Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 11 Mar 08 - 05:21 PM I seem to remember a young lady called Helen running things about that time, am I correct? Is she still in the folk club scene? Hoot |

Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 12 Mar 08 - 02:27 AM was it really 6 years ago that George wrote "As long as someone sings a song?" happy birfday & many more songs (& tunes)! sandra |

Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: GUEST,Suffolk Miracle Date: 12 Mar 08 - 08:57 AM I first went there in 1971 with a charabanc trip from the Oxford University Folk Club at the behest of our president Kitty Green, who was a regular at the Herga. Don't tell me that's Herga Kitty! |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: Herga Kitty Date: 12 Mar 08 - 03:35 PM Suffolk Miracle - of course it's the same Kitty! Kitty (Vernon, formerly Green, who was President of Heritage in Trinity term 1971...) |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: GUEST,Suffolk Miracle Date: 13 Mar 08 - 05:34 AM To Herga Kitty Derek Brinkley. Don't feel remotely guilty if you can't place me, but the best I can remember to help you is your coming into the Club one night the worse for wear and saying that you'd had four Bloody Maries the night before and you weren't going to make that mistake again: I immediately sang 'Last night she had four Bloody Maries/Tonight she'll have but three.' It (sadly) remains the joke I am proudest of! |

Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: GUEST,David Jones, Guest Date: 13 Mar 08 - 03:39 PM 45 years! Great achievement and a brilliant club. Will miss March 17th, but hope to come by the "almost new" club location when next over. maybe early May. David Jones |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: Herga Kitty Date: 13 Mar 08 - 03:46 PM Suffolk Miracle - are you the Derek who wore shades? By the way, Martin from Heritage came to Herga a few times in the last year. David Jones - it would be wonderful to see / hear you again if you're this side of the pond. We lose 2 Mondays to Bank Holidays in May, of course - but we have Pete Wood (of the Keelers, and once upon a time of the Fighting Cocks, Kingston) guesting on 19 May. Kitty |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: GUEST,Suffolk Miracle Date: 14 Mar 08 - 04:40 AM Kitty: Some men might be disappointed that that is the only footstep they have left on the sands of time - but yes, I wore shades! |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: Herga Kitty Date: 14 Mar 08 - 03:47 PM This is turning into a thread hijack, but I've realised that my Presidency of Heritage was 1972, not 1971. See this thread about the Heritage reunion at Sidmouth in 2003. Anyway, Heritage was responsible for bringing George Papavgeris and Nessie together (the term after I graduated - it took until the 21st century for me to meet them!) - but they will, unfortunately, miss the Herga 45th birthday on account of being in Oz. I wonder if we could arrange a phone link. Johnny Collins had to pre-record his song for the 40th birthday, because he was touring in the US when we held the party.... Kitty |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: Herga Kitty Date: 16 Mar 08 - 07:37 AM Refresh - we're partying tomorrow! Kitty |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 16 Mar 08 - 07:50 AM Having been associated with the club for a bit over half that time I wish I could be there for the birthday, but I've other things to do. Maybe I can get to the 50th! Have a good night. Mick |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: GUEST,Bill S from Perth Date: 16 Mar 08 - 09:03 AM Happy birthday from me, I started going just in time for the 10th, Royal Oak was the first club I ever sang at and nobody has mentioned the Morris which I joined about that time, will there be wheelchair access for the original side? I'm still dancing, just returned from a morris tour of the five breweries of Margaret River. Sorry I can't be there, more notice required for the 50th Wassail Bill |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: breezy Date: 16 Mar 08 - 10:09 AM It'll be in 5 years time Bill, is that enough notice.!? Hope to make it tomorrow £2 great to see all the Hergites at the ref's 60th Last night, great song by Sparky |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: Herga Kitty Date: 16 Mar 08 - 12:33 PM Bill - the 45th anniversary snuck up on us... we suddenly realised that 3 March was the 5th anniversary of the 40th birthday party! Here is the history of the club as remembered by John Heydon for the 40th birthday. Not remembered entirely accurately though - I think it was 1967 when I first went to the club, and I didn't go off to university until 1970. Jan McKay and I sang as a duo while we were studying for A-levels. Kitty |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: Singing Referee Date: 17 Mar 08 - 11:51 AM Not long now. That doesn't sound right. 45 years is a long time! Thanks to all the Hergies who came to my 60th on Saturday. Party time again! |
Subject: RE: HERGA at 45 From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 17 Mar 08 - 12:37 PM I have always held the Herga club in the highest esteem, and have happy memories of great nights of song there. Congratulations to the club and all it's people. Happy Birthday, and Many Happy Returns. |
