I'm looking for the words to a song called down by the dockside wall, I can't tell who sang it or anything else about it, all I know is that itwas aritting by an Amercan and I heard it at the Marina in Irivne on Tuesday so if anyone an help me Iwould be really grateful.

According to Shep's biog on his web site, he was initially known as Sheb before the navy thought that Shep was more a appropriate nickname given his ovine surname.

Second line of chorus should be

Dear Sir , as an ex-matelot, I have been priviliged to fall over, sorry, I mean partake in light refreshments at the Petty Officers Mess on several Shep Woolley nights, as a POGI, he was one of the most hated people on board..'Stand still that man!!'- during drill instruction... but as an ex-POGI entertaining , it was impossible to stand still due to the high merriment factor..
Anyway, the 'walk ashore' is generally taken to mean leaving the Navy for the last time... becoming a civilian
'going ashore' is leaving the boat or shore establishment for other dutiful or recreational reasons, but returning.
I 'walked ashore' at Portsmouth Dockyard way back in the mid-eighties, but continue my connection by singing songs by Cyril Tawney ex 'Tiff', like me)and Shep... pus odd sea shanties (not allowed in R.N.)
Last night at the 'Srag End' folk club in Leicestershire , Phil Lunn played/sang this very song, we all joined in the chorus with gusto.

For the record, I did NOT write "not to be confused with Sheb Woolley". I wrote "not to be confused with Sheb Wooley." There is a subtle difference if you read carefully.

Shep Woolley and Sheb Wooley are/were two different people.

One is (or was) American and the other is (or was) British.

One is living and the other is dead.

One wrote DOWN BY THE DOCKYARD WALL (and other songs) and the other wrote I JUST DON'T LOOK GOOD NAKED ANYMORE (and other songs).

They are/were both funny.

I will leave it to you to figure out (and remember) which is which.
