or twelve, Ray!

and all the best to all of you for a good festival!!

There may be less of a din than previous years. However, I am sure the old guard from Hull will put up a good showing.Even if the Beverley Light Brigade fail to ignite the festivities due to this ongoing bemoaning of the changes."The Times They Are A Changing"? Zimmerman obviously never registered in Beverley.

The Monks Walk is closed, the plan being to turn it into a restaurant.
Nellies still does not do music.

The Tiger, Sun & Hodgsons are still going.
Tiger has beginers/easy session on Tuesdays and a 9PM session on Fridays.
Sun has sessions on Saturdays & Sundays 4PM-ish start.

Those campers walking into town from the race course will also find that the Rose & Crown, just outside the bar is closed!

Folk guru? Never heard John sing a song, myself.

Shame about the Monks, and the Rose and Crown. And don't start me on Nellies - although I was back there last week and me and few mates managed to have a bit of a sing-song in the dart room without getting thrown out! Jenny just laughed, not much point in barring me when I live 400 miles away :)
