Maud Karpeles is today's subject of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography's "Life Of The Day" e-newsletter. Site link here, though it doesn't last forever.

If it disappears, you can probably find it by clicking around from their home page, or else PM me for the text.

That's wonderful, thanks Bonnie.

What WOULD Miss Karpeles have thought of electric morris (apart from the obvious of it being loud and fast)? She lived long enough to hear Morris On, after all!

It's tempting to say she would have loved it, but who knows..and one wonders what she would have thought of Ashley Hutchings' portrayal od Cecil Sharp

Charlotte (an old hanky waver)

Old hankies aren't compulsory, just because it's a tradition. Our side got two new sets each this year, and we're mostly over 60!

And there is a tiny error - Sharp published the first "Folk Songs from the Appalachians" in 1917 - in fact there were two trips there - the 1932 edition is a vastly expanded and corrected copy of that edition.

Dave (pedantic as ever - but loved correcting Oxford University).

Nice one, Dave! I'm impressed...

Seriously, you ought to email and tell them - they're bound to want to have their information accurate.
