Happy Birthday!

Founder of the American Shakers & of their celibacy notions

"Mother" Ann Lee

was born in Manchester 2/29/1736
(d.Sept 8, 1784)

I will bow and be simple,
I will bow and be free,
I will bow and be humble,
Yea, bow like the willow tree.

Mother Ann Lee was an inspiring religious leader born on a special day. I think the Shakers have been very aware of that fact. They wrote special hymns about her. Did you know that she wrote songs too? Go to this link to read about it:

Great link, Guest-guest (please get yourself a name so you don't risk being deleted - your posts are too good to lose). Here's a clicky:

Why did they whip Elder William and Elder James? Any reason apart from that they were Shakers? I have a book somewhere with Mother Ann's Exultation in it. Their music is lovely - I've been singing Bow & Be Simple since college -
