Subject: REQ:Lyrics and Info on 3 Old Songs
From: Denise

I am looking for the lyrics and any info on 3 very old songs:

"Oh How I Hate To Get Up In the Morning" in the good old summer time. 4 or 5 or 6 o'clock in the good old summer time. But it is nicer to stay in bed. SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I believe Harry Lauder recorded this in the days of the wind up Victrola. My Father used to play it every Sunday morning to get us kids up and ready for church.

"What Do You Do A John? On The Delaware Lakawan‘(sp)" I push a push a push on the Delaware Lakawan’ awan awan. A what d'ya push a John on the Delaware Lakawan‘??? My Mother had sheet music for this and used to play it on the piano and we kids would gather around and sing. She actually had several Uncles that worked on the Delaware Lackawanna (sp). It was a train that ran out of Buffalo, NY.

"In the Little Shirt That Mother Made For Me" something about she powder puffed all around me. My grandmother used to sing this and for the life of me I can't remember the words.

Thanks for any help you can give me. Denise

Lyrics are here:
IT'S NICE TO GET UP IN THE MORNIN'
WHERE DO YOU WORK-A, JOHN?
THE LITTLE SHIRT MY MOTHER MADE FOR ME

Here's some I remember......Tiger

Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning
Oh, how I love to remain in bed.
But the hardest blow of all,
Is to hear the bugler call:
"You gotta get up, you gotta get up,
You gotta get up this morning."

Some day, I'm going to murder the bugler.
Some day, they're going to find him dead.
I'll amputate his reveille, and step upon it heavily
And spend the rest of my day in bed.

I believe "Oh How I Hate to Get Up" is a WWII number written by Irving Berlin -- I have seen period footage of him performing it.

James.

The Harry Lauder number is It's Great to get up in the Morning. I'll look for it---it's in several British Music Hall collections.

I remember the last lines of "Oh, How I Hate to Get Up" as:

"Then I'll get the other pup,
the guy who wakes the bugler up,
and spend... the rest of my life in bed!"

I thought I heard it sung by Eddie Cantor, old "Banjo-Eyes." Wrong?

Sandy

Thank you ?? very much. That is the lyrics to "The Little Shirt That Mother Made for Me." I didn't know Marty Robbins had recorded it. And had forgotten it was in a song book we had of Bradley Kincaid. Denise

Dick, You are right the words I am looking for is to "It's Great to get up in the Morning." Would really appreciate it if you could find them for me. Thank you to Tiger, Jo, and Sandy. I mislead you with the wrong title. The lyrics you gave me are from a wonderful song we sang during WWII. Thank you! Denise

Cantor and Berlin had similar physiques, but it was Berlin, in uniform, no less, who performed Oh How I Hate to Get Up In the Morning on film.

Teru--thanks for the link to "It's Nice to Get Up in the Morning" That is the song and words I was looking for.

Now can anybody come up with the words to "Where Do You Work A John?" This song is an old *Gandy Dancers* melody. I know it was on sheet music around or before 1929. The sheet music cover had a picture of at least 1 man of Italian descent. It was about the Delaware Lackawanna RR.
