Subject: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Rick Fielding Date: 14 May 99 - 01:44 AM If this goes up in smoke I'm going to be SO embarrassed, but it's time I stopped being a computer wimp and gave it a shot. If successful, I'd like to thank Peter T,(the long suffering) Joe Offer, and all the others who said "it's not rocket science, dork-head!" Ok, here goes. < A HREF = "http://www.mandoweb.com"> Mandolin Bros. |

Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Helen Date: 14 May 99 - 03:45 AM The very expressive Oz-slang "Onya" seems appropriate here. Helen |

As an experiment; click Rick's link, then click your browsers BACK button Then click Dai's link followed by clicking the BACK button.

Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: MMario Date: 14 May 99 - 09:21 AM Why apologize? "Blue Clickie Thing" is just the kind of phrase that WORKS! One of the trainers in our computer center was always very strict about referring to each item on the screen by it's correct name. However, one day, one of the students could not, even referring to the "cheat sheet" manage to find what she was suppossed to click on, until she was told "the downy pointy arrow". It's been a buzz-phrase around here ever since. MMario |
Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Lowcountry Date: 14 May 99 - 10:43 AM I agree that "the blue clickey thing" is a neat expression. You know what would be cool? You know how some people have mouse pointers that really look like mice? It would be cool if you could make the blue clickey thing look like a cricket. |

Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Ross Date: 14 May 99 - 11:23 AM I always hoped to some day finger pick my banjo, and never expect to achieve it. "Blue Clicky Thingy" is now the number 2 thing on that hallowed list. |

Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Rick Fielding Date: 14 May 99 - 11:39 AM Dai. You think YOU'VE done a bad thing? I think I've broken the "Test thread". It won't work now and I was the last on it! Geez, I knew I was meant to live in a previous century. |
Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Peter T. Date: 14 May 99 - 01:23 PM Congratulations Rick! (2:30 A.M.?) " blue clicky things" is great: only addition (homage to George Harrison) "fiendish clickly blue things!" Yours, Peter T. (with a bad case of the bass runs) |
Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Philippa Date: 14 May 99 - 01:47 PM Helen, People sometimes say "Good on ye" in Ireland; do Ozzies realise they're speaking an abbreviation? |
Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Tucker Date: 14 May 99 - 09:08 PM I've read windows for dummies, parts I,II,III, and I have yet to find a better phrase than "blueclickything". I have made it one word here, my teutonic side sometimes rules. |
Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Alan of Australia Date: 14 May 99 - 09:26 PM G'day, Philippa yep we realize it's an abbreviation, but we'll fight ya for who thought of it first. (We usually add "mate" to the end).
Cheers, |
Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: alison Date: 14 May 99 - 09:45 PM Hi Philippa, My Irish teacher has a theory that quite a few Aussie words came from the Irish language which many brought over with them. eg sean teach (meaning old house) in the genitive becomes seanti, could have become the Aussie word - "shanty" and the plural of bromach (meaning young horse, or colt), being bromaigh could be where they got "brumby" from. and the aussies describe difficult work as "hard yakka".... possibly from the Irish word deacair, (meaning difficulty.) Just a theory slainte alison |
Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Anne Date: 14 May 99 - 10:31 PM Rick, On a recent final exam for my AD in CIS; I used Blue clicky thingy for a definition when asked to define hyperlink. I followed with correct wording. I blanked, however, on ".pdf/Acrobat Reader so I told my Professor that an Acrobat Reader was that member of the flying Wallenda family who could perform acrobatics and read a book at the same time, hence the .pdf for pretty damn funny. Haven't gotten a grade yet... Anne |
Subject: RE: apologies for coining 'blue clicky thing' From: Helen Date: 14 May 99 - 11:36 PM Philippa, Yes, "Onya" is short for "good on you", which means well done, etc. There used to be a company in Newcastle (Oz) which made and sold t-shirts with nifty slogans and cartoons and pix and the name of the company was Onya. I thought that was a really clever phrase because the t-shirt was on-ya. Alison, I think you are right about a lot of Oz phrases. There were other influences too, like dinky, meaning small, which is a Scottish word. I don't know if it relates to Dinkum, though. Helen |
